shock cap mod ???

im a search function noob. i looked for a bit but then i decided to start working. now i wanna make sure i get it done right...

so im looking for a "how to" thread for doing the losi shock cap mod.
im gunna make me some grilled cheese and get er done.

Here is a write up from "Krakker"


figured I would post some pics of the shock cap mod here since I didn't find it when I searched.
Really simple to with a drill and vice but I used my lathe since they were the Aluminum big bores.
1st, use a dremel (or lathe) to remove the stock mounting tab as close to the top of the cap as possible then take the shock cap off and drill a hole using a #36 or #35 drill bit. (this will make it so you have to thread the screw through the cap)
2nd, thread the screw through the cap and dab a little lock-tite near the base.
3rd, screw the traxxas or what ever 3mm rod end onto the screw till its tight against the cap. Wah la, you've now gat a smooth rod end on the end of a Losi, or Traxxas shock cap.

pretty simple mod as shown above.

what i do is drill and then tap the hole for the 3mm screw. it helps with the sealing of the hole.

so to seal the cap(newly drilled hole). all u had to do was put lock-tite on it?

i understand the process of "how to" i just was iffy about sealing it the correct way

Yep the Lock-tite will seal the deal haha.. But reall it works i would use Blue.

u can also add a team associated nylon washer on the inside to help seal it.

Thanks for posting that bcrofts, I never thought about posting it here, most of the searches end up in the general section tips and tricks.

Mod is simple if you're using a plastic shock, I just wanted to show it on a big bore. Sealing it can be done with just about anything really. Loc-tite, silicone, cualking. If you use the right drill bit, it pretty much seals it self when you put the screw through it. I just prefer the blue loc-tite since it's handy with my R/C tools.

Remember that doing this mod will make the shock taller though wich might interfere depending on your setup, you might have to limit the shock back a 1/4 or so to even it back out.

True, you will get added length in the shock. Limiting that either internal or external can compensate.
One thing I've found is that using the traxxas big bores or the stock slash front shocks is that I get the right length with the cap mod and they are very light weight. I run stock Slash fronts w/ the cap mod on the rear of my Bully rig and the aluminum big bores up front.
I run the same big bores on my Bastard Fun Buggy but NO cap mod to keep it low (running droop) and they are pretty much vertical. The rears on it are also stock Slash fronts w/ the cap mod.
There is a place for everything, the cap mod should only be done IF you need the flexability or can deal with the added length.

Thank you for sharing and inspiring me to do my axial comp shocks.
Here is my play-by-play.
First I cut the nubs off,then made the tops flush.A file worked well as my hand is too shakey for my dremel,then some sandpaper to finish.


When I got them flush,The pilot hole was already there for me.


Drilled them out with a 3/32 bit.As you can see the inside of the cap was a perfect fit for countersunk screws.Almost like they were made for this mod.



Apply sealant too inside cone area.

Screw ends on caps.

A little sealant oozed out the top but not a big deal.
Done,easy as pie.
