First of all Hello, Im a Noob and wanted to say hello, but also ask a question...

Ive been lurking for awhile now. I am interested In Axial Products. I have been looking at the SCX10RTR Honcho and the SCX10 Dingo Kit. It seems to me that the kit comes with better (upgraded) parts. Is this just me reading the info wrong ot is this true?

Also, as a Noob coming into the field, which truck do you guys recommend?

Thanks
James

I am new to crawling too and just completed my SCX-10 Honcho Kit. For me a big part of the fun is building the rig so I am biased towards the kit.
The older kit had all metal links while the newer one has metal for the lower links. With the kit, you get to pick out the motor, esc and radio for the rig.
The RTR will probably cost you less money up front and is pretty much ready to go so you will get crawling faster. With the RTR you don't endup having to do the soldering and painting that the kit requires.
The lessons you learn building from the kit helps out when it breaks and you have to fix it.
There some good videos on building the SCX10 and lots of help of available here on the forum.

Anyway that is my two cents worth.

Regards,
Bruce

Welcome.

Short answer: Kit.

Long answer: Depends on several factors such as budget, willingness to build, patience (not being able to run immediately while waiting on parts and getting it built), etc. You will end up with the same basic rig either way. The RTR will get you crawling sooner and you can replace/upgrade when you break or see a need. If you have done your research, you can build the kit with your choice parts without having to replace later. Initial cost is greater with the kit. Long term cost will even out the longer you run it. With that being said, the newer RTR has much better electronics that those offered in prior RTR rigs. If you never have owned an RC crawler, the RTR would be the cheaper way to find out if it's your thing. Keep in mind you will still need a battery and charger for either. Another option would be to buy a star and pick up a used RTR or kit from the classified section (don't ask where it is...). I have seen several go through there in the last few days.

Again, welcome. Keep reading. And thanks for posting in the correct section.

I bought the RTR mainly because I have been out of rc for a while and I needed radio gear.

The electronics included in the new RTR are pretty good and for the small cost over the kit if you need the gear its not a bad investment. You can also keep all these parts as spares if you want to upgrade them and you can then buy another kit and use them in that etc.

Thanks for the input so far. Ive built kits in the past, no crawlers. I currently hace a SC-10 that i run. So im not in a huge need for another truck. But, i do want to get one. I was thinking the Kit, that way while i am building it, i can upgrade as i go (integy has quite abit) i like the metal stuff...not as hard to destroy. i dont need a radio and electro until im basically gonna run, so i can take my time building and see twhats out there as far as the new radios that are out there.

Definitely go with the kit then. My first AX-10 crawler was an rtr, and I spent almost twice the money I should have by upgrading the parts that came with it.

One last thing:
Friends don't let friends buy Integy.....Just sayin' ;-)

I used there upgrades for my SC10, who would you suggect for metal upgrades for the SCX10?

My very first rc was an RTR.. with in 2 weeks i had replaced the radio, esc and motor hahaha...

NEVER AGAIN will I buy an RTR.. Unless i have no choice, like my Summit

axial, vanquish, strc, they will cover almost everything. do your research! if you have nothing to start with like radio gear and such, i would go rtr. the new esc's are good, the radios are good. if you don't need that stuff, or have the budget to buy radio and esc/motor, go kit. it boils down to budget. rtr $400, kit with all the extras $600 (roughly)

I bought a axial scx-10 honcho rtr first as I was new to whole hobby. After taking it apart and seeing how everything was put together from the factory I bought the kit version for the wraith. I liked building it and the upgrades but I would say it depends on your level of upgrade interest. The stock rtr axial vehicles are really fairly capable out the box.

Many would agree Integy isn't much of an upgrade.

Metal doesn't always mean better--most of the time, but not always.

Get to know the vendors that actually offer upgrades for the SCX-10 like Robinson Racing, Vanquish, MIP, etc. Axial has some good upgraded parts. There are many, many vendors that make products specifically for the axial based crawlers. Get to know what is common parts among the SCX-10 and AX-10. Ready carefully through the SCX-10 section and follow that up with the 1.5, 1.9 and 2.2 scale sections. After that read through the AX-10 Scorpion section.

Keep researching before buying "metal" items just because.

I bought the Honcho Trail Ready because I was getting back into the hooby. A couple months later everything was upgraded. Now I just recieved my Dingo kit and cant wait to build it! But it is the same across the board, get the kit.

Kit for sure. Half the fun is building it. Plus you learn how it goes together which makes future upgrades easier since you have an idea how it all fits.

Decisions Decisions, LOL. i definately need to go check out some practices and Competitions. But I am Leaning towards the kit. Thanks for all the input guys!

Well I went with the dingo RTR and man what a dissapoiintment as I shoulda just got the kit cause currently I have had to replace everything with upgraded stuff. The axial esc crapped out like 2 drives into it, then the tx couldn't tell plane from truck (live on AFB), then the plastic 4links kept bowin, then broke the cheesy hollow transmission gear, and now the stock servo has taken acrap. I don't run this thing hard. I drive slow goin over regular rocks or dirt trails only runnin it like 30mins for an entire day. yet I have had to replace parts like I have endless pockets. It'd have been better just to buy the kit so ya could put all the good stuff right from the start.

Tough call and all good points above. Think about what you want out of it and how much abuse you will put it through. If you are buying it as your 5th RC and will seldom use it, then RTR. If you plan on putting it through the ringer build it tough from the get go with the Kit! Either way it's great and good luck

definitely buy the kit. you learn how everything goes together and you can add upgrades as you go. i went with the kit for my first crawler mostly because i wanted something a bit more custom, i added a few upgrades along the way and also used good quality electronics. depending on what you want to do with the truck and how serious you are about it the inital cost might be worth it in the long run.

Well Looks im gonna go witht the SCX10 Kit. Tahnks guys. Now just need to figure out my electronics..
"thumbsup"
