A new Project. Rock Rider Chassis w/Dig and Portals Well.....Jumped into another project. I have like 4 sets of TLT axles laying around, so here goes a set. Parts List RC4WD Rock Rider Chassis RC4WD R2Dig tranny RC4WD Portal Axles RC4WD Beadlock Wheels RC4WD punisher shafts Fat Rock Axle C's Axial Sticky Lizards Integy 55 turn Lathe Motor Moped v16r ESC Two Tower pro 945 servo's Traxxas Shocks PaulEZK Axle Truss Mount Custom Delrin 4 link and steering links Custom lockouts for the rear with the Portals I am impressed with the quality of the welds and bends on the chassis. The Powder Coat is also very nice and evenly coated. The chassis leaves a lot of spots for link and shock mounts. I plan to do a sprung set-up, but I may give droop a try as well. http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q...16-07_3990.jpg http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q...16-07_3991.jpg http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q...16-07_3992.jpg I'll post more pics later. |
This is gonna be good! Can't wait to see how it looks when its done. |
So this is the new chassis. Looks nice. Can't wait to see the first scratch happen. |
Watching this one...go for it Tom... |
I work fast, so here are a few more photo's. I have the axles mounted up. The Portals came off my Clod project. I modified them a little, that is why they are ground a little on the tops. http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q...16-07_3993.jpg Mounting up the R2D tranny. http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q...16-07_4001.jpg More pics tonight! Got the links all ready!;-) |
did you have to make a spacer for the R2d or did one come with the chassis? Looks good. I still have yet to see what this tuber looks like with panels- should be pretty sweet."thumbsup""thumbsup" |

I hope they keep the same type design. You can mount the tranny to the left or right side the way it is right now. |
Here it is with the lower links and the shocks mounted up. http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q...27-07_4209.jpg http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q...27-07_4210.jpg There are plenty of spots to mount the links and shocks. This will be very interesting. Will give me a bunch of choices for set-up. |
nice... i like the portal setup... |
Here it is with the complete 4 link set-up. http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q...27-07_4211.jpg Rear end http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q...27-07_4212.jpg Front End http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q...27-07_4213.jpg http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q...27-07_4214.jpg Flex poser shot http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q...27-07_4215.jpg http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q...27-07_4216.jpg Got it out on the rocks. Ill load the pics and post later. |
very nice thats some mucho $$$ right thurrr |
Here are a few shots. Rear Axle truss. I really like this. It is really cool. http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q...27-07_4254.jpg I added a delrin lockout for the rear. It works really good, and allowed me to remove the arms off the Portals. http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q...27-07_4255.jpg http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q...27-07_4256.jpg Got the Dig hooked up. http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q...27-07_4257.jpg Close up of the front steering links. I used 1/4 delrin for all the lniks on this truck. The 1/4 is pretty solid. It allows a little bit of flex, but is still firm. http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q...27-07_4259.jpg Here is the Electronics installed. The Spektrum Reciever is mounted on the side of the chassis beside the tranny. http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q...27-07_4260.jpg Battery pack sits nicely under the chassis and on top of the links. http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q...27-07_4261.jpg |
who makes that axle truss? |

That's looking real nice!! Where'd you find the metal servo posts up front (in pic below)? Do you have a part # and manufacturer for those? I'm looking for a pair for my TLT axles ;-) Also, how do you like the delrin front steering links? Have you beat on 'em a bit? I'm wondering how they hold up in the rocks. http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q...27-07_4209.jpg |
I must admit I didn't care too much for tubers at first. But they are growing on me quickly. Nice build!!!!!!!!! |

http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXGHA2&P=7 I tried the truck on the rocks. The links worked great.;-) |
All that, and a Moped esc? |

Brandon gets the next Brushless set-up for his AX-10. |
Got it on the rocks. Still needs some tweaking. New shocks and lighter fluid. http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q...-07_4267-1.jpg http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q...27-07_4274.jpg http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q...27-07_4273.jpg http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q...27-07_4268.jpg The portals stood up to the little testing I did. With the Portals on the truck and the weight of the chassis it is a bit top heavy. The Dig tranny worked without any problem. |
Very Nice "thumbsup" |

Nice nice Tom, looks great "thumbsup" Wouldnt mind trying out the Portals... |
Nice 1! "thumbsup" But where do I get these portals? They are looking very interesting... 8) Manuel |
Anyone tried flipping the portals to lower the axle? I know that may seem silly and a major loss of axle clearance, but most of the crawlers are headed towards low cg belly draggers anyway. If I had some extra cash i would get the portals and test it myself but....I don't. So there is my suggestion for trying something new! Or maybe flip the portals and add some larger hybrid tires. This would offset for a larger tire without raising the axle as much as a normal big tired rig, and you would have the extra gear reduction. Shes looks beautiful though, awsome work! I love the truss. Lex The portals are from RC4WD |

I made a change. I went with a droop set-up. Took the springs off. It seems to be a little better. Going to test tomorrow on the rocks. With the Portal's it should have the clearance I need and lower the COG.:) |
