Hobbywing EZRun ESC v2 : Rock Crawling mode

My first post here - I don't have a crawler (yet) but I'm doing my research...

i've just noticed that the popular Hobbywing EZRun brushless sensorless ESCs (and their Yeah Racing Brainpower rebadges) now have a third running mode - Rock Crawler!

Does anyone know anything about this?

I've interested in sensorless brushless motors over sensored because they are more water resistant (I live in a very wet country).

Have you ever used a sensorless brushless setup? They don't really have the low-speed control needed for crawling.

Until recently I had a Mamba Max sensorless setup in my B4 buggy. I now have a Losi Xcelorin sensored setup. There's no comparison - the sensored BL is much smoother at low speeds, pulling away instantly. The sensorless BL would stutter for up to half a second before pulling cleanly. This was just about tolerable in a buggy. In a crawler it would be practically undriveable.
I take your point about the wet - we get plenty of rain here in Cornwall, too.
The motor on my B4 is about as exposed as you can get, so I made a small cover out of styrene sheet to protect the endbell and sensor connector. I can race on soaking wet grass no problem.

I went for a Novak Goat sensored BL for my crawler- no cogging/stuttering and bags of power from zero RPM.

I don't think they came up with something really clever to counteract the cogging of a sensorless BL setup at low speed, what I think they did come up with is a BS marketing scheme to make you think that "their" sensorless system will work wonders for crawling. Just my 5g of copper plated zinc. But, what do I know, I refuse to run aything but brushed in my crawlers. Now my cars... well, thats an entirely different species...

Gotta agree - sounds like marketing blurb, just a built-in profile to optimise throttle and brakes for low-speed running. There's no way of avoiding cogging with sensorless. Sensorless still needs feedback from the motor to the ESC - it uses back-EMF from the motor coils, rather than a physical sensor. At low RPM, the voltage generated by the coils is too low, so you get cogging as the ESC struggles to work out which way the motor is turning.

Castle Creations recently released a new firmware that's supposed to minimise cogging with their setups. It didn't seem any better with my Mamba Max. CC make the best sensorless BL setups. If they can't fix it, nobody can.

I run the Ezrun 35amp ESC with a brushless outrunner & have no cogging issue at all. The low speed is also very controlled, i can hold trottle just enough to get the wheels turning.

I would get the ESC & program card by themselves & Get a outrunner around the 950kv-1000kv mark. Forget inrunner brushless motors.

I run my setup on a 7.4v lipo.

i have this china crawler set, it is junk for crawling.
Maybe outrunner will change it a 'bit.

It's no different to the original hobby wing crawler esc or their 1/10 car esc other than offering a 65amp version, instant forward to reverse and 100% drag brake.

They've finally wised up that its cheaper and easier to have one esc that does the same thing that they had previously in two different esc's.

Their inrunner motor is useless on 2S and only just barely useful on 3S,

If water is going to be a problem for you then stick to a brushed motor.

I just had a look at the program card of a v2 80A Hobbywing ESC (the one meant for 1/8th and trucks), and note it's third running mode is as SuperRoo says - Forward/Reverse. There is also provision for a 100% drag brake (though not tied to the running mode AFAIK). Given that it's a splashproof design, it's a shame the weakness in the system would be waterproofing the sensor wire on a motor, but would work well with the outrunner suggested above.

If water is going to be a problem for you then stick to a brushed motor.

Those are very nice general purpose ESCs too.

I've just checked the manuals on the Hobbywing website, and can confirm the 80A and 150A EZRuns are sensored too! They are also splashproof. They're a bit massive, mind you.

I have an EZRun 3000kv/35a system in my sons B4 -barely cogs if you try to creep along from a stop. Not nearly as bad as the VXL in my Slash.

I had the same system in my super, powering it with a plain 'ol stick pack - NEVER cogged. It would overamp and shut down if it got bound up, but otherwise I liked it.

which brushless outrunner are you using btw?

im getting some cogging when using the stock 1200kv Brushless motor..seems this particular motor is really not suited for rock crawling (i got the V2 1200kV, 35A motor+ESC combo with rockcrawler profile).

I've been reading up on the Turnigy 2217 - seems to be capable on smaller crawlers, and is ultra-cheap.

Outrunners appear to cog less than inrunners because they have more poles, so I have read.

No, brushless is better for water running. You have less parts to wear out. such as the Brushes. all you have to do with the BL motors is re-lube the bearings.

Hello You All

I run first gen. 35 amp. EZrun esc in my TA-03F touring car and two of the 60 amp. versions in my Twin Force Spirit. and to any Crawler/-scaler i choose to buy in near future i'll get the new & improved 60 amp. esc just to get instant reverse and 100% dragbrake that i sometimes miss in my Twin.
ESC's are great and i love the plug and play program card but those ribbed Hobbywing/Speed Passion/Yeah Racing Motors aren't ment to turn slow even though they pack a bunch for 380 size
