I now this has probably been asked a million times by now. What budget brushed compatible ESC that have drag brake are available that are not made by the "main stream" companies like CC, novak, Venom, ect?

looking for something to run in an SCX10 based rig on 2-3s lipo ( 2s minimum ) with a 35-55T motor. Still looking for a motor too.

Castle sidewinder. If your not going brushless, it is the best ESC for the money bar none. Novak does not at any price make an ESC on the same level as the sidewinder, mush less the MAmba Max. Maybe novaks 1/8th scale stuff would compare to a sidewinder micro, but only maybe. I am not sure about Venom. Many people are rebadging castle stuff now a days. Tekin makes great products, just more costly than castle.

I'm not going with castle again. I loved my SV2 when it worked, it took castle 3 months to get a replacement unit back to me ( by then the entire race season and most of bashing season was done) and my warranty ran out during that 3 months. The new one electrocuted its self as soon as I plugged in a battery the day I got it. They basically said, sucks to be you. I don't feel like anyone but one lady I talked to on the phone acted very professional. I know the MMP is great, I enjoy the PC tuning options, ect.

I don't like Novak much either, don't think you get your moneys worth, except my old xrs ( that was dumbly sold right before I got into crawlers ).

I know about holmshobbies too. They apparently have great escs.

What else is out there that does a good job of forward, reverse, drag brake and a decent bec?

Since we are a small niche there arent really any good, off brand, cheap esc's. Buy a used FXR or up your budget and buy a new one.

I like my CC ESC's as well as the Tekin FX-R. Used is one option, your choice.
I would NOT recommend a Novak for crawlers. Road/dirt rigs, yes, crawlers.....NOPE.
Holmes is another good source, but out of your budget. One advantage of the BR-XL is not needing an external BEC for servos a bit over 200inoz, so that saves ~$20 for the BEC.8)

Since you're looking for "something else", search for "Duuuuuuuude" & "brushless Hobbies" (IIRC). I believe Duuuuuuuude (not sure on the # of "u's") is connected with them. There are a few threads here about the ESC's that sound decent.
Reading the Brushless Hobbies site, their brushless ESC's do NOT allow brushed motors.....sorry

Outside of that, I don't know much about other brands for crawler ESC's.

As to brushed motors, you really can't go wrong with either Holmes Hobbies or Br00d. You can start with basic machine wounds up to killer motors with hand wound arms for over $125 each.
Just get a rebuildable motor, they seem to do a lot better than "sealed can" motors. I know RC4WD sells some sealed can motors, they are throw-aways when they act up.

I have also run Tekin rebuildable motors. They're OK, but I can see the difference going to a good machine wound motor.

Your best bet still might be to stick with another sidewinder. You can always get a used AE-2 as they are proving to be pretty reliable. I'm sure you don't like the idea of upping your budget, but sometimes that saves in the long run. Most of the high quality stuff I've bought is still running where the cheap stuff had been replaced by more expensive stuff. I also run a brushlesshobbies esc, but that's sensored brushless and they don't do brushed.

Tempting.

I tend to look at what I need, look cheap then settle for what ever it is that ends up working. Did that with a brush less hobbies/ cc 1406 setup, and my e revos ridiculous 6 pole setup. The crawler just has left overs in it.

I know the fxr is good. The cc escs are good. What about the rcmart moped ESC?

Keep in mind about some "non-crawler" ESC's:

-No "instant reverse"
-No drag brake

I'd keep watching the classifieds. A few days ago, a member as selling 3 Holmes BRXL's at $55 a piece. I've purchased a new waterproofed BRXL for $75 a few months back. They come up, but you gotta be lucky and fast.

If u can bump your $60 limit up to $75, you'll get far better options.

The RC4WD Outcry isn't a bad ESC. Has a nice BEC and can handle 4s no problem.
I'm using one in my TF2 on 3s without any issues.

I have an axial ae-2 that WAS waterproofed an if you've ever waterproofed with plasti dip then you know you cant ever get rid of it asking 47USD shipped.

I would pick up another Sidewinder. They really are the best bang for the buck.

Brushlesshobbies escs are great, but sadly they don't run brushed motors.

You can't do that in the open forums. Read the rules, save it for the classified section.

Rpp hobby has a Venom esc and 55 turn motor in the sale section for 50$. It says its waterproof, but nothing about drag brake bec.

Yeah, I read that on their site (was going there since someone else had issues connecting to the site...... I think it's a thread in Chit Chat).

So yes, I read up a little on the Brushless Hobbies ESC's, I don't see where they allow brushed motors. I know quite a few other ESC's do both.

Thanks for the info Duuuuuuuude!"thumbsup"

Brushed is old technology, rarely used in racing any more. Stan is focused on racing and progressing the sport and saw no need for brushed capability. At least, until I enlightened him.

You should have heard his reaction when he found out we were decasing and yanking heat sinks off of our escs. :ror:

As far as I know there are no immediate plans for a brushed esc, but the more people that inquire about it the more likely he is to consider it. ;-)
