Soze rejoices the Traxxas TRX4 Sport Kit

Traxxas.... Kit.... Two things that I never thought would go together again since the 80's. Yes, they did come out with that chassis kit with all the electronic doo-dads that I didn't want... so I passed on it. They came out with a TRX4 Sport which is exactly what I wanted from the platform, but no kit was in sight, so I bought the RTR. Lo and behold... The day finally came where Traxxas released what I think a lot of others besides myself were clamoring for. Insta-buy.

My build is going to start out pretty much stock at first, and maybe deviate a little once I tie-up my multi-other projects that I'm working on. I think I bit off more than I could chew grabbing most of the other base platforms out there from other manufacturers at the same time.

Let's begin...

Good to see you finally building the Sport, Sport!

Is that blue grease on the gears the Versachem Brake Caliper Grease? If so how does it compare to Axial's grease, Vanquish's grease, marine grease or something else you have experience with?

I actually started using Versachem from seeing Jeepiac talk about it. It's tacky so it stays on pretty well. I could probably go lighter on the grease, but once you give it a good run it seems to thin out, or at least get moved to the side of the teeth so that there is a thinner coating left on the gear teeth.

If I used nitrile gloves I'd probably do a better job spreading it using less because I hate the way it feels on my hands... but since I don't I usually just put more and then rotate the gears to make sure it spreads evenly while trying to avoid getting the grease all over the place.

I can't remember what Axial's grease is like, but I probably have a tube of it somewhere. I haven't used the other two.

I've also started trying Permatex anti-seize on the universals/cvds. It goes on really light and spreads really easily and evenly. It doesn't seem like dirt/grit will be sticking to those joints with it which is the reason I switched to it. I'm still testing it out though, and I'll try it out at CDM rocks (sand) when I get the chance.

Section B: Rear Axle Assembly

Yay, we move on to the axles!

You need this rear axle parts bag.

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7888/...b238ca64_b.jpg

You also need the spool bag.

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7874/...71c5db50_b.jpg

Step B1 Parts

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7811/...5f88c919_b.jpg

Step B1 Complete

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7892/...a4b2455b_b.jpg

Step B2 parts

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7910/...173bc157_b.jpg

I think some have had issues with getting the diff plugs go though easily, but it didn't seem to be an issue on my build at all.

The e-clips on the other hand.... yeah we all know by now that I hate e-clips.

Step B2 complete

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7923/...33994dd1_b.jpg

Parts for Step B3

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7870/...933b5861_b.jpg

You need to be very careful with the ball bearing sizes used in this step. The 5x11x4mm bearing is shown with blue shield in the instructions, but in reality it's black. So carefully measure the bearing sizes, or just match it up with the instructions since it's 1:1 scale.

Step B3 complete

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7892/...1035a913_b.jpg

Parts for Step B4

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7829/...2761b029_b.jpg

Step B4 complete. Make sure to not overtighten the diff cover.

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7839/...f26e6561_b.jpg

Parts for Step B5

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7829/...c5dc36ef_b.jpg

What I liked about the parts for this step is that the parts clearly had identifying markers for which part goes on the left and right. Nothing left up to vagueness.

Step B5 complete.

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7809/...6411ef58_b.jpg

Parts for Step B6

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7917/...1161c819_b.jpg

Again, with this step, you need to carefully match up the ball bearing sizes. The 6x12x4mm is shown with blue shield in the instruction manual, but they are all black shielded. Measure carefully, or match up carefully with 1:1 illustration in the instruction manual.

Step B6 complete

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7890/...3fbdf398_b.jpg

Parts for Step B7

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7829/...b7719f04_b.jpg

Step B7 complete. In the picture it looks like I used too much grease, but that's not the amount that it actually ended up with. What I usually do is pack the grease on thick, close up the assembly and give it a good few rotations to spread the grease out, then remove the excess. Didn't bother to or rather forgot to another picture post excess removal though.

