And don't even get me started on bass players!

Too bad!

lets start off with the obvious:
Victor Wooten

and Les Claypool

Mark King - Level 42 has to be near the top as well as Chris Squire from Yes.

i've seen victor and claypool live. both are great. but there is no way you can say someone is 'the best'. 'best' is purely subjective when it comes to music or art.

my favorite bass player is james jamerson. he played bass on most of the motown hits.

You asked for it!

Jaco pastorius. If he's wasn't the best, he was (and is) the most influential.

It's really a pity he became a raging alcoholic and got beaten to death by a bouncer.

Anthony Jackson! This is the best vid I could find, skip forward to about 1:45 in. He rips, and he's played on tons of stuff. One of the best studio musicians alive.

James Jamerson: the first virtuoso bass player. He recorded more #1 songs than elvis, the beach boys, the beatles and the stones combined! He played on 90% of motown's 60's stuff. Another alcoholic, died in the 80's, penniless. I really couldn't find much on youtube.

Geddy Fawkin lee! Hell, the whole band kicks ass.

I've played the bass for several years, I can't listen to music that doesn't have a good rhythm section.

I could go on...

chris,

i dig all of the bass players you have posted! for me, jaco is my favorite out of all of them. very musical, and inspired all of the victor/marcus/etc. of today. one part of my bachelor degree final jury required me to play jaco's version of 'donna lee' note for note, including the solo! took me about a year to get that ready.

when i started playing at 14(i'm 41 now,) i was definetely into the fast, technical players. i've mellowed to really appreciate the 'anchor' type players like jamerson, donald 'duck' dunn, and this guy, john bazz of the blasters. the sound quality is crap, but you'll get the idea. watch at about the 1:30 mark where he breaks hie E string, and doesn't miss a beat.

Some may disagree, but Flea is up there for me. have you ever seen this guy freestyle? Flea, Claypool, Jaco and Wooten.

even flea doesn't play half as fast or technically as he used to. he bummed out when one of his favorite bass players(kim from sonic youth)ripped on guys that were all speed and tech over feel.
