Default How I locked out rear steer

Take one of those nice plastic bearing containers... plastic is so easy to work with.

Hack a piece off and grind two curves into it to fit over curves on inside of knuckle.

Mount on axle.

Make sure it is snug so there is no slop at all.

I can paint it but for now it will stay clear. Next I am going to cut off the arms on my knuckles since they aren't needed.

And yes, it's damn sturdy!

The tubes themselves are made of a reasonably thick material and while some house crawling and deliberate smacks of it show signs of it holding up, until this is rock tested I can't swear to anything.

The plastic still flexes a bit on hard raps which I consider a good thing. Better that then snapping something.

Good job.

See if you can get the diameter of it. I was thinking of trying something with PVC or even Aluminum tube.

Ok word from Kevin... Mr. Engineering himself.

There is a physics problem here. Torque is force times distance. If we apply a 10 pound force to the outside of a 2.2 tire and: Stop it from turning with a tie rod attached to the knuckle at about 1/2 the distance in from center. The force exerted on that tie rod might be around 20 pounds. Stop it from turning with a plastic bushing 1/8 the distance from center to the force. The force exerted on that plastic bushing will be around 80 pounds!

Whatever you make them out of, that setup will create allot of force in the components in that area and most definitely will increase the failure rate of those components (knuckles, axle c's, axle tube, etc).

So... as I originally said, hopefully the amount of flex the plastic offers is enough to stop other parts from snapping.

Really?

I have been working on getting them machined, but being as small as they are, is a PITA.. I personally do not have the mill and crap to try it, so have to send them off to a friend.. Since mine cover the whole inside to help with the forces applied, there is more shaving than just for the inside of the knuckles, which makes them a pain Right now I have just been doing them by hand, test fit, more shaving, test fit etc.

Thats an awsome idea. I really like it in 1/4" derlin. It looks like it would be really easy to make a set for myself.

Be careful with the delrin... if you use something that doesn't flex, you're likely to break something else.

Wouldn't you think with the Delrin, it would make a tighter fit and fill in more surface area to dispense more of the force. Plus with the Delrin, it looks to be more of one solid piece. I guess if anything get a pair of Fat-rock axel C-s and some aluminum knuckles and see how it goes from there.
