Default Drilling tmaxx yokes sucks!

Well I managed to destroy two of the four tmaxx yokes I just bought. I was going to open them up enough to slide over the stock drive cups then drill/tap them for screws. Turns out new bits grab way to hard on soft plastic. The 1st one grabbed on the bit and spun itself out of round. Theres no way I can use it because at anything above 5 rpm it'd wobble the whole truck to death. The second one came out better but still not on center. There has to be a better way to drill these stupid things!

I even broke three of my new bits trying to drill the holes in the outdrives on the diff so I could fasten the yokes to them. I've pretty much given up and am waiting to save the cash for the vertigo setup.

I feal kinda bad because I see it as cheating (buying the parts vs/making them). I have no idea how to drill these things on center! :?

Yeah had that. It doesn't matter. If you clamp the yokes down tight enough so they wont spin they get distorted. if you use a drill press you have to have them perfectly lined up with the bit as it slides down. There really isn't a way to get them 100% straight.

I'm confused.... What are you trying to drill out? My stampedes slid right over... As for the pinion shaft output (from the axle) I used some titanium bits and had no problem... With a handheld drill and no center punch.... I don't know what you're doing wrong on that one.

On my drill press platform there is a hole through the middle where the drill bit goes when you drill through something. I stick the yoke in that hole and usually find somethign to fit around the yoke to center it in that hole. That way you drill press is centered and your yoke is centered and you just hold the yoke and the shaft from below the press platform to keep in from spinning.

Most of mine I haven't had much of a problem with doing by hand. I usually hold on my leg and just drill it. One of mine is a little off centered, but not enough to make a big problem. I am running a Lathe motor and gear reductions so my truck doesn't fly down the road, but it spins enough to be a problem if it was MAJORLY off centered. I would say to you best to center it on drill press if you are not able to get it done right by hand.

One of mine caught the soft plastic and started to give me problems but it turned out ok. I found if you use high RPMs with the drill press and drill into the plastic REALLY slow with hardly any pressure and it will drill out without grabbing the plastic.

Anyway, Good Luck the next time you try....
I'm with you on the part where you said it feels like you are cheating if you don't build it yourself.

PWT: I'm using tmaxx yokes and sliders, not the 'pede ones. They where cheap what can I say

I was holding them with a pair of vise grips set to the tightest setting i could go without distorting them. I wanted to slide them over the stock dog-bone drive cups so I could use the stock drive cups set screws and not drill the pinion gear shafts.

I should be ordering my vertigo setup tonight. I feal like such a weiner

Default hmm thought i replied but idont see it

why drill out the sliders to take the old cups???

drill out the output shafts of the axle and tranny then shave down the centering pin for the sliders and thread through the output shafts.

This is how i did it and it works just fine. No slipping and was easy!

The TLT axle pinion shaft is smaller than the Revo Yoke so it is floppy even if you drill a set screw hole through the pinion shaft.

It might be better though if you could make a sleeve to fit over the pinion shaft and then drill through the pinion shaft and put the Revo sliders on. I don't know. I have tried a few different ways of attaching the sliders to the TLT pinion shafts but i have only gotten the drilled yoke option to work and be tight on the shaft. The other way was very loose.

Yea, i have a couple fo those i think the shaft hole in the Maxx sliders are smaller. I am building one now but haven't fitted the shafts up yet.

You need a reamer, forget the drill bit.

http://www.dormertools.com/
http://www.unionbutterfield.com/

5mm reamer, either a hand reamer or machine reamer (Use in a drill)

A drill press will just mess you up..
