Delrin, any precautions to take?

First let me say that this site is a treasure trove of info! I spend hours reading, it's great!

I'm interested in working with Delrin, but am wondering if any special safety precautions must be followed when working with it. I've read many posts here about people heating the Delrin prior to bending, but I've also read that heating Delrin releases formaldehyde. http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-75396.html

What about drilling, sanding, filing ect?

Just don't inhale,lick or chew on it and you'll be good. Nomatter how much the great taste pulls you into chewing on it...DON'T.

Heating it releases very little if any formaldahyde gas, however melting it will.
Just take the normal precautions you would for sanding and and painting then you will be all set."thumbsup"

That, and don't let your soldering iron touch the delrin links and the fumes go into your eye.. You don't wanna know how bad that burns... :roll::lol: Other than adding heat, there are no other real precautions to take with delrin "thumbsup"

if you're worried about fumes, do the heating in a well ventilated area.

I have gotten to the point of wearing a mask when cutting 2.5" rod. Fumes make my throat raw and it only takes inhaling 1 small piece to cause a world class respiratory infection.

Besides that, it is an amazingly easy material to work with.

I don't really plan on heating it, for now anyway. More of just cutting and shaping.

Melting it isn't that bad. But burning it is! I injection mold the stuff all the time. Keep it within the proper temp ranges and you'll be fine. Exceed those temps and watchout. I've had new guys overheat the barrel with acetal still in it and I've had to clear out my shop, open all the skylights and crank up all the exhaust fans! It releases the same gases that are in tear gas.

You were asking if that is a good price for the Delrin on ebay. My family has a manufacturing company and we buy it by the sheet. Just to give you and idea, and 8' x 4' sheet of 3/4" thick Black Delrin is $1800.00 and that is our wholesale price. This stuff is expensive but that ebay deal looks good.

I'd go through McMaster for materials like that to be honest. You know what you're getting for sure that way, and also, you're getting it in 2 days max. I can order just about anything from them at 4 pm, and have it here by 10:30 am the next day "thumbsup"

Delrin

You should be ok. Delrin is great to work with. As long as you don't eat it, it should be ok. I buy it from High-Tech Plastics and never have a problem. It's a great machinable and workable plastic.
