I think that there are more fans of the Hyrax than the Flatiron... or maybe just more people with experience with the Hyrax so I dunno. Although I've never run the Hyrax, I have run the Flatirons on a couple of moderately heavy trx4's... long and short wheelbase.

I personally like the Flatirons quite a bit but as mentioned by MaX-D, the terrain and conditions have a lot to do with the performance. In anything wet or muddy or excessively dusty, the performance suffers quite a bit ( at least IME). But when they're dry and on clean rock, they perform very well. They're also pretty good as a trail tire on loamy, dry, and hard-pack surfaces.

But again as mentioned... so much has to do with the type of terrain as well as the foams, and the weight of the rig.

For the most part I do a lot of trailing wet rocks a little bit of mud maybe and dirt, Both wet and dry but I'm doing a competition in a week and a 1/2 and it is in an old rock quarry.. So mostly rocks in some loose rocks.

I love my Flat Irons on the rocks, with my 9lb UMG10. It was keeping up pretty damn well with a lighter comp UMG10 on trenchers (closer to hyrax) this weekend. I think for competition, on a lighter truck, you're gonna be better off with hyrax. I think hyrax are ****in' ugly and I don't comp, so they were never an option for me.

I run hyrax on 2 of my rigs. They do great on the dirt n the rocks. Theyre not the best lookin tread, but they get the job done. Ive wanted to try the flat irons, just havent bit the bullet on buyin them.

Heres the hyrax on my vstrx4 (blue/white) n my gspeed v3 (blue n grey)

I have run both quite a bit. Seems like the flatirons perform better for me overall. They clean out better as well. They are also slightly taller at 4.76, so be careful if you run a strict comp as they are over the class 2 size of 4.75

I have both. On the Flatiron I cut some of the lugs. I like them even better now.

They are both not really a reference on Rocks..so for the comp I would look for something else.

Hyrax are hard to beat on rocks of various types. They work for me, well enough that I use them on class 1, 2, and 3 comp trucks...with lots of podiums and wins. And I've seen first hand how they compare to other tires especially in competition, but this is under Sorrca rules which does have some tire limitations. There is no one best tire but with proper foam setup Hyrax won't be an excuse for poor performance. Now if you'll be in mud a lot, I think flatiron may be better but it sounds like running in mud would be more of an exception than the rule.

FWIW, I don't use Hyrax for trails much only because all the other tires I test and don't like end up as just 'trail' tires. My Hyrax are saved for comps mostly since all out performance isn't critical for trails.

I like Hyrax, no experience with the other. I do comp on mostly dry rock, maybe a bit of sand. BUT when it is wet:

Hyrax+wet+sand=SUCK
