My buddy is a traxxas addict. Ive been trying to get him to get a crawler. He of course wants the summit.
Can the summit be customized like ax10? can it be comp'ed?

if not this may sway him to get something else.

Well i have a summit and several crawlers unless he has a machine shop and plenty of time he might be able to make it better but will never crawl as good as a super or ax10 great basher though i would tell your buddy to get a crawler and be done with it.Just my opionion

Thats kinda what i thought. I figured if it could be done, you guys would know how!

Thanks

i have a summit and it doesnt crawl as good as a true crawler.....to make it that good you would have to change alot and would have twice as much in it....just tell him to buy a true comp crawler.....plus traxxas has never said that the summit is a crawler

The Summit is not a bad crawling rig, if you are not looking at competing. The two biggest things it has going against it is no rear-steer and no dig. If someone engineers fixes for those to things it might become a threat. One last thing, as far as comp-super class crawlers go, it is a little short, so extending it a couple of inches wouldn't hurt.

Yeah, I would have to agree, it will never win a competition. But it shines in other areas that crawler can't, like blasting through a stream.

Couldn't the summit be modified like the E-maxx crawlers with a custom chassis and locking out the a-arms? its what i plan on doing with my summit after i get bored with it on the beach crawling the jetties.

Everytime I see the Summit I can't help but think it would be cool to do a R/C Top Truck challenge, with the tank trap and all!

The inboard rocker-arm suspension geometry makes the Summit somewhat less well-suited to being locked out like an E-Maxx to form a "solid axle." You would be much better off selling the Summit and getting yourself an AX10 or used crawler instead.

The point of building a crawler like that is pretty much just to say you have done it. There are a lot easier and cheaper ways of getting a Super-class crawler. The point of making a crawler out of a Revo-based chassis would be to take advantage of the suspension.

jtice, what wheels and tire are those?

I'm not too familiar with the e-revo is it two speed like the summit trans and if it is does it have the same 70:1 reduction? On that note with the correct axles i think the two speed would make a sweet dual purpose crawler/rock racer. hmmmm i think i have my first real project.

Ive never driven a summit but from looking at it the problems are the same as the e-maxx. Too high of c.o.g. and too low of clearance, fix those two problems and it might be ok. Unfotunately fixing those problems he might as well buy/build a solid axle crawler.

The revo does have a 2 speed tranny but its also forward only. Your best bet is just to grab a summit tranny off ebay for 20 bucks.

The problem with the summit as a comp rig is it doesnt fit in the rules. Super class is 16-18inch WB and the summit comes in at 15inches stock. The rules aside you could make it work as a fun crawler with a few minor upgrades. The two major starting ones are all the slop in the drivelines, it will roll back 4-7inches just from the slop with all the shafts. The second major issue is the stock electronics, if you wanted to crawl it it will need an esc with a very good drag brake and a better steering servo (the stock ones arent bad but moving those huge tires when stopped is a struggle, they are only 125oz stock so even 250oz from them combined is way less than most competetive 2.2 rigs run.

If he gets the summit. let me know if he likes it. thinking of getting one.

I've played around with my E-Revo on rocks, it does ok maybe about as well as a Crawler King, but it wouldn't really follow the lines my AX10 or LLC could take.

I already have a summit so I am a go on that part. the only thing i dont know is what axle's I'm going to have to get probably some madforce/twinforce axles or something with a higher gear ratio for the summits low 25:1 and 70:1 ratio. I still don't know if that is the ratio out of the tranny or at the wheel too.

Maybe im not understanding what you want. are you planning to convert a summit to a straight axle?

The tranny will hold up to a brushless on 6s. If thats the only part you need it will be fne in a crawler.