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7855/...9d2a994f_b.jpg

Parts for Step B8

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7855/...eb5e49f5_b.jpg

Step B8 complete. Be sure not to over-tighten the screws in this step.

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7900/...cc746901_b.jpg

Step B9 parts

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7816/...a086a76b_b.jpg

Step B9 complete

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7864/...0ce3a5c3_b.jpg

Parts for Step B10

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7890/...967da809_b.jpg

No need for fiddly pins that fall out of the hexes! Thank you Traxxas! Was nice that this kit comes with metal wheel hexes and locking screw pins.

Step B10 complete

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7819/...42b562b4_b.jpg

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7923/...fbf4b85c_b.jpg

And... we're done with Section B - Rear Axle Assembly.

That grease sounds like the stuff I've used. It does seem like you know when you put too much on because it always gets pushed to the outside.

Good start to a thread!

Re: Soze rejoices the Traxxas TRX4 Sport Kit

Section C: Front Axle Assembly

You'll need the front axle parts bag.

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7803/...9967bf59_b.jpg

Steps C1- C4 are pretty much the same as the rear axle assembly steps B1-B4, so I'll skip over those.

Parts for Step C5

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7869/...21254c4c_b.jpg

Step C5 complete

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7857/...242e5e4a_b.jpg

Step C6 is the same as rear axle Step B6

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7855/...482f23dd_b.jpg

Parts for Step C7

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7887/...91e2650c_b.jpg

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7875/...5e07db7b_b.jpg

Also trying out/starting to use Permatex anti-seize on my CVD/Universal joints.

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7877/...62b6c4c1_b.jpg

You can put on a little of it, and it spreads really easily and evenly with a few rotations.

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7882/...6fd49679_b.jpg

Versachem grease on the gears

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7842/...cbf2e7b5_b.jpg

Step C7 complete

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7857/...b83081bb_b.jpg

Parts for Step C8

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7904/...69f1cc85_b.jpg

Step C8 complete

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7808/...8155182b_b.jpg

Step C9 is basically the same as rear axle Step B10 except one of the link mounts is now a link mount + panhard mount.

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7871/...a0e5b2d2_b.jpg

And now we're done with Section C - Front Axle Assembly.

We now have a set of TRX4 Sport axles!

I use the same thing on my universals for the same reason. Have been using it for a couple of years and have had 0 issues. I also use it on the pivot balls for link ends...

Yeah, I go through this kind of tedious process with the grease of packing it on thick first, then removing excess later. Sometimes I don't even remove the excess right away. I'll finish the build, put in a few packs... then go back and clean out any excess. I figure putting it under light power a few times helps the grease spread out evenly, plus I get to check if I actually missed anything when I open it back up.

I may have even picked up the suggestion from you. One of the many reasons why forums are better than social media for documenting builds. Anyway, I did go back to my older builds and cleaned off all the grease I was using on those CVDs and replaced with this Permatex stuff.

Parts for Step D2

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7912/...18d11f87_b.jpg

Once again, it's nice that Traxxas clearly marked pieces with FR, FL, RR, RL so that there is no confusion which brackets go where.

I was missing the 3x10mm as well. My kit also missing a servo screw and one for the front light socket. It must just be the batch.

Re: Soze rejoices the Traxxas TRX4 Sport Kit

I wasn't missing any screws, but I was astounded that there were very few leftovers and absolutely no c-clips.

Did your chassis rails come pre-scratched like mine?

I had scratches, but I'm not sure if it was pre-scratched or self scratched! :lmao:

I could see it getting scratched in the bag though... the frame rails are rubbing up on each other as packaged.

Re: Soze rejoices the Traxxas TRX4 Sport Kit

That anti seize you used on the CVD's reminds me of some stuff I used at work a few years ago. It actually contained silver! So wasn't cheap, but I wasn't paying for it

Nice to see another sport build. The quality of kits recently is getting much better that just a short time ago. i was very impressed with my Venture SBK. Seems like companies are realising people won't buy crap any more. Can only be a good thing.

