I am looking for a good laptop around $500 ~ $700. I would only use it for searching the internet and high school work and would probably have it through collage. I would not play games but would like to be able to watch DVD's on it. I have been looking at some of the base level dells because we have a dell PC currently and I really like it. Thanks

Dell's are fine. Though you'll be getting vista and that means you'll be in a world of hurt, budget and Vista performance = expensive. For a decent experience in Vista I recommend a minimum of 1 GB of memory in a Laptop...to be honest 2GB is even a wiser recommendation anymore.

Cough, Cough...MacBook...Cough, Cough.

Don't mean to jack your thread but while where on the subject. What would you guys recommend for a pretty kick ass laptop? Forget the price, what is the best? Im gonna want CAD programs, music, Fast internet, Video making capabilities. No games. I can't stand computers that work half assed. What is the BEST?

I bought an Acer from Wall-mart. But believe it or not, its been a good laptop so far. The only problem I have had is that the "P" key has to be pushed a little harder sometimes. I cant remember if it was 700 or 800 bucks.

Intel Core 2 Duo processor T5450
15.4 Crystal bright LCD screen
3 GB DDR2
160 GB HDD
DVD-Super multi DL
Up to 358MB Mobile Intel Graphic Media Accelerator X3100

Its an Aspire 5920 and has the Dolby home theater Virtual surround sound.

I am happy with it. "thumbsup"

I have a Dell and my brother has an HP... Both were 'custom made' and cost about the same price. Even though I like my Dell, and have yet to have ANY problems (been two years), I do like the looks of his HP better. he's had no issues with his at all too...

You can order some Dell's with Windows XP still.

While true, not on any of their Home and Home Office offerings (XPS or Inspiron) now. The only place XP is now available on the Dell site is in Small Business or higher levels of business sales.

They have slowly phased XP availability to Small->Enterprise business only (though I personally bought a Laptop from them about 2 years ago using the Small Business set up and I'm just a individual at that point).

Vostro, Latitude and Precision are your only options now.

Come June 2008 we are all screwed into Vista...time to buy a few spare licenses for my company to be safe...

I am starting to actually, well not like Vista as much as XP, but am more or less getting used to it. I got stuck with it on my work laptop. It WILL take and run Castle link and I have had no problems with it since I have installed it.........

Keeping on the subject, It is a Toshiba Satellite. It is nice, but then again for what I do (other than live on here) it is not that bad. I was given it to me for work so I can't say, nor have I looked into the price. It will run some good graphics/games also...........

go with an apple refurb. you gotta look during the wee hours of the am because they go quick. you can pick one up for 750 or so.

True. But I wouldn't purchase anything but a business class PC, the hardware used is typically better quality for added reliability. I don't need all the extra multimedia shit that comes with a home based PC.

For your uses and any amount of longevity, you will need to spend a little more than your budget. For your uses, listen to badgers post and let it sink in...

For your listed needs, a business machine might be a better fit for you. You can still get new machine with XP Pro (recommend) as you will get a faster running machine. Vista sure does look nice, but it needs a very powerful x64 bit machine to actually work like it should. In a laptop, you are looking at a very expensive machine.

Where I work, my IT department supports a few hundred machines. They ran Vista on one of each type of machine and could not get a stable one in the bunch. The main campus supports a few thousand machines and they did similar testing with unanimous negative results.

Now for those that worry about XP. It will be a supported program until 2014. They might stop selling it within the next year, but the day that they say XP will stop being sold keeps being extended out. Seems that as the days go on, it looks like Vista is the current version of ME...a waste of an OS.

I can't believe Microsoft gets away with selling such a shitty Operating System and now they did it again with Vista.

I've supported computers for over a decade and whenever I am asked to work on a ME machine (by friends or family) I say there is only one solution if they want my help and that is to format and install XP. ;-)

And the congregations said, "Amen..."

ME...we used to just "downgrade" them to Windows 98 SE to remove the virus known as ME.

Badger is 100% correct. Look at the small business or higher line of Dell Laptops. We have a few of them here and they are very solid machines. Not the best for video-games and that stuff, but for the typical internet porn, email, and RCC thats all you'll need.

ME on a presario.

every new vista machine we get at work gets formatted and upgraded with XP pro. Did you know they make hardware thats vista specific. Onboard NIC will install but not work with XP, had to get and external nic.

i am with eveyrone else. base dell or acer and you will be fine. I picked up an acer ferrari 4000 for 700 last year.
