Default 3D scanner anyone?

Does anyone here have a 3D scanner (not 3D printer)?

Yes

I have access to this one at work
3D Scanner | Portable 3D Handheld Scanner | Cubify

Unfortunately, it's only OK at best. For artistic stuff it might be fine, but it definitely can't scan anything dimensionally accurate. It's a fun toy though.

Are you suggesting that I just model it? It's not some thing I would really want to tackle. I would like to get a 3d scan of the yeti interior. It's for a project I'm working on. I modeled the wraith interior and It came out pretty good. But this is different.

I've found scans (in the past, haven't worked with them recently) needed so much clean up it was faster to model them... I suppose it depends on what the object is.

I guess for $400 if your ok with a low-res model of something it isn't a "bad" item it is just to get a real good quality 3D scan your talking LOTS of money for a commercial laser unit.

My question is what exactly are you trying to model to begin with?

I would like to scan the interior of the yeti (the lexan piece and driver head). Not looking to buy a scanner. Would like to rent some time on one.
This does not have to be accurate to the .001, but with in 1/32 would work I think.

Have you scanned anything yet? If you have would you be willing to send it to me in a step file format. I'm just curious to see how one of your scanned objects would look and react in my software.
You wouldn't happen to have a yeti would ya?

You happen to have a yeti interior that could be scanned? I'm looking for a scanned interior so I can drop it in my u4 design.

We have one of these at work: ATOS Triple Scan: GOM

It is amazingly accurate, but far from affordable. We use it to reverse engineer PMA authorized commercial and military aircraft components. I'll ask if I can get a scan of my yeti interior, but won't hold my breath for a yes answer. I give it less than .01% that they let me...

Edit: They laughed at me and my "silly request"...

The guy that usually run that room is out the next couple months recovering from surgery. The guy filling in for him is new to the company, not past 90 days, and probably afraid to do a fun project.

The guy that is out for surgery does fun projects all the time. He scanned all kinds of spooky stuff for halloween, then printed the scans on paper and hung them all over the room.

If I remember this thread, I'll try again when he returns.

I've built myself a 3D scanner about one and a half years ago. Here it is in action: http://youtu.be/_m4VgIvaTmU