Re: Soze rejoices the Traxxas TRX4 Sport Kit

Section E: Electronics Installation

So as far as electronics go, I'll be using the following:

Turnigy MG959 V2 Servo (eBay)
Holmes Hobbies Trailmaster Sport 550 21T Brushed motor (eBay)
FlySky GR3E 2.4GHz 3-Channel Receiver (eBay)
FlySky GT-3C 2.4 GHz Radio (eBay)
HobbyWing Quicrun WP-1080 Esc (ebay)

You'll need the electronics parts bag for this section

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7891/...21a08bdb_b.jpg

Step E1 Parts

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7836/...e2d9e308_b.jpg

Step E1 complete. Fits like a glove.

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7822/...c6e4ba70_b.jpg

Step E2 parts

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7915/...936515cd_b.jpg

You'll notice that I'm using the stock 17T pinion, and the stock 39T spur from the earlier transmission step. I'm building it as is initially as I'm using the Holmes Hobbies 21T 550 motor instead of the Traxxas 21T Titan Reverse 550. I've already purchased the 45T spur + pads and 12T/13T pinions to be used later.

Using a Holmes Hobbies 550 21T Trailmaster Sport. I really should swap to using bullet plugs, but I've got a bunch of Tamiya style connectors in my parts... and it just makes sense to use them.

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7833/...e755b300_b.jpg

So the Holmes Hobbies motor shaft is shorter than a Traxxas Titan motor shaft, so I had to mount the pinion the opposite way from what the instructions wanted.

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7927/...c43e446f_b.jpg

With the stock 17T pinion + 39T spur, we'll be using the "C" mounting hole on the motor mount. I might look into updating this part later on.

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7914/...37f9eb01_b.jpg

Step E2 complete

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7875/...e1fb70e2_b.jpg

Parts for Step E3

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7863/...7901cc8d_b.jpg

Step E3 complete. Using a FlySky GR3E receiver so there were a few challenges in regards to the length of antenna, receiver wire lengths, etc.

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7883/...643f8c9c_b.jpg

Step E4 parts

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7832/...4d881f72_b.jpg

Using a Turnigy MG959v2 servo that I had on hand for now.

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7851/...9c263a01_b.jpg

Step E4 complete

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7915/...52b39e26_b.jpg

Step E5 had two 3x12mm screws used for mounting the Traxxas esc. I'm using a Hobbywing Quicrun WP1080, so those weren't needed.

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7909/...8d842caf_b.jpg

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7892/...c865551c_b.jpg

Step E6 parts

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7836/...c3a7d115_b.jpg

Step E6 complete. You can see I rotated my receiver around. I did it to accomodate wire lengths. I'm still playing around with it to see if I can get the receiver light to line up with the receiver light window on the case.

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7810/...ba2c507d_b.jpg

Step E7 Parts

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7806/...193faed2_b.jpg

Step E8 is basically routing the wires to the receiver and securing them with the included zip ties. I had to create 2 wire extensions as neither the servo nor the esc wire was long enough to reach the inside of the box comfortably. It looks like I'll have to create 2 more longer ones so that I can turn the receiver around to the other orientation and hopefully line up the light to the light case light window.

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7868/...31d191ef_b.jpg

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7873/...5a41ac7d_b.jpg

Parts for Step E9

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7834/...9a046742_b.jpg

You need to grease the foam seal on the receiver box outlet

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7897/...86cbd2c8_b.jpg

Receiver box o-ring in place

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7853/...d9ddc66b_b.jpg

Step E9 completed. Receiver box all closed up.

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7843/...54a39dfe_b.jpg

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7864/...9b193a87_b.jpg

Parts for step E10

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7848/...75c2ff0c_b.jpg

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7885/...b371f2d1_b.jpg

Step E10 completed. I have a feeling this is going to be coming off eventually for a 3D printed low center of gravity tray in the future.

