TRX4 Sport Kit on its way. Motor Reccomendations?

So I finally ordered the TRX4 Sport Kit and super excited to get it. I will be using a HobbyWing WP1080 and looking for a motor recommendation. I was going to go with the HH Crawlmaster 550 but they are out of stock. It looks like most motors on his site are out of stock right now.

So I am trying to find another motor to use. I have a 35t 3slot motor, WP1080 and 3s lipo in my Ascender kit with stock gearing and like it. I would rather more low speed crawling ability then top speed which is more or less what the Ascender gives me.

Any recommendations? Should I keep trying to find a 550 or just put a 5 slot 540 can in it? Would that even make much difference?

Thanks,
Stomp

Be prepared, People are going to say a 540 can won’t work, but it definitely works, and it definitely doesn’t overheat. I am currently using an RC4WD 45T 540 can on 2.2s and it’s been better than my Traxxas 550 motor.

My first run with the Traxxas motor on 2.2s instantly smoked. Like a huge smoke show. Then I got the RC4WD 45t and it’s fine. I’m not even running fans either. The only difference I see is since it’s a higher turn, it’s slower.

I definitely want to get a more low end motor when this motor finally craps itself, but until then a 540 can definitely works, lmao.

I want more low crawling speed, so I’ll be following[emoji106]

I have the same Holmes 12T motor in my TRX-4 sport geared 45/9 on 3s. The low-speed crawling is awesome and buttery smooth.

Thanks guys. How would a HH Crawlmaster 13T work with stock Sport gearing? I found one on ebay.

Yeah some of those brushless motors look nice. However I already have a WP1080 ESC on hand which was my reasoning to go with a brushed motor.

Careful about buying Holmes Hobbies off of ebay. There’s a lot of fakes out there. I’d personally buy from a reputable dealer.

Agreed. Just get one from HH or a LHS[emoji106]

Some on eBay and Amazon look exact, but the harder you look, the little bitty details make it a fake.

Thanks guys. The closest local hobby shop is 3 hours away, so that is out of the question for me. Holmes Hobbies is out of them. Have not found them elsewhere in the USA. That was the main reason I was wondering about alternatives. Seems like with this dumb virus everyone is out of stock of all sorts of things these
days.

Here was the ebay listing I had looked at:

Yeah, that sucks. Closest LHS to me isn’t so local lmao, about 200 miles away on Oahu. There’s real ones on eBay, just would be hard to see if it actually is real.

I just checked Amain, and they are completely sold out of every crawl master motor.

Rpp hobby has a lot of different HH motors in stock.

https://www.rpphobby.com/category_s/...lmes%20Hobbies

The 550 Trailmasters sport’s are on Holmes Trx4 motor recommendation list.

Op if you are only going to be crawling I’d definitely gear down and go to 3s if you are not already.

Re: TRX4 Sport Kit on its way. Motor Reccomendations?

Yes, all I run are 3s Lipo's.

I was hoping to go 5 slot, but maybe I should just get a Trailmaster for now.

Next question, is should I get the 21T or 27T and what pinion should I choose for the 45 Spur gear? I want good slow crawling, but still able to go faster then a quick walking speed.

Considering a 27T with 45/11, or maybe a 21T and 45/9 or something else?????

Thanks for the help!

I found these posts mention gearing:

45/12 gives you a 60:1 overall ratio, which is lower than most other trucks out of the box (SCXII, Ascender, Redcat Gen 8 are all about 40-45:1, HPI Venture is closer to 30:1). 45/9 gets you to 79:1 and that is the lowest possible with stock axle gears.

And this:

I agree with the above. Running the HW 1080 and HH Trailmaster 27t geared 9 45. It is not brushless fast but faster than I can keep up with at a brisk walking pace. The low-speed control and torque of that setup are great. I got around 45mins of runtime and still had 50% capacity left on a 3s 2200mah pack.

I run the 1080 with 27t trail master sport with 45 spur and 9t pinion in my Trx. Mine is the two speed trans tho. 1st gear is about 5mph 2nd maybe 8mph. Slow speed control is great. I think it's the perfect match for my rig. Good luck!!! Can't wait to see some pics of it on the rocks!!!!

Re: TRX4 Sport Kit on its way. Motor Reccomendations?

I bought that same motor from that seller on eBay and got a genuine Holmes motor. Check out the thread on here about fake Holmes motors for more info if you’d like.

I highly recommend the crawlmaster sport motors. I ran the 8t version on my chassis kit with 45/9 gearing and found it to have better low end performance and plenty of wheel speed on 1st gear. A 12t or 13t crawlmaster would be very nice as well on 45/9t gearing.

Also see here for relevant visual aid.

That seller VRC Hobbies has 171 feedback left for the Holmes Motors and not one mentions it being a fake, so maybe they are legit. They also seems to have a physical store and a facebook page with good reviews. Stinks that it is hard to know who to trust these days online. Anyways I am waiting to hear back from John Holmes if he knows anything about them.

I second this, you say you want a 5 slot and HH now offers them in their inexpensive sealed can version (crawlmaster sport).

RPP has 2 of the 550 size in stock https://www.rpphobby.com/product_p/hh-110100104.htm

EDIT: Give JRH a break and dont bug him for advice on whether this particular Ebay seller has legit motors he's got more important things to do and he's already addressed this:

Like he said just go somewhere reputable (like RPP, they have some in stock in the 10T and 8T 550)

Thanks for the reply. RPP does not have the 12T or 13T in stock thought right now, and I cannot find them anywhere. Seems like they are all out of stock.

1 Attachment(s)
HH Puller Pro 1800kv brushless.
It is running on 4S with 14t pinion/45t spur. Will go faster than I can run, but with tons of low speed crawl control.
Stock sport kit gearing of 17/39 not the best for crawling, too fast.

I found a tiny 2200MAh 4S lipo from Hobby King, running 2+ hours so far with not much loss of juice.
