| How do you weld brake line? PICS
Well, I'm going to be starting a project (FINALLY) and I don't know how to weld the bake line metal together. This will be my first real project using any type of tubing. I was also wondering, if you are able to weld them together using solder,:? because this is what I have. I really hope you guys can help me out. Please post your thoughts here. Thanx. you either can use a wire feed welder, TIG welder, arc welder (maybe), or braze it. you might be able to solder it, but i dont think it would be too strong.

Most of the guys here braze the tubing, there's a tech article on the home page under.....(as luck would have it)...."Tech." Some people also use a mig to tack the tubing in place, and then finish it up with brazing. -WRM

| I'm in the process of "drawing up blueprints" for a 1/18 nylint. I plan on making a tubed out rearend, and welding some brake line to run up through the front of the Jeep. I will add tube fenders, and a stinger bumper to finish it off. This will be my first project, so I will need all the tips and comments, I can get! |

I talked to my dad, and said that if you tried to weld it, it would burn right through it. Well I would like to here from Jason In Augusta on his opinion. Since he has been working on SALLY, and all the welding he has to do. Keep sending in your comments. I will try to post pics on my "Blueprints" if you guys can tell me how to post pics. Thanx.

When you solder (and braze), you're bonding the two pieces together with a filler metal through a process known as capillary action. It takes heat to bond the two pieces together, and heat will also separate the two from one another. When you weld two items together, you're actually fusing the material of the two pieces together to form one piece. Apply heat to the welded joint once you're done and you'll just have hot metal... If you try to weld a complete joint made with brake tubing you will burn through. (I know I do! ) That's why I don't try to weld the joints, just hit'm with the MIG (Lincoln Pro-MIG 135 turned down) real quick to tack the two pieces together. This is much easier than playing with magnets, jigs, or whatever to build and if you need to go back and reheat a joint or apply heat to a new joint that's close to an old one, you don't run the risk of the old joint separating. It's strong too. I just built a new driveshaft for another project using the same method. The only difference is I went with several spot welds around the dogbone, ground it down, then brazed the joint. Last edited by JasonInAugusta; 01-23-2006 at 08:45 PM.

I have the 400 dollar Lincoln MIG welder, will that burn through hollow line? And if I want solid tube, what should I use?

Solid is too heavy, but I did it to mess around. I used 3/16 and 3/32 rods on my cheapo welder work fine. So a mig would be even cleaner, maybe even could do thinner. What model Lincoln is it? 100SP? Wire size makes a difference too. I think follow JIA's advice on this stuff, braze it.
