Default Power HD23 on modded trx4

If i add a bunch of weight to my bronco and at times run 2.2 tires in the mud will the Power HD23 handle it?

If not whats the next step up with out going to the $100 servo's?

Also where can you get extensions for the servos, i have read people buying ext cause the servos wires are too short.

Thanks!

The savox 1230 and 1231 are popular and strong servos for ~$60. Pushing 2.2’s may be too much for the power hd but I’ve never had one myself.

Servos are worth spending the money on IMO. A good one will pay dividends with longevity and performance. I’ve been really happy with protek 150t, it’s strong and fast, and will be getting a promodeler ds470 eventually to replace my savox servo.

There are a ton of options for servo extensions, just search for that wherever you shop.

I have read that the savox 1230 and 1231 are not water proof?

That’s correct, but there are a lot of DIYs to waterproof a servo with using things like dialectic grease, liquid tape, plasti dip, etc.

Cheap, waterproof, strong, and long lasting for a servo will be quite the unicorn.

I have the power hd 20k. It's been a great servo. Just doesn't have the torque specs I require. Don't know if the 23k is gonna be much better. I'm about to buy a turnigy 959 v2. Some good reviews on it. After seeing how many Savox 1230 strip the gears I went away from those. If I had the $ I'd be all over the promodeler 470.

I don't know why I don't see the ProModeler 360 being mentioned more often... Only about $13 more than the PowerHD 23kg. Similar-ish specs at the 6.6V the HD23kg can run, but the 360 can be run at 8.4V...

I'd also be willing to bet the ProModeler's specs are a lot more accurate....

360oz-in ProModeler HV digital servo is waterproof, has metal gears, and 2BB

At 6V it only makes 290oz of torque, I didn’t recommend this one because I don’t think that would be move the 2.2s around in mud too well. I’d take that over a powerhd all day long though.

After adding the brass portal covers and better 1.9 tires, it was pretty easy to tell the PowerHD 23KG wasn't quite up to the task of steering my TRX4. It had a tough time pushing the steering to full lock and returning to center on any obstacle tougher than flat ground.

Maybe im not understanding this correctly but wouldn't i want to be running at 7.4 330oz? And not 6v?

Thanks, i guess that sums it up for me not getting the HD23kg. The stock servo right now cannot turn my stock trx4 with stock tires on the rocks, it so weak.

Yes most definitely. The only thing is once you go over 6v you have to get a bec or a servo that can run straight from the battery. The shift & diff lock servos aren't rated for more then 6v. That's why I'm going the cheap route. For now. $100 for the promodeler 470 then a $40 BEC plus shipping it would have been $150 I can't afford that right this min. So I'm gonna give the $30 turnigy mg959 v2 30kg/416oz in @6v a try

Yeah, true. I run BECs in almost all my RCs now so I tend to forget and only look at the max voltage specs...

Depends on what ESC you're running. I don't think the stock Traxxas ESC lets you adjust BEC voltage....

Exactly.

To OP this is why I opted for the savox 1230 because it’s rated at 500oz at 6v, so I didn’t need a BEC and don’t have to worry about frying the shift servo or the receiver.

Animal, that’s nice specs at that price point! Please update us with how it holds up.

Makes sense!

I’ve been actively trying to avoid external BEC’s on my rigs so I’m always looking for receivers, ESC’s, and servos that can handle a higher voltage, just a preference. This helps clean up wiring as I’ll usually run my headlights/taillights off the receiver box too.

Now getting more confusing, so if i run a servo at 7.4 i do need to run a bec? I will have a Hobbywing wp1080 if that matters.

So for a cheaper route better to find a servo that puts out alot at 6v and not use a external bec?

If he's only running 2S, he could probably wire the servo directly to battery power (it's rated up to 8.4V). Only hook the signal wire up to the RX. Would give a big power boost and allow the shift/locker servos to stay at 6V...

The hobbywing 1080 is great and has a decent BEC with adjustable voltages, but doing that sends the same voltage to all your electronics so you run risks with the stock receiver and the shift servos.

The hw1080 can run 7.4v The shift servo & diff lock servos can only handle 6v. If you buy a servo that needs 7.4 you use a BEC wired to the battery. Bypassing the esc. That's why I am after a high torque at 6v servo till I can pony up the Jack for a bad ass servo.

I originally tried to go that route for simplicity's sake, but had issues with bigger servos (like the 1230SG) pulling too many amps and giving me RX brownouts...

The WP1080 is a great ESC, and has an adjustable BEC, but if you turn it up you risk damaging the stock shift/locker servos. You could wire up a bypass and run the PM 360 straight from the battery if you're only running 2S. 3S would be a bit too high though....

As an example, my TRX-4 is a bit heavier than stock (SSD portal covers F/R, LURC Steel CHubs, Samix brass spring retainers), WP1080 ESC on 3S, 1230SG servo. I don't remember where I found the info but I'm pretty sure the 1230's stall current is 5A, but the WP1080 maxes out at 3A on the BEC. I was getting (admittedly infrequent) brownouts. Once I added a winch I also added a Castle 10A BEC and the brownout issues went away.

You can run that HV servo off a 2s directly. Savox servos are Power hungry, even at 6v .
I always run an external bec with a Holmes RX bypass.
