I've been thinking about buying one. They look like alot of fun for target shooting as well as for hunting. I have absolutely no knowledge on them. Can someone point me in the right direction. What kind would you recommend? How much do they usually cost? I'm doing research as you guys read this but I just figured I'd get as many people's opinions as possible.

Suggestion.

I thought money was really tight?

Yea. That's kinda why I want one. Instead of havin to constantly buy ammo I can just buy a few arrows and use the hell out of them. From the research I did earlier it seems like you can't get a good one for under $200. Anyone know where I can get a decent one for cheaper?

try craigslist. if you do alot of searching you'll find one in good condition for a decent price. arrows with broadheads will run you about $60 -$70. its all worth it though. they're fun as hell to shoot.

Really? $60-$70 for an arrow? I've seen them at my local gander mtn for aroun $10-15.

I have a Ten Point Carbon Elite It is a great set up, and very accurate.. Shoot carbon bolts if you can when you do get one.

Crossbows shoot bolts.
Bows shoot arrows.
I thought that 7.62 x 54R was cheap.
Not cheap enough I guess.

Hmm. Interesting. I didn't know that. What are the differences between the two?

Yea. 7.62x54r is incredibly cheap, as far as ammo is concerned. I'm not sayin ammo is to exapensive for me to afford. But if I bought a crossbow I would have a constant supply of rounds for it. Instead of having to buy more whenever I want to shoot. I can also shoot a crossbow in my backyard and not have to worry about having the police called. That's the main reason I want one.

Carbon bolts, while more expensive, will last much longer than aluminum or Fiberglass ones.

I assume you're just target shooting? Then you don't need expensive broadheads, that's for hunting. (or home defense, the broadhead makes getting the arrows out VERY difficult, if you get my drift) Broadheads for target shooting are just a pain.

And I got my crossbow for $100 at a local pawnshop. I honestly have no idea what brand or anything it is, but it works good for all the more I use it. Look around, used ones are out there. BTW, I use mine for local bowfishing season. You should see the wierd looks you get when you show up to a lake with a crossbow with a fly-fishing reel attached to it. :lmao:

You can get as much ammo as you want for free. Well as many times as you want to make the sound... Pew pew pew pew pew pew pew ."thumbsup" I'm shooting 2 .45's right now . No reloading.

Ohh. Ok. Yea. I will mainly be using it for target shooting, maybe some hunting on occasion. But most likely only target shooting.

If you think you'll be reusing those bolts over and over and over you are mistaken. In the end shooting an my crossbow has been just as expensive as anything else.

Nebraska deer hunting allows crossbows now without any special permits. They are very deadly for deer.

My first crossbow was a used one I got for 100 bucks at a flea market. A pse viper. Not a bad beginners crossbow. My suggestion would be to buy a used for your first one, see if you like it enough before you spend the money on a new one
