Tire Chains 101!!!! step by step. Picture Heavy!! 11 Attachment(s) Ok I decided to write up on how to make chains for any size tire!!!"thumbsup" Ok first off lets start with the basics. I used Jack Chain #16 zinc plated i bought 20 feet for about $12 Attachment 184350 Ok so the first thing you will need to do is measure the inner diameter of where you would like the chain to wrap around. Once you have the diameter find the circumfrence. i.e. Diameter x Pi = circumfrence. Attachment 184354 those were the measurements i chose to use. So take the circumfrence and measure the jack chain to the circumfrence then round UP to the nearest full link! I took it to 23 links total. Write everything down as you go for reference. you will need the diameter for the next step. Now you need to minus the inner diameter from the outer diameter of the entire wheel. Attachment 184361 Attachment 184353 The length that you have there will be added to the width to get the length of the runs Attachment 184363 Attachment 184360 Note!!! i removed on link from this measurement to 7 links not 8. Attachment 184364 Attachment 184359 In this case make sure that you round to the closest link i rounded up which did not work for me. During this instructional i only used 6 runs but upped them to 8 runs. So total length per wheel was about 3.5 feet not 3 feet. Attachment 184362 next start hooking everything together Attachment 184352 This project takes about 2 hours to complete for four wheels. Here is the final product. I connected the ends of the outside chains like the runs. The inside i connected with zipties. Everything works very well. Attachment 184351 Ok so here are some very helpful tips. Mark the ends of the long chains with marker or something incase you move the chains around too much and loose the ends. Build a rig 4 nails spaced the length of the long chains and short chains so it doesnt get knocked around and keeps the chains from twisting too much. |
Re: Tire Chains 101!!!! step by step. Picture Heavy!! The tires i used were 1.9 prolines so that you can use the exact same measurements. |
Re: Tire Chains 101!!!! step by step. Picture Heavy!! Good info! thanks for sharing"thumbsup" |
Re: Tire Chains 101!!!! step by step. Picture Heavy!! Good info and looks great, the ones I made did well at the Lyons Dam "thumbsup" |

I went to try my chains last night then my rear drive broke the second I got out. |
Re: Tire Chains 101!!!! step by step. Picture Heavy!! Damn! those are cool! Nice write up on this how to, thanks for sharing that. |
Re: Tire Chains 101!!!! step by step. Picture Heavy!! Very cool. Thanks for the writeup. Now I'll have some ideas where to start. |
Re: Tire Chains 101!!!! step by step. Picture Heavy!! Going to be building these before the snow flies so I figured give it a bump for everybody else"thumbsup" |
Re: Tire Chains 101!!!! step by step. Picture Heavy!! foratm, excellent write-up and pictures. Makes it easy to run through."thumbsup""thumbsup" Have you gotten any real use out of the chains? If so, how have they been holding up? Do they help in snow, ice, mud? Do you think they're better than just tires for traction? If anyone else did these, any feedback would be great.8) Honchoforever1, nice bump.;-) |
I have used these chains like crazy and on the snow they work amazing even on ice. A kid lost his sled on the ice and I pushed it back to shore with out any problem. In mud they work like paddles almost and I have yet to break them at all and with the gap they have between the runs they still crawl on the rocks a bit. Re: Tire Chains 101!!!! step by step. Picture Heavy!! I forgot about these, bought a whole box of jack chain too, maybe I'll get around to it this fall. |
Re: Tire Chains 101!!!! step by step. Picture Heavy!! thanks for posting this, i was gonna buy some to have some winter fun with, but this doesnt seem too hard |
Re: Tire Chains 101!!!! step by step. Picture Heavy!! I made a set in a similar manner but for the outer "ring" I used an appropriate size split ring (think like a key chain ring) and for the inner I used a split hinged ring (like a binder has) Outer ring: https://encrypted-tbn2.gstatic.com/i...aHOUihESMYvnYA Inner ring: https://encrypted-tbn2.gstatic.com/i...ye4b8eXOUeBMsg |
Re: Tire Chains 101!!!! step by step. Picture Heavy!! Thanks for posting this. I planning on making a set soon and it's always nice to have a reference point. |
I like the inner and outer ring idea but did the runs get rotated around ay all and bunched up Sent from my MB855 using Xparent Blue Tapatalk 2 |
Re: Tire Chains 101!!!! step by step. Picture Heavy!! Great write up..winter is coming fast up here in MN this will come in handy! JC |
Re: Tire Chains 101!!!! step by step. Picture Heavy!! I made a set for my 2wd Slash last year but the right wheel chain always crept off the sides after 5 minutes of running. I switched to paddles or spikes when running in the snow. They probably would work best for trucks that don't have huge amounts of wheel speed. |
Re: Tire Chains 101!!!! step by step. Picture Heavy!! Excellent write up. Thank you sgl |
Re: Tire Chains 101!!!! step by step. Picture Heavy!! now that we have a few feet of snow here in northern alberta I will have to give this a shot. thanks |
