Anyone using "non-name brand" ESC/motor combos?

Super Newbie here. :D However, I've been in R/C for over 20 yaers and have dabbled with nitro 1/8 off-road about 10 years ago. Currently doing planks and helicopters.

Anyway, I have always been eyeing a crawler and with Tower's currently year end sale on Axial stuff, I am debating between a SCX10 RTR or the Dingo kit. I'm a wrencher at heart so I'm leaning towards the Dingo even though money wise, it's more economical to get the RTR. I do have an unused 75 MHz Hitec pistol radio - hey!, stop laughing now! :ror: I also have some fancy two-stick radios that I use for my planes and helicopters so a temp solution would be to use one of them.

The question I have is anyone using a "non-name brand" ESC/motor combo. For example, something by HobbyWing or HobbyKing? Either brushed or BL is fine. If you can provide some links and/or wisdom, it will set me straight. "thumbsup" I know I can get better stuff but I'm testing the waters right now and am well aware of the "buy twice" syndrome. :)

I have until the end of the year before these deals expire.

Welcome to RCC.

Yes, peeps have used "non-name brand" ESC's & motors before.

Some of the issues with ESC's are:
-No instant reverse (instant reverse is great when you're upside down and trying to flip back over), some require you to hit reverse twice to get into reverse
-No "crawler brake", or good drag brake. Useful when you stop on an incline and don't want the rig rolling
-No "100% reverse", some limit the amount of reverse you have.

If you go brushless, it helps to be sensored for smooth slow speed crawling.

Trying to man, but FM :lmao: I hope you've at least moved up from nicad/nimh to lipo.

:mrgreen::mrgreen: Hey, that was more than 10 years ago when lipos were unaffordable. Lots of dust and cobwebs on that radio set. ;-)

But, all my airplanes and helicopters are up to date. Futaba 8FGH and Spektrum DX7s.

I would suggest the Honcho over the Dingo simply due to the longer wheelbase.

Thanks Johnny for the advice. :)

Now what's the difference between the Wraith series and the SCX10? I notice they come with 20T motors. More speed AND crawling?

wraith is a bigger truck, wider axles.. awesome basher, but a scale truck...? not so much. i have both and cant say which i like better. the wraith gets used more, the scx gets looked at more...

back to the original question... off brand stuff can be great- most everything produced (cars, bikes,tv's, etc..)falls into 1 of 2 categorys
1- quality product thats mass produced and badged as multiple different "brands" that all come out of the same factory
2- cloned copies of such products.

this is the tricky part, as to identifying which is which as most r/c products will look very similar..
in my experience, i have had at least 20 hobbywing esc's and never had an issue with one, very programmable... actually making a name for themselves at the tracks. good products! you can program in a crawler mode (100%fwd/100%rev with instant reverse and 100% lock drag brake) this mode is extreme and i would suggest getting a program card with the esc and toying around with the settings. i run hobbywing esc/tacon motors in all my trucks
hobbyking on the other hand has some great stuff but LOTS of different re-brands. they have at least 2 versions of each product they sell. do some homework before plunking down the cash with them.

if you have a few r/c years under your belt get the kit version of whatever you choose, there are more threads than you can count complaining about rtr quality. 1 way to make sure its built right..., right? and the only difference in wheelbase between the 2 scx's is link length. dont let a $1 piece of tube rope you into a bunch of electrics that you will pull and replace anyway, and stick you with a truck that spits screws out everytime you run it...

also check the suspension section here and grab a set of the link relocaton blocks

they will make the scx so much more capable and fun to drive

Hey now, hobbywing isn't a no name brand. They are as good as it gets when it comes to racing. I use a hobbywing 3656sd 4 pole 3400kv sensored brushless motor in my wraith. I originally chose it because in sct racing the 3656sd runs cooler than the tekin pro4. It has a larger rotor than the pro4 too. I am using it with a hobbywing sct pro esc but will be putting that esc in my exo and getting a mamba max pro for the wraith. The esc works great but it makes sure the rotor is stopped before changing direction so sometimes you can't prevent a roll over in time.

My lhs stands behind hobbywing and other stands behind all top line brands. I'm getting a castle sensorless with esc for $130. They all run em at lhs.

Johnny: Absolutely! Makes you go Hmmmm at times. Why can't the chargers drop in price like the lipos????!!!

Can anyone give me some links to where to buy the HobbyWing ESC's? I can order from Hobby King but what particular model? I do rather buy from a US vendor though.

BTW Charlie-III, thanks for the info. I didn't know that.

glad to hear some h/w support... most everything you read or hear is either mmp or tekin. i will buy 10 hobbywing's before i think about another mamba. its funny that a year ago all my local hobbyshops laughed at the "chinese junk"... a few of us have been embarrising the tekin guys with our sct's and now they are wondering where their extra $200 spent on motor and esc went?

I want to try a heli so bad that I bought a Futaba T8J and aluminum case for it, specialty tools (blade balancer/digital angle gauge/simulator/training gear), but I still can't get myself to buy the bird. Having $1000+ in the air and the possibility of re-kitting it gets to me. A fear that I don't have with any other of my r/c's.

same place has hobbywing esc and the only vendor for tacon... valuehobby has hobbywing too, and gforce lipo's CHEAP, but i cant attest to the quality of their chargers

Scale or not scale does not bother me at all so now it looks like I have more choices! "thumbsup"

There's a solution to that. :) Get a sim and/or one of the micro birds like a Blade Nano. Crashing is free on the sim and it WILL train you. A micro heli you can have real live experience and if you fly over grass, very little damage, if any, if you crash. The thing only weighs an ounce! Although since you have a Futaba Tx, you won't be able to fly any Blade products. Align just came out with a 150 size bird but the jury is still out on it. The Align does a BNF with Futaba's SHSS (not FASST).

I have a Nano up to a 500 size bird. Fun stuff WHEN you don't crash BUT crashing is part of the hobby. There's a saying: if you ain't crashing, you ain't learning. Of all the R/C branches, and I've done them all, helis are the most expensive!

Hobbyking doesn't have anything to do with hobbywing. EBay will be the cheapest but you can also use HOBBYWING North America | FalconSEKIDO — Welcome. for us hobbywing sales.

Yep, I understand the no relations between HW and HK. I do know that HK sells soem HW stuff so that's why I mentioned HK. I didn't know HW has a us webstie that you can order from.

Any particulars I should look at other than the model mentioned by Calderwood above?

Both valuehobby and hobbypartz are cheaper on esc prices, then add in the 10/15% coupons and free shipping on $100+ orders...

Not really any more than what I said about the 3656sd in my previous post.