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7816/...fc52ed2c_b.jpg

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7817/...e34c28cf_b.jpg

Parts for step E11. Metal servo horn included!

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7922/...59048bdc_b.jpg

Step E11 complete

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7859/...fb05f936_b.jpg

That completes Section E - Electronics Assembly!

Yours were probably pre-scratched as well. Horrible packaging on the frame rails. That and the lack of extra hardware are really my only major gripes about this otherwise awesome kit.

Does Traxxas offer the slipper pads separately or are you using another brand for the 45T spurt?

Anti-seize is messy stuff. It's not something I ever want on my RC bench. :lmao: I'm still wondering how it looks after mud and water. You'll have to keep us posted. But I think somewhere else you said you stick to the dry.

Nice build thread! Very detailed and informative. Who needs a manual when you have Soze!

It's great to see all the Sport Kit builds going on at the same time. Kinda makes me want to buy another and join in.

I really enjoy watching your build on YouTube. Looking forward to the next.

Unfortunately you need the whole rebuild kit to get the slipper pad. $11.99

I'm wondering if we can just find the correct material and cut out our own slipper pads. Food for thought.

Yes, I do stick to dry, so wet isn't an issue. I especially stay out of mud. LOL It's bad enough when my son's cleats are caked with mud from a soggy field.... if my RC was caked with mud....

The anti-seize I try to put little on and then spread it. I just need to remember to keep my hands away from the cv joints when handling the truck. Otherwise, so far it hasn't been too messy.

Thanks! I do it just as a way for me to remember what I did and what I was doing. It's nice too that if I come across something to watch out for I can document it so that I can reference later on. If it helps other people, then great! Or it can just be entertainment if I leave the parts where e-clips go flying in all directions... LOL (honestly though e-clips were OK on this kit. not having to build the shocks probably helps too. Some other kits have e-clips in nasty places that are hard to clip on)

That's the only thing I found. A slipper pad from something else has to fit - at least you would think. The slipper delete plate is only $12 and I lock mine down tight so maybe that's what I'll do.

You can also go on eBay and get takeoff parts that include the spur with installed slipper pad, etc for less than $12.

Not really, especially considering what it's been driven through in that time. It's hard to get a good photo of it though. New Sport kit will be here in a few days, all the fancy parts are getting switched from this truck to the new one, I'll get better pics when I disassemble it...

Also, sorry about the mini- thread jack Soze, lol

Nah man it's still relevant! Since I am using anti-seize on my CVDs and driveshafts.

in a bind a friend of mine used like cabinet anti slip padding stuff in place of a slipper pad in a brushless 3s powered yeti and its holding really well and is quite impressive haha

Oh yeah, the dreaded e-clips! I remember building my first Team Associated RC-10 back in the late 80's. That kit is full of them. Surprisingly I did not lose too many.

RED ALERT! One of the output drives is defective with the slots cut at an angle instead of straight up and down. This caused the driveshaft to bind.

Called up Traxxas.
me - "Hey, um... I just bought a TRX4 Sport kit, and one of the parts is defective."
Traxxas - "what part is it, and what's the part number?"
me - "It's the output drive that you can find in part# 8295"
Traxxas - "what's your name and address?"
me - "My name is #####, and my address is #####..."
Traxxas - "ok we'll send one out to you right away"
me - "That's it?"
Traxxas - "That's it!"

Few days later this showed up in the mailbox. Back in business!

That's great support from Traxxas!! I don't know if the same would happen in the UK though.

Also bummed as I missed out on a used Sport on ebay last Sunday. They are rare in the UK though.

Section G: Final Chassis Assembly

Coming to the home stretch of this build!

These are the parts for Step G1.

https://live.staticflickr.com/7809/4...2a607ede_b.jpg

Pay attention to the rotation direction for the tires as they are directional. I will not be gluing on the tires and using the wheels even though I think they look decent, because I much prefer using beadlock wheels. I'm going to give these tires a shot first stock, and modded with siping/cutting.

