TRX4 wheel fitment info So the portals on the TRX4 create some challenges with fitting some wheels, they purpose here is to show what works and what doesn't. We all know the internet reaction will be fair and reasonable when someone buys wheels that don't fit a Traxxas product. Things of note: 1: The TRX4 axle is 6 mm that steps down to a 4 mm thread. Wheels that have 5 mm axle holes may not fit all the way on the axle as there is a little part of the 6 mm portion of the axle that extends past the hex. 2: Internal beadlocks with a dished back ring (such as Vanquish, some SSD, and RC4WD steel wheels) have the most clearance on the inside. You can run any SLW hub (down to Locked Up .185 hubs) and have plenty of clearance. 3. External beadlocks and internal beadlocks with flat rear rings will most likely need wider hubs to clear the portals, the minimum hub size will depend on the ring design and inner diameter. On to the pictures: Incision Methods - These barely clear the portal with the #3 hub, I would suggest these as the smallest hubs to use. http://i.imgur.com/nIVfDail.jpg http://i.imgur.com/zlmah61l.jpg http://i.imgur.com/gfmjglNl.jpg SSD steel wheels - Plenty of clearance, run any size SLW hub (shown with .475 hubs). The stock hubs will not fit all the way on to the axle shaft. http://i.imgur.com/lKp3DiKl.jpg http://i.imgur.com/ymRywlYl.jpg http://i.imgur.com/H5fG4g2l.jpg Vanquish KMC Bullies - Plenty of clearance, run any size SLW hub (shown with .185 hubs). http://i.imgur.com/edGaeqol.jpg http://i.imgur.com/kR8Yx1yl.jpg http://i.imgur.com/HUbHasal.jpg Super Shafty Uber Hafties - Some clearance issues with these, .475 hubs with Beef Patties provided nearly enough spacing to clear but the rear ring screws contact one of the portal screws. Switching the hardware to button heads may be enough to stop the contact, otherwise I would say .475 hubs with .100 spacers would be the minimum amount of hub offset you could run. http://i.imgur.com/i6HwQrnl.jpg http://i.imgur.com/H33OFiAl.jpg http://i.imgur.com/OvRG313l.jpg Gmade steel wheels - These fit surprising well, they fit over the wider part of the axle and have plenty of clearance. A good choice to narrow up the track width of the truck. http://i.imgur.com/1JCxYISl.jpg http://i.imgur.com/1JCxYISl.jpg http://i.imgur.com/IN3ishTl.jpg RC4WD steel wheels - These do not fit all the way on to the axle shaft, drilling of the hub or filing down the axle shaft would be required. You can see they barely engage the hex hub without modification. Otherwise, the clear the portal easily. http://i.imgur.com/UjJ09VEl.jpg http://i.imgur.com/U2kIbSll.jpg http://i.imgur.com/0uDIy5Zl.jpg GCM 1.9 8 holes - Do not fit all the way onto the axle shaft but do clear the portal. Modification would be required for proper fit. http://i.imgur.com/ShKJrgcl.jpg http://i.imgur.com/JXgQB0Al.jpg http://i.imgur.com/TPQ08pQl.jpg Ebay Dick Cepek knockoffs - Do not fit, the rear ring contacts the portals badly and doesn't fully fit on the axle shaft. This may be the case for many of the fancy RC4WD wheels as well. http://i.imgur.com/Rs9KTxll.jpg http://i.imgur.com/NDFbdMWl.jpg http://i.imgur.com/JylVew8l.jpg SSD 1.55 steel wheels - The stock hub does not fit all the way onto the axle but clear the portal. http://i.imgur.com/SYYeewkl.jpg http://i.imgur.com/atbTbRFl.jpg That is all I have for now, other owners are free to add their findings. "thumbsup" Update: More wheels! Gearhead 12 Pack - In narrow offset, they clear everything easily. (Can you tell these are the wheels I'm running ) http://i.imgur.com/3BpSU9Rl.jpg http://i.imgur.com/4wbhGqnl.jpg Motoworx 9 hole SLW versions - Very tight fit but do clear, clearance is similar to Locked Up wheels shown below. These wheels are shown with SSD hubs which are pretty close to .225 SLW hubs. http://i.imgur.com/HBZDk28l.jpg http://i.imgur.com/b8kAN7rl.jpg Axial 8 hole - These particular wheels had a hex glued into them that didn't really fit the TRX4 axle so I had to eyeball this one. Clearance looks to be very tight, some rubbing of the portal case may occur around the rear ring screws. http://i.imgur.com/GsJKU7Yl.jpg http://i.imgur.com/2gUOusol.jpg |

