Robbobs bored and building a shafty Well seeing that my Dominator chassis XR is working so well for me and practice seems to be 2 packs a week I figured I might as well start a sporty build. Not much for being 'ordinary' and remembering how much luck I had with my LCC once I got the right setup and learned how to drive I decided lets do it this way. So having a girlfriend who understands a man playing with toys is acceptable she tells me about a hobby shop closing up. Ya hey lets go see if they got anything good. So I ask the guy, how much for the Nightcrawler in the corner. He says Ill give it to you for my cost. Hmmm knowing more then he realizes I say well how much did you pay? He says 238$ and its yours ..... So I think thats about 138$ more then its worth but I can use the RTR electronics in the Grasshopper 2 I was getting my daughter so SOLD! On the way home I got ideas just crushing my tiny cranium and cant wait to get on the CAD and start taking measurements. Out of the box it comes ....... Girlfriend says 'you gonna drive it?' ....... Nope Im taking it apart to build it my way. She just looks at me and says good luck lol. Still love these tires ...... http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/b...pshokhgmvi.jpg And a little RTR shot http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/b...psmbrrjoqs.jpg So seeing that sporty rigs these days are apparently capable of running pro course the first thing I tackled was the front end. STEERING! Stock just wasnt gonna cut it for me. Seeing rigs with the old TAG kits on them I went hunting. Apparently they are as extinct as the truck itself almost is but I did run across the next best idea. i found Youngbloods (http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/team-...sportster.html) outrunner sportster build and knew what to do. AR nubs and some fabrication. The part that really drives me about this hobby, make your own parts. Why make them when you can just buy them like everyone else? Well as someone once said ...... 'because we can' ........ and thats what started it. So stock axle and XR donor http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/b...psi1hiqirn.jpg Stock axle and AR axle taped where you have to cut it http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/b...psaevqssah.jpg Cut - Drilled - Losi ears sanded off - Nice and snug http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/b...psq1sbu32q.jpg http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/b...psqqtr03mn.jpg Now for the axles ...... with my copy from Egressor's XR build. So I take some brass pieces and axles from the oldschool clodbuster. Mix that with a drilled out stock and HD locker and boom I got something going. http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/b...psofo8mlit.jpg http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/b...psw7ppmazq.jpg http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/b...psezu2gyki.jpg http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/b...psh2b82ams.jpg So then I take the clod axles and dill them out ..... slid a set of XR fronts in and get them welded http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/b...ps17qytuw7.jpg BOOM ...... front axle complete and I got steering http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/b...ps2iz6vo6g.jpg |
Re: Robbobs bored and building a shafty Now lets do this transmission and narrow it up some ...... So I rolled the stock idler up some which lets me bring the motor in closer to the drive gear. While Im at it lets make a real brace for that idler so 'maybe' we wont blow it out. http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/b...psiiw12oha.jpg http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/b...psjpvub6dr.jpg http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/b...pspunwqkcm.jpg http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/b...psla5pdehb.jpg And well thats about all I got so far ........ Skid material coming next week puts me at a stall for now but whos in a rush really. Slow but gonna be fun to build up this dinosaur "thumbsup" |
Re: Robbobs bored and building a shafty Hellava start, I knew you'd build a sporty soon!"thumbsup" |
Re: Robbobs bored and building a shafty Very nice sir !! "thumbsup" As a die hard Losi fan,-I most certainly will follow this build closely 8) Very clean and clever front axle! And really love that compact transmission ! (hint-hint) ;-);-) "thumbsup" |
Re: Robbobs bored and building a shafty Really nice work, How will you keep the brass inserts from spinning inside the worm gear ? |
Re: Robbobs bored and building a shafty Quote:
Loctite 609 and a really really tight press fit. ;-) |
Re: Robbobs bored and building a shafty Nice job on the XR10 mod!!! Are we going to have a new source for some Losi parts? |

Re: Robbobs bored and building a shafty Quote:
HD's are faster,- 21t vs stock 25t ;-) Losi part # is LOSA3187,-can be found on Ebay for example "thumbsup" |
Re: Robbobs bored and building a shafty Losi HD Worm Gear Set (LOSA3187) | RC Car & Truck Parts | RC Planet http://www.horizonhobby.com/hd-worm-...--ncr-losa3187 Etc... they're all over if you look. |

Re: Robbobs bored and building a shafty Quote:
So after remembering that .... I would have to say very close to the Mobil stuff like Heido said, maybe a little thicker. Remember trying some of this stuff before with all the heat/grease talks. Quote:

