| Axle mounted body
So I'm sitting at the workbench trying to work out a body mount that won't a) stick out the sides and get hung up on the rocks b) stick up out the top and wreck my CG (yeah, i know they're light, but every little bit counts) c) let me sit the body a little lower so I don't have to chop the fenders off Then, of course, I realize the new chassis doesn't really have anyplace to put a front body mount (the new plans have fixed that little boo-boo) but C is the one that really gets me thinking. I want a body with fenders, damn it. So I ended up with this: Put a single body mount on the upper link mount. the body moves some with the front axle but still allows it to pivot. It also puts some of the weight of the body directly on the axle, for what that's worth. |

not as much as you'd think. there's only a single mount, so the body pivots a little bit, but it's still held rigid by the other two mounts on the chassis.

but.........if the body is mounted to the axles and you say "the body pivots a little but still held rigid by the other two" won't the rigidness of the other 2 body mounts keep the truck from proper articulation? It sounds like it to me... my .02 _Jason |

perhaps i should have made it a little clearer: only the front of the body is mounted to the axle. the rear is still mounted to the chassis. |

^^^still the rigidness of the body might keep the truck from artculating properly...

I recall grover mounting his body to the axles of one of his many different chassis... ... it looked neat... |

What happens when the front axle articulates, it would rip the body. The part of the body that is mounted to the chassis doesn't move but the axle moves up and down, plus rotates around a center point. Sounds like to much movement to me. But hay, if it works, you're a genius |

The combination of vert and twist. One by itself might not be so bad, but together. Plus, looking at the pic, wouldn't that be shifting weight to the low/wrong of the axle. I really don't know how it will work, just thinking out loud.

goat, i was thinking the same thing. on my current chassis, my body post sit relatively close to each other. i was thinking of mounting a single to both axles or just mounting it to the rear axle. and mounting it, just place the lower one to rest on the body on while the top clip will be mounting to the highest hole to let the body move up and down, if needed.

what is "low/wrong of the axle"? Weight low is good. Great idea Microgoat, post some flex shots so these guys can see it works. | |

Low/wrong side of the axle.....lets say you are going from a level plain to a 30 degree slope from left to right. The first tire to push up onto this surface is going to be the left front tire, drivers side from behind. As that tire is forced to articulate, the axle/body would tip to the right, the down hill side. Now, instead of the chassis holding the body centered on the chassis, that weight (the body) is now being pushed to the right. The weight is now more to the down hill side, the more weight on that side the more likely you are to role. Wow, that doesn't even make sence to me I am way to beat to be typing. I will take some pics of what I mean and post them in the morning. |

^^^ Yeah, and with the body in the front twisting to the downward side of the hill. With the two back mounts rigid to the frame, you are actually going to be pulling the rear of the body and the rear of the frame up on the high side and downward toward the downward side of the hill. Plus, you'll probably rip the shiznit out of that body too. If it works great. I'm just typing what I see in my head.

okay, here's a couple more pics. the first pic shows how low you can mount the body this way. see, it's still got fenders, and doesn't sit a mile in the air! this is a recycled body, a new one could have been cut a lot less aggressively, i could have saved the side-marker lights! the second (flex) shot shows that the body moves a little but not a whole lot. the front post has a little space in its location between the pin and the boss (about 1/4 inch) so the body can float a little bit and won't get torn.
