House's Berg

Re: Blacked Out Berg

I think it is time to send old faithful S9157 off to do some sport rig work,
and was planning on using a BLS157HV, but I think I may use the BLS177SV
with the full aluminum case instead. I will use the 157 with the plastic top in my
Ti Fighter where the servo is more protected behind the axle. Looks to be the
same specs other than the +.07 oz...

I have these bad boys sitting here looking for a home too, but not sure if I am ready to run them yet or not...

They are!
Custom slotted armature 454's from John Rob Holmes... Unfortunately discontinued.
Maybe I had better just keep them for nostalgic value!

Get this thing done. I'm working on planning a work trip down your way. I'll need someone to crawl with in the evenings!

Well, running into a Charlie Foxtrot with my current link mount placement and
clocking with my new chassis and links, so it looks like I may just start over on axle tubes...
Time to place another order. :x

Goop everything in place for testing. It will hold. Then mark, remove, drill, tap and set.

Will's inner businessman liked that post:ror:.

Joel, as you well know, all the parts have to work in harmony. Everything
was working OK, then I had to poke the hornets nest with a stick, so now
I am getting stung in all different directions...
With my T1E chassis I had the battery mounted on the front chassis tray.
This time around my plan was to run the battery on the back of the motor
instead. This caused the need for new batteries. Now the battery is on the
back of the motor, yay. No wait, now I have an upper link clearance issue.
Well, that's easy, lets just shorten the links a little. But wait, that will F up
my caster. OK, so a little of both must be the trick. Now I have a lower link
issue. Lets slide the axle link mounts out some, that'll do it! Oh crap, now
my TiOTA steering bar is hitting and I can't get full turning throw. Arrrgh!
That's why I am ready to throw it all in the scrap bin and start over! :x

Building Bergs is definitely not for the newbs! Or the guy afraid to cut/grind on new parts!

I agree you need to start over with new axles...just goop the second set before you tap them. Work out all of the geometry and battery issues and permanently affix the axle mounts last. Second time is the charm.

At least you can buy axles...mine were ~100hrs for the set.

Received a nice box of goodies from VP, thanks again Rob!
Joel, do you have a napkin drawing of where I need to machine my
Berg stubs to modify them for the Axial knuckles?

Yes, I am pretty sure I just need to move the bearing location .040" on
the SDS Berg outer stub to change it to the Axial spec...

Love them motors! Of you can get them geared for smooth start up, the torque and wheel speed they put out is Nasty! What turn are they?

I had some of the 14t's in my XR when I started. Geared down to a 12t pinion and dialed the jumpy start up back to a "manageable" jumpiness and they did me just fine!

These are the 16 turns that Holmes was hand winding but sending the armatures out to be slotted by an outside machinist. They have 11T stickers on them and anodized adapter plates.
I will not be using them on this rig now since my new little batteries are 4S and from what I was told these don't like high voltage...

After looking at a half built rig sitting on the bench for the last few months I finally decided to do something with it yesterday. I went in yet another direction, BACKWARDS. This time on purpose though! My current axle stubs, steering setup, upper and lower link mounts, etc. were fighting change tooth and nail, so I took the axles back off the RcBro masterpiece and put them back on the old faithful T1E with some new bearings, fresh grease, and new panels. It feels like a new rig, but will work AS IS for now until I get the rest of the new parts squared away for the Executioner which is what I should have done in the first place... Up next is a new build thread on a delrin cased, 7075 tubed, Axial knuckled, carbon fiber chassis'd, Holmes powered, Rock Raper. :lmao:

Back on track! Changing one thing is like poking a hornets nest with a comp rig.

Those must be some pretty old puller motors if I wasn't slotting them myself, I only sent out a few before getting my own mini mill. It really helped the startup on those little 5 slots, which is funny because on 3 slots it makes them start up worse! What do you have planned this time?