Re: TRX4 wheel fitment info Point of clarification on SSD wheels: If your wheels came with hubs that fit wraith hexes like these, they will fit on the TRX4 axle. http://ssd-rc.com/images/19%20steel%...0black%202.jpg If they came with hubs that fit a flat face hex like these, they will not fit on all the way. http://ssd-rc.com/images/wheel-black-2.jpg Most of their wheels come with the hub to fit wraith hexes now but some do not (like 1.55s and older 1.9 steel wheels). |
Re: TRX4 wheel fitment info Wow! Great info and thank you for taking the time to do this. Really surprised about the gmades. I have a set lying around waiting for a never ending project to finish. Might have to put some tires on them. You woldn't happen to have some 1.9 axial 8hole beadlocks around to test fit? |

Re: TRX4 wheel fitment info I just tested my axial 1.9 8 holes and yes, they fit. |
Re: TRX4 wheel fitment info Good info, we will be releasing spare hubs for Wraith style hexes soon. Thanks |
Re: TRX4 wheel fitment info Hi SSD, I used a set of ssd hexes from 2.2 steelies with my locked up rc wheels. Just so you know, you already make compitable hexes. |

Thanks for the info. Can you describe the difference between the wraith hexes and standard flat face hexes? From looking at the pictures the hex female fitting on the wheels looks similar. |

Re: TRX4 wheel fitment info Awesome post, answered some questions I had. Was glad to see the clarification on the SSD wheels since I just ordered another set that I plan to use in one of these trucks. |
Re: TRX4 wheel fitment info Locked Up RC wheels will fit as well. These are pictures from Clay@ Carterfab with one of our SLW wheels using a .225 and then our .185 SLW hub. The .225 have more room of course, but both fit. * Depending on which .185 version you have you may need to chamfer the inside of the hole the axle pokes through. I'll confirm this asap. Until we have our truck in hand I can't really say if our 8L or AO8 wheels will fit. I suspect the 8L will need the center hole to be slightly enlarged do to the portion of axle shaft that is 5mm. That would be easy to do at home and would not impact the centering of the wheel on the axle. For AO8 wheels, we will likely need a tweak to the flanges, but that's not a huge issue to get done. Anyway, here are the SLW shots from Clay. .225 http://www.lockeduprc.net/19wheels/IMG_0192.JPG .185 http://www.lockeduprc.net/19wheels/IMG_0193.JPG |

I just put lockedup iconics slw with .185 hubs on mine but i dont think the ao8 will work cause i think you need the stock hex ( which is aluminum) to space the driveshaft comming out of the portal. By the way love the wheels and with hyrax tires i cleaned 2 loops of my course in the wet which i couldnt do with stock tires. http://i613.photobucket.com/albums/t...pshokpowil.jpg |

Re: TRX4 wheel fitment info Can anybody confirm if the RC4WD Interco Super Swamper 1.9" TSL/Bogger Scale Tire tires fit the RC4WD Jeep JK wheels without rubbing issues on theTRX-4? |
Re: TRX4 wheel fitment info Had to drill the hole in these wheels. But I got them used and was told they are just cheap rc4wd steelies. So correct me if I'm wrong. But once drilled they leave plenty of room for the portal. http://i1249.photobucket.com/albums/...pse3vor7cu.jpg http://i1249.photobucket.com/albums/...psog7ge5zg.jpg |

Re: TRX4 wheel fitment info Gear Head UTE 1.9 delrin wheels do not clear the portal axles, though its not off by much. The fitment is so close its not a full on rub it just grazes it a tiny bit. They will spin mostly free but snag a tiny bit on a out of round portion of the wheel. I opted to file down the portals because I had such a hard time picking wheels. I only had to file 1mm off the portals at the most if that. http://i.imgur.com/9arguOHl.jpg http://i.imgur.com/4YoCo70l.jpg File here where the blue tape is (bolts were scraped by me not wheels) http://i.imgur.com/9VU2YDpl.jpg When done http://i.imgur.com/li9r4efl.jpg I even used the optional 1/8" wheel spacer which didn't provide enough clearance, though they did give more space to the bolts which were extremely close without them. But they can be made to work if you really want them. |
Re: TRX4 wheel fitment info The screw wasn't really the issue, it was rubbing the plastic portal axle housing, but it came within a hair of the screws without the wheel spacer. The bolts are scraped up because I was careless when I filed away the plastic housing, not the wheels fault. |
Re: TRX4 wheel fitment info I picked up some X Spede 1.9 wheels and they seem to clear the portal axles without issue. As soon as I decide which tires to run they will be installed. http://i932.photobucket.com/albums/a...630_193404.jpg |