Been there..... !! :lmao::mrgreen: |
Re: Robbobs bored and building a shafty Ok so everything is hinging on how my skid idea turns out ....... think im on the right path so far. In between some orders and inventory runs I managed to get a skid cut and pocket milled. Its actually smooooth to the feel even seeing the tool marks. Flat tip 2 flute end mill with a .02 step over ... cosmetically I think a .05 step over will get rid of the lines better but good for mine and trials. http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/b...psfs0tqswe.jpg http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/b...pscahq8bdt.jpg And some CF (of course) but for what? http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/b...ps5bc4hxcb.jpg The idea is to pinch the lower link pins inplace and not have to use the Losi pieces or change the triangulation from Losi. http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/b...pscmqllckj.jpg http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/b...ps5fubxlpz.jpg And how do we hold the tranny in place? With some delrin mounts of course. http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/b...psprvijyk6.jpg http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/b...psh53fngie.jpg And mocked together ........ http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/b...pswdwht9je.jpg http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/b...psgvfpwasf.jpg http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/b...psmdu8ij05.jpg And well thats it for now ........ next stage is getting the other ideas out of my head and into this. But that has to wait for after Krazed parts. :ror: |
Re: Robbobs bored and building a shafty Dayum Bobbor!!! That's some Krazy sexiness right there! That CF really pops w/that red labeled HH Crawlmaster Pro in there... ;) mmmmm mmmmm |
Re: Robbobs bored and building a shafty Awesome !! Very nice parts !! "thumbsup""thumbsup" |
Re: Robbobs bored and building a shafty Got a little work done on the fun box and some stuff done to the Losi ...... Little shot showing the lower links inplace http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/b...psari1sbkb.jpg And some of the chassis setup ..... Ill be honest I dont liek the front shock angle so thats gonna be worked on before I commit to any CF material. The rear shocks are on a similar Losi style adjustment. Two screws hold each arm and allow you to rotate them up or down about .125 to alter belly and shock angles. http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/b...psszxijhaq.jpg http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/b...psrotrvvgx.jpg http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/b...pslzsspaoy.jpg Thats about it for now but I do have my front axle plate made and was wondering about interest in it. I can say it probably wont fit well between a stock axle but works with the Youngblood or Teng mod. http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/b...psfkfhvkzf.jpg http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/b...psqbs0jrth.jpg http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/b...psp9gqv5dh.jpg http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/b...psgrjbt3gh.jpg http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/b...psugcirhnd.jpg If theres enough interest I could see us bringing these to production ..... whats everyones opinion? |
Re: Robbobs bored and building a shafty Brilliant...I would buy one. Sent from my LG-D415 using Tapatalk |
Re: Robbobs bored and building a shafty Ok, so I let me crawl out of my hole and ask a couple questions, as I am not in the now on losi goodies Do the worm drive trucks handle an over driven front as awell as a R&P truck does? I seem to see people welding shafts together more often these days. Does it seem to hold? I am a fabricator for a living now, and can tig some shafts together. Why did you chose clod inners? Cool factor? Will you cut me those trans parts? I recently got an itch to fart around with a losi, and was thinking of offering XR conversion junk. But Im not sure how popular they would be, or if anyone even does losi stuff these days |
Re: Robbobs bored and building a shafty Quote:
I drove my old LCC for a long time with the HD gears in the front. I cant say I ever felt it wasn't enough but that was also in a pro class with digs. Never felt any bind or like one axle was dragging or pushing another. I chose the clod pieces for two reasons. I felt that if I can get all that steering into the truck then it would help the axles telescope a little and take some stress off the joints. Also using the splines I had more of a hold on the axles in the locker and less of a chance of rounding off the stock square ends over time. Who knows though I could wind up spinning an insert with the luck I have at times. Also it was easier for me to drill the clod stub out and slide the Xr axle in then to try and butt the two pieces together to weld them. PM me on the tranny parts ..... |
Re: Robbobs bored and building a shafty I'd buy some xr conversion parts :) Sent from my HTC One M9 using Tapatalk |
Re: Robbobs bored and building a shafty Ok so not much of a build thread compared to some of my past ones, just dont seem to have the minutes left in a day to update everything. My fault but I do have a runner. So after some talks with Jens on the front axle plate I made some changes to it. Noticing I couldnt get all my steering and the battery was stuffed in the wheel I brought the servo and battery in a bit more. So we went from this .... notice the top screws and servo location .... http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/b...psugcirhnd.jpg To this and counter sunk screws http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/b...psj0u5qyqu.jpg There is a v3 coming though that moves the servo back and over to center a bit more plus the battery over as well. This should clear me up for max throw. So heres my infamous paint job that brought me luck with my old pro rig .... and some shots of the under carriage. http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/b...ps8sngndsl.jpg http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/b...psf7ab8kah.jpg http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/b...pspsnwlj9i.jpg My rendition of BTA for the Losi http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/b...ps4uny39cu.jpg And the rear side http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/b...psn5t6ymw0.jpg Plus a shot of our 1100's weight hangers giving us over 70grams per side available. http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/b...ps0mwspv4y.jpg C-Class with Purpmart Voodoos and Crawler Innovation foams http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/b...psttvms3v2.jpg And here she is tipping the scale RTR with a 4S on her ....... This thing needs a diet still ;-) http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/b...psnsgcwpne.jpg http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/b...psr7xcahtz.jpg More to come later on ...... got some skinny things coming in for a change. Got a couple packs of practice and was pretty impressed with its first outing. Some more test n tune for her and Im sure shes gonna be a front runner with a real driver behind her . |
Re: Robbobs bored and building a shafty how long did your axles end up after you welded them. i am scheming my next build and i really like the direction you went with on the axle. great looking build , i hope to have a sporty built by spring. |
