Talking is the gd600 a must?

new to maxx crawlin, but not the sport,i need some info.the last crawler i built was 10 years ago out of a tamayia brusier, and just linked up a couple of old car tranny/rearends for gear reduction.ive been collecting info here for my new build which will be out of my new e maxx.im seeing this gd600 gear reduction, but i allso seen some one suggest a lathe 55t(witch is what i have planning on the evx mod)and running a 9 to 72 gear combo.IS THE GD NESSASARY,or worth the hassle of fab?im very mechanical, build my own stuff typically so fabs not a problem, but do i need one,or will it just be nice to have?lots of good info here on crawlin maxxes though!!crawlin in the hills of oregon

its not a must, but they are very nice i used to never run one, but now that i have, i will always have one.they increase runtimes also

a 55t lathe w/ 9t/72combo like you want will work just fine.it will be as slow as a walk. when mine was setup like that, i would get about 50-60 mins runtime. now that i have a gd600 on, i get right at 1 1/2 hr. runtime.

the GD600 is a piece of cake to install. there is really no need to fab anything up. the hardest part of the whole thing is turning down the shaft. you can either get someone on the board who has a lathe to turn it down for ya or you can do it yourself with a dremel or something( be very careful though)..

yes i run 3000 packs also. I'm pretty sure you could possibly PM Bender or JIA and they may do it for ya. if you do have it turned down, have them turn it down all the way to the bearing. you can shave off the black plastic piece that sticks out on the 600. that way you will have a flush mount, instead of having to drill out the motor plate

I think a 27 turn Johnson is better suited to a GD-600 with a 9 (or 8 )/72 pinion/spur ratio.

The lathe coupled to a GD and 8/72 is slow as crap...no wheel speed.

your right, i would never run a lathe with a gd600. i forgot to mention that if he did get one,to go with a different motor- like a reversed Magnetic Mayham motor

You can also drill out the pinion, thats what I did. Get a 15tooth traxxas pinion and drill it out with a 5mm drill, there is still plenty of threads for the set screw.

yeah but if that is not a low enough gear, you cant drill out a 12 t pinion. much easier to shave the shaft down...

not sure how much, but i think its about half. I think JIA would charge $5 or $10 to shave it down :? not sure, you would have to PM him.he should just order a bunch and have them down and sell then (hint hint )

Default How I ground down my GD-600 shaft

[QUOTE=bandit crawler]how much does the shaft of the gd-600 have to be trimmed down?[/QUOTE

After mounting my GD-600 to the motor mount w/ the motor hooked to the esc,
I used the motors power to turn the shaft . I took a flat metal file and use it to
grind down the shaft. As said previously (by someone else) be very careful, because the shaft grinds down quickly

Or 3mm, right? Just depends on if you like metric or standard(US) measurements.
