| New kind of DIG
I was looking through the latest copy of four wheeler mag and I noticed a rig in there that had actual disc brakes on the driveline itself. I had seen this before on actual monster trucks. But seeing that, the squeaky wheels in me head started turnin. Having a nitro 1/8th scale buggy helped the idea out too. Those of you that are framiliar with nitro know that most nitro rigs use a disc brake system for braking/stopping the vehicle. Well I figured that if a small disc brake could stop an 1/8th scale nitro doing 50+ mph, it could lock a driveline on a tlt. So I went down into my basement/machine shop and went to work. The stupid thing is, I forgot to take pics along the way as I was doing the build, DOH!!! I used a piece of 1/4" square stock aluminum, 2 traxxas ball ends, 2 pieces of 4-40 all thread, 2 small aluminum spacers, part of the steering system from the stock tlt kit, traxxas stampede drivelines, team associated fiber disc, and team associated brake shoes. The way things are set up everything works in one fluid motion. I am using a hitec 645MG servo to actuate everything. The wire disengages the driveline and presses the cam into the brake shoe all at the same time. I used this setup at the WARCRC/EWRCRC comp last saturday and it work great!! I competely locks the driveline. Sorry for the terrible pics, I will be taking batter ones tommorrow. Enough of me blabbing, here are the pics: Well there it is, only concern I have is that the fiber disc might get caught on a rock. Let me kno wwhat you all think. interesting... I was looking at a nitro the other day and wondering if a setup like that would work.

Instead of having it right in front of the diff on the axle, I am thinking about moving it up to the output on the tranny to get it out of the way.

| Oh man, it has been a long day, you are absolutely right. I can't do it that way. They also have brake discs that are metal and the shoes have fiber on them. I wonder if that would help. I would still have a snag point though. I guess I will have to start thinking about a skid plate.

The axle you saw in the Mag was a Rockwell.....Nice set up. I have a buddy that has been working on a set up like that. But his is attached to the tranny's out puts.

I saw this setup at the last comp and it looks/works good just a couple things that I thought may be problems is the disck hanging low and the thin wire used to slide the disco. The wire is a easy fix just use a bigger guage wire and as far as the disck......I think if you clocked the rear axle up some it wouldn't be as big of issue and maybee make a lexan skid on the lower links that protects the whole drive line assembly. Just my $.02 and I know how Justin likes to hear feedback on his ideas and how they can be improved. |

Why not put the axle brake on the tranny side rather than on the axle? This way, I think it would be out of the way depending on how your rig is setup.

| Cause the trany is locked up to put equal power to front and rear, can't lock the rear output with it like that.

Check out a mountain bike hydraulic disc-brakes setup. They can be engaged by pulling on a lever...