Re: TRX4 wheel fitment info Does anyone have an opinion whether Gear Head Tombstone wheels will fit the TRX or not? I hate to spend $170 and wait on shipping just to return them if they don't fit. Of course, I could use ultra wide hubs to space them away from the portals but that will ruin the scale looks. Does anybody have experience with these wheels? Re: TRX4 wheel fitment info Hi people. New here and expecting for my TRX-4 (in fedex hands). I live in Venezuela and some times is not easy, but here I'm. Reading this thread sounds me some alarms and the best way is ask ;) so here I go I buy for the TRX-4 the RC4WD Raceline Monster 1.9" Beadlock Wheels:
Is good, some clearance problems? Any help is appreciate a lot. Thanks in advance Dariusz W. |
Re: TRX4 wheel fitment info Any comments? :( |
Re: TRX4 wheel fitment info Can anyone confirm if rc4wd Part# Z-w0129 will fit with no mods? Are these a beadlock? |
Re: TRX4 wheel fitment info Currently waiting on a set of Torch - 1.9" Traxxas TRX-4 Aluminum Bead Lock Wheel Set | JConcepts. From what I have heard from a Facebook post they fit just fine with no modifications. I will update with some photos when I get them in and mounted. |
Re: TRX4 wheel fitment info Quote:
Yeah, they are, especially that price point for a full set of 4. Might even go ahead and get the weighted rings at some point, though I am not the biggest fan of having weight in the wheels because it just creates more stress on the drive train. |
Re: TRX4 wheel fitment info I find it funny how Jconcepts originally was asking $110 for those wheels as a pair (check on amain) and now they are $70 for a set of 4. :ror: |
Re: TRX4 wheel fitment info Quote:
I just installed mine yesterday, and the hub centers are 4mm (I'll be calling them on monday and letting them know), I drilled them out with a 15/64" bit and they fit fine after that. clear the portals with 1mm to spare from the top two screws. i opted to use the included 1mm hub spacer too. I picked up the set of 4 wheels and the set of 4 wheel weights too, shipped for $92 the wheel weights add 70 grams or 2.45 ounces per wheel. mounted the wheels in some hyrax tires, damn they are sexxxy "thumbsup" https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/RF...w2052-h1538-no https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/iz...w1154-h1538-no https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/i1...w2052-h1538-no https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/GT...w2206-h1538-no https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/3K...w2052-h1538-no |
Re: TRX4 wheel fitment info No worries, glad to see that they work. Too bad they won't fit the axle's without drilling out the center. Perchance any idea if they will fit VP SLW Hubs. I mean, looking at them it looks like they should, just not sure about the hole spacing for mounting the hubs they already have. If they do fit SLW Hubs, that would be great because they do not require drilling out and I already have a set of them laying around. Either way though, glad to see they will accommodate the portals without any issues. |
Re: TRX4 wheel fitment info i'll call them tomorrow and find out if they just happened to have the wrong hubs in the bag, since they claim they are direct bolt on fit. i did not want to drill them, but after a bit i just said screw it, i have a nice new set of bits and it only took about 5 seconds a wheel. they do look like the slw hubs may work ? i just went and measured with some calipers and the shoulder that sticks through the face of the wheel is 10mm and measuring the lugs directly across from each other are 16.5mm c to c. * thats approximate since the wheels are mounted on truck and hard to get true center of hex holes in screws. but its close enough. |
Re: TRX4 wheel fitment info Cool, I will give the SLW Hubs I have lying around a shot when I get the wheels in and let yall know if they work out correctly. Don't have the screws to mount though, so I will just see if the holes line up, unless the screws for these wheels use the same size hardware. Would fix all of the mounting issues these have :D. |
Re: TRX4 wheel fitment info Can anyone confirm which of the Vanquish Products Method wheels fit or clear the portals? I am looking for the same width as the stock OEM wheels. I do not want them really any wider or narrower. I want to use the stock OEM tires with them. |
