I teach 6th grade Social Studies and assigned my students a WWII project. They had the choice of drawing a WWII propaganda poster on poster board, painting a picture, or writing an essay. They are due tomorrow but one little girl turned hers in early.

Needless to say she got an A. I was amazed. This is my fourth year assigning the project and this is by far the best one I have had turned it. She said that her dad drew it for her and she colored it. In a day and age when a lot of kids don't know their father it is nice to see one working with their child and helping teach them the value of an education.
We will see what tomorrow brings. Maybe I will get some more good ones.

I thought WW2 was when the imperialist powers of the United States aggressed on innocent countries like Japan, dropping nuclear bombs on innocent people for no reason whatsoever, or maybe to start the global-warming chain reaction.

Seriously, it's good to see kids learning stuff like this. Too many of 'em don't learn a damn thing.

no ww2 was about america defending poland against the german nazis. and protecting pearl harbor after the japanese bombings.

and yes it is good that kids are learning things like this

Sarcasm isn't the easiest thing to pick up on a forum lol.

That is a really good poster though.

the poster looks good her father did a good job! U.S. was staying out of the war intil germany started sinking U.S. ships sending supplies to britain and then japan's cowardly surprise attack on pearl harbor.my grand father and my uncle served with the 29th infantry division that landed on utah beach on d-day. father served also with the 29th in the early 60's early 70's.i also have served with the 58th Brigade, 28th Infantry Division; Detachment 2, Company B, 228th Supply and Transport Battalion

Give the A to the Dad. I wish I could have gotten a grade like that for coloring in when was at school.

Not at all.

But why don't the Allies support us the way we supported them?

Great Britain is really the only country other than the US w/ a substantial number of forces in harms way.

Probably because they didn't feel that they are at as greater risk of attack as we where. I dare say if terrorist started bombing Germany and France they would join the cause. But the terrorists haven't so our "allies" aren't helping quite as much as they possibly should be.

Canada does have a relatively substantial number of soldiers in Afghanistan.

Keeping in mind the Canadian military is a lot smaller compared to the US army. (Canada has the population of California so go figure.)

And that speaks volumes!:x

Did an excellent job of copying.

I'd still give him an A though for introducing shock value to the rest of the class.
Ouch!

This poster seems a little harsh for 6th graders. It's great she worked with her dad, but all they did was copy a poster and she merely colored it. Is that really worthy of an A? Or were they instructed to recreate an old poster?

Even the dad should have been aware that it would be suspicious that an 11-12 year old girl would have created this on her own???

My old man used to help us do projects like this when I was in grade school...everything from the simple posters to paper mache(sp?)to the scratch built steam engine that I still have some 20yrs later.

It was stated that the dad drew it and the daughter colored it...even if it was copied, he still had to free hand it. I'm glad to see there are still parents out there that are stand up and help there children out with things like this"thumbsup" And I'm glad to see that they are being taught this stuff in school.

My props go out to all the Teachers, Parents, and students that do these kind of projects/experiences.

Great Job

Thanks for all the views and comments.

I don't think some of you realize what us teachers are dealing with. What does it matter that the dad helped her or that she copied an old poster? The fact is she and her dad still had to put a lot of time into a poster that nice. I never said that they had to do it all by their selves. I encourage parent help. It is a good way for them to spend time together and for the parent to help reinforce what we are teaching at school. In the directions they were given they were told that they could copy an old poster or creat their own.

Here are the directions they were given
Each student is required to complete a World War II project. Projects are worth 300 points or three times as much as a test grade so they will be a major part of the 6 weeks average. Projects are due April 8, 2009. Any project turned in after the due date will have a 20 point per day penalty subtracted from the overall grade. It will be very hard to pass the 6 weeks if a student receives a zero for not turning in a project. Each student will have a choice of what type of project they want to do. Each student will have to do one of the following: write a World War II essay, draw propaganda poster, or build a model airplane.

Essay Directions:

Essays need to be typed in 12 point font and double spaced or handwritten in print with blue or black ink. Essays should be indented and use proper spelling and grammar.

Essays should be 16 paragraphs in length. Each paragraph should have at least 5 sentences. There should be one paragraph for each of the following topics. Paragraphs should also be in the following order.
1. Introduction 9. The North Africa Campaing
2. The Rise of Dictators 10. D-Day / Invasion of France
3. War in Europe 11. Victory in Europe
4. Attack on Pearl Harbor 12. The Holocaust
5. Women and Minorities 13. Island Hopping
6. African Americans During the War 14. The Atomic Bomb
7. Native Americans 15. The War Ends
8. Japanese Americans 16. Conclusion

Propaganda Poster Directions:

Posters should be drawn on a full sheet of poster board. Posters drawn on half sheets will receive half credit. Artwork for the poster should cover the entire piece of poster board.

Posters should represent a form of propaganda supporting WWII. Popular WWII slogans found on posters were “Man the Guns!,” “It’s a Woman’s War, Too!,” “United We Win!,” and “Use it up, Wear it out, Make it do, or do Without!” You can use one of these slogans or create your own. Example posters can be found on the internet. You can draw one of these posters or create your own.

Example posters can be found on the web by clicking here.
This site can also be reached by going to the “lessons online” page of this website.

Scenes from WWII Painting:

Paintings should be done on a canvas no smaller than 8x10 with acrylic or some other type of paint made for use on canvas. Paintings should depict a scene from WWII such as historically accurate aircraft, tanks, or other battle scenes. Scenes from the home front are allowed as well as paintings of people and landscapes. The scene must be from WWII and the student must be able to explain its historical significance as it relates to WWII. Canvas and painting supplies can be picked up for less than $10 at Hobby Lobby, Michael’s, or other craft stores.

Scoring Rubric

100 points for content and effort.
Points will be assigned based on the teacher’s discretion. Neatness and effort will be a big part of this grade. Papers that are obviously thrown together at the last minute will receive a very low grade.

100 points for looks and effort
Points will be assigned based on the teacher’s discretion. Sloppy paintings that were obviously done at the last minute will receive low grades. Paintings should be finished a day or two ahead of time in order to allow the paint to dry.

This is a link to a lot of old propaganda posters that I gave them to use
http://picasaweb.google.com/ryan.bank/WWIIPosters#

There are a lot of good posters on there.

I know when we were in school we were expected to do it all ourselves and that just coloring in lines and copying an old poster would not have gotten us an A but times have changed. It is like pulling teeth to get these kids to do anything. These students have had a month to do this and so far all I have gotten today is mostly crap, parent help or not. Most did not even try. If I get any more good ones I will post them up for those who are interested.

Again, thanks for looking and thanks to all those who serve and have served!

Freedom ain't free and its time that these kids realize that gangbangers aren't soldiers and see some real heroes."thumbsup"
