Default 2.2 Beadlaocks, REAL ones! Cheap too!!!!

Well... after todays little run with the rest of the ORCRC TLT's/2.2 sized rigs I saw that my Swamp Dawgs just can't keep up. So I had to go out and get some Mashers. Next was picking out a wheel to go with the new tires.... I could have picked the same old 'Pede rims or some other HPI style ones but why? Why stay in the "norm"? So, while walking around the hobby shop I noticed some wheels that have been in the RC world since the '80s.....

AE makes a CHEAP beadlock wheel. For $7 a pair I couldn't say no.....

With just a tiny bit of trimming they are a bolt-on deal to the TLT axle. End of searching for those that have to have beadlocks!

Do they clamp the tire by tightening the wheel nut? I don't see any screws like the maxx beadlocks.

Do you run foams in your Mashers?

Do you see the 4 screws? Those are what hold it all together. It's a 3 piece design, like most "vintage" AE wheels. I'll pull one appart to show how they work.....(give me a few minutes)

Only issue I've noticed so far is that a different style nut is needed rather than the stock TLT one. I have some that are slightly different that should work better.

No foams. Currently this combo(AE beadlocks and Mashers) it's an air tight fit. You can squeeze the tires as hard as you can and no air leaks out. I need to modifiy the rims slightly to allow air to escape.

Here are some more pictures of the wheels .....

Here you see how the wheel is made up of the three parts, all held together by 4 screws.

Here you can kind of make out the center insert already installed into the tire, then it's just a matter of sticking the two halves together and screw them tight.

Heard from who? So far I have yet to see them slip and I got them wedged really good after in install, thought I was going to rip the tire in two and the rims held them tight...... I can always add more holding power by adding more screws.

...But for $14 for the four of them it's not a big purchase and it was a risk I wanted to take.

sweet tip toyo
I used to use those in the old days racing rc10s so you know they will hold up
never even crossed my mind to use them in crawling, kinda makes ya wonder what else is out there waiting to be descovered.
(ya know that crap sitting on the lhs shelves, dusty, torn packages and all)

That's how I found Maxx tires for the mini-t, VMG, and all the other mini trucks. Discontinued traxxas CAT tires.

That's a pretty sweet find toyo. They are a bit bland, there's gotta be a way to spruce up the look of them... How is the offset?

Wow, that is a blast from the past. You won't have slipping issues if you clean both the tire beads and the rims with rubbing alcohol before installation. Then they'll stick much better. I'll have to dig out an old set from the closet and try them on my tlt.

Better then rubbing alcohol, rub some simple green on the bead of the tire... That thing will never slip.

Arent the AE wheels a 1/4" hex, and Tamiya a 12mm hex? How did you trim the opening to fit and still remain nice and squared?

EDIT: Tower says they fit 1/4" axle, I am guessing that is the opening, so let me rephrase - how big is the hex on the wheel - or does it not have the hex, but just the X slot for the axle pin?

There is no hex on the old school AE wheels. It uses the traditional AE mounting method, a cross pin.

If you look closely at the images I posted you can kind of see the cross pin area:

Now.... in order to run these on your TLT I have found that doing the Blackfoot wide axle swap would be a great idea. The offset on the AE wheels puts them real close to the hub area and DOES rub. You can shave off some plastic on the wheel to relieve the rubbin' problem but then the cross pins don't hold the wheels as well.

So, I'd say that in order to run the AE beadlocks on your TLT you will need to do the Blackfoot wide axle modification!

i remember these 3 piece wheels. they came with my RC10GT that i got back in 96. Suprised more companies didn't use this kind of tire attachment. I hate gluing tires on and these allowed for you to change tires without buying more rims.

I was actually looking to run those wheels on my new/used Pajero that is being shipped this week. I am not sure what mods I would need to do to fit those yet, but will have to do some figuring once I get the truck.