For the rest of this section you will need the "Body Mounting Bag"

So, I encountered my second issue with this kit. I was missing a 3x10 screw. At this point of the build, I should have 12 total 3x10mm BCS screws. I had 11. This is where Traxxas probably should give some extra hardware in case they miscount.

Putting together the front bumper assembly requires 2 3x10mm and 1 2.6x8mm. Luckily, I had an extra 3x10mm screw that I poached from my GMADE GOM box of parts.

This completes "Section G: Final Chassis Assembly"!

Re: Soze rejoices the Traxxas TRX4 Sport Kit

Section H: Body Assembly

Let's wrap this build up in stock form and get this thread ready for upgrade and crawling updates.

So, the weather finally warmed up, and I got around to painting the body. I used the following for getting this body done.

Paint:
Tamiya PS-5 Black
Tamiya PS-30 Brilliant Blue
Tamiya PS-23 Gunmetal
Tamiya PS-55 Flat Clear
Plasti-Dip

Masking:
Tamiya 5mm Masking tape for Curves
Frog Tape (for general masking)

Here's the end result for the body.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...4ffb266b_b.jpg

Here's the Tamiya 5mm Masking tape for Curves that I used.

These are the parts for Step H1

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...a418b3c6_b.jpg

Step H1 complete

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...6634a9aa_b.jpg

These are the parts for step H2.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...3fa6358d_b.jpg

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...ec68b77b_b.jpg

I encountered my 3rd Issue with the kit. You'll notice that one 2.5x8mm screw is missing. I should have a total of 10, but I only had 9 left during this stage of the build. Again, wish there was some extra hardware to cover. Luckily, I was able to snag yet another screw from my parts for other trucks.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...08bd9d9f_b.jpg

Eagle eyes will see in that picture above that I used the wrong 3x8mm FCS screws. There are actually 2 styles of 3x8mm screws with that big flat FCS head. One uses 2mm hex driver, the other uses 2.5mm. I will show the differences further below.

I also took this opportunity to add a little sharpie + paint marker detailing to the scale parts. Not a perfect job by any means, but good enough to not look like 1 color plastic bits.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...56627082_b.jpg

Step H3 complete

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...0f70d54c_b.jpg

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...731d7461_b.jpg

Again, I used the wrong screws on these rotopacks

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...d8a91fb6_b.jpg

These are the parts you need for Step H4

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...3140d092_b.jpg

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...fe49912a_b.jpg

Step H4 complete

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...9fcec854_b.jpg

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...39e7307e_b.jpg

You need these parts for Step H5

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...4dd4e6a7_b.jpg

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...b2d20b9f_b.jpg

Step H5 complete (still the wrong screws on the rotopacks)

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...212d1458_b.jpg

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...5435cab7_b.jpg

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...2d5901bb_b.jpg

So getting the final step H6.... I discovered I used the wrong 3x8mm FCS screws for the rotopacks. There are two types of 3x8mm FCS screws included in the kit. One type uses 2mm hex drivers and the other 2.5mm hex drivers. The one with the bigger flat head and 2mm fitting is used for the rotopacks. The rest are for mounting the Expedition cage onto the body.

The top FCS screw is for the rotopacks.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...52b87dff_b.jpg

The right screw is the correct one.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...8ff6fec2_b.jpg

You'll need these parts for step H6

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...9493db8c_b.jpg

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...5ab31dc7_b.jpg

Step H6 complete

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...11c431bf_b.jpg

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...9c29f57e_b.jpg

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...f3643606_b.jpg

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...cb30e14e_b.jpg

And that completes "Section H: Body assembly"!

The build in stock form is now complete!

Tamiya PS30 Brilliant Blue. The purple hue in some of the pictures is from the extreme "white" light from my LED lamp.
