| Small rectangular steel source
I'm looking for small rectangular steel, 1/4" x 1/8 or 3/16", preferably tube, but solid would do. I can get all the 3/16" and 1/4" square stock (keystock) locally, but they don't have rectangular this small. Any one have a source?

| Quote: Right dimensions, but its only 1½" long, and its tool steel. You'll never bend that stuff and its pretty tough to grind. What I would do is weld together two 1/8" key stock. Lap the two long sides and your done. I wouldn't braze then together if your going to use them for brazing with. I admit it would be a PITA to weld the 1/8 and not have it look like a snake after your done. Although, if you were careful with your heat placement, I am sure it would be fine. | |

Thanks for the ideas guys. Yeah, I need something that is going to be part of the main structural support on a couple of tuber builds I've got in the works, so brass won't do. Brazing the two 1/8 keystock together might work, it's worth a try at least. Another thought that struck my mind is seeing if my laser cutter can cut some 1/4" strips out of 1/8" plate steel. Worth asking at least, they've done a lot of little one-offs for me.

| www.onlinemetals.com my favorite place to get stock in small quantities. They only have solid steel 1018 cold roll in that size. That or possibly Key Stock. Do a search for (0.125" X 0.25") o thier site. The Cold Rolled is here http://www.onlinemetals.com/merchant...=2&top_cat=197 They sell in small quantities, and are quick to ship. It amazes me so few people seem to know about them. Last edited by MystRacing; 09-10-2009 at 11:22 AM. |

I would just have the bars laser cut like you said... I have looked for the same thing in the past with no luck.

Laser cutter is hooking me up. For four feet of 1/4" x 3/16" (was more scale looking for what I need), a grand total of 8 bucks. I can live with that !
