I honestly didnt know where to put this as its really not a crawler specific question nor a paint or body question.More of a general copyright questions so i posted it here.

Ive seen alot of independent small vinyl "shops" doing decals and skins that include the use of different rc brand logos. How does this work with copyrights to the companies logos?

thanks for any info.

I don't think that most have issues with it. It is free advertising after all. "thumbsup"

One of my friends actually got in trouble for selling some vinyls on eBay a while back, nothing to serious but a letter in the mail from a law firm telling to cease and desist or further actions will follow suite.

Yeah I'll never understand suits. Unless their biz is decals, why not get the logo out there.

Because if you and I are printing their logos without and making money off them, that's less money that the manufacturer takes in, so then they are losing possible income. Something else too is how well these decals might be representing a given brand. If it's a poor or even offensive, it has the possibility of hurting the brand in other's eyes and affecting the sales of the affected brand.

What I meant is that if they sell decals, then I can see your point. But if they give out decals for buying a product, why not just have the logo in a prospective customers eyes. Although I do understand this is not how it works, at a grassroots level it can work.

I enjoy hearing about cease and desist letters and choose accordingly to vote with my money. For instance I don't anyway but now won't buy any monster crap, and will tell friends and family members to stay away. See how that works?

Also, because all the vendors on bowtie's old scale sticker sheets were cool with it.. I tried to buy at least one product from all of them.

It really depends on the situation IMO. If you are doing something for someone and they ask if you can include a logo, that would be fine. If you are actively selling those logos and profiting from it, then that would not be fine.

Like I'm sure Axial wouldn't mind if someone had their logo painted on their personal lid, but would mind if someone were printing up and selling Axial stickers.

A few years ago there was an RV manufacturer that was tricking out toy haulers and calling them the "Monster Edition" with a big green and black "M" on the front. Problem was, they didn't get permission from Monster, just used their logo on their products. They got a cease and desist letter as well.

I've know model car guys who now refuse to buy Goodyear tires because they now want money to put their names on little vinyl donuts in plastic model kits, something like $5 per kit made (not per tooling made, per boxed model with included tires!) If you want to start boycotting, you'll have about as much luck as buying only American made products at Wal-Mart.......welcome to the cost of doing business in 2013"thumbsup"

I can't say that I blame them. $5 is a bit excessive though...fawkin' model cars are already expensive enough as it is...

I wouldn't be surprised if companies hire firms to search thru selling sites like ebay. Its one thing to sell something on a large place like ebay vs. a place like this.

I could see companies that make money off stickers having an issue with it but like what was stated some could easily see it as free advertising.

Some of them can be cheapskates too:roll:

Had one on a model car forum myself and JWalker have been on get on my case because the HobbyTown franchize by him (I work for one of the franchises in the Chicago Burbs) wanted something like $42.50 for a Tamiya military model that retailed for that $42.50 and Tower sold for I think $37.50........which was also horribly overpriced. Store cost should have been around $21.00 or so, which might still have been overpriced. I'm honestly not sure if some of them have gotten over the fact kits have topped $10 for what's now considered skill level 2 and 3 "domestic" kits......which are mostly made in China now:evil:

They do, some have in house lawyer that deal in nothing but copyright issues and have for years.

There are decal sheets out with Vendor logos here on RCC. Most vendors don't care, and the people making the stickers usually ask if the vendors are cool with it. Like it was said before, it's free advertising.

I can understand larger corporations having a problem with it though, since someone else is profiting off of their name.

However I can't stand Hansen/Monster

Most companies allow usage of logos for personal use..I get customers to get permission for ones like Red Bull and Rat Fink for example and they have been able to get permission to have the skins made"thumbsup"
