RcBros 2017 Spider Build

Well its that time... Time to freshen up collection and build an new sportsman rig...

This rig will replicate my last build very closely. It lasted nearly 3 years, never let me down and was the best driving comp rig I owned. This Spider build will see some small changes. I've learned that less is more sometimes, you won't see a ton of fancy bling on this rig, just components needed to be strong, light and preform well.

ooooooooohhhhhhhh make long time we did't see your build ,i have always like this chassis,is far one most of my favorite simple and great,i will follow this build thread closely,i am collecting parts to rebuild me a sporty and if money is enough i wish to buy this chassis.but did you do any change on the chassis since is last version release?????hope to get some more pics soon!!

Started with the rear axle as it was the easiest :lmao:. Weight on this rig isn't my biggest concern, but it is fun measuring weight in different parts and not sacrificing strength in the process.

I had holmes and incision lockers to choose from so I decided to see where they compared on the scale.

So we decided to use the incision lockers with under drive gears in the rear axle.

When we do the burly tubes up front and convert the sporty to XR10 width we have to do something to the rear to get close to the same width.

You either flip your 3 piece wheels backwards, Run extreme wheel hubs or you can use yeti lockouts and curry center vp axles. I was curious to see where the yeti lockout combo compares to that of a stock or vp AX10 lockout.

Planning to use the RcBros 3 piece wheels, I chose to stick with my stock AX10 Lockout with the VP axle.

To finish the rear end I'll be use the RcBros rear 4 link mount, but this go around I'm flipping the link mounts to the underside. This did require a slight modification to the delrin mounts, but a quick and easy task using the dremel.

Next was the transmission... Weighing in at 74G with all stock bearings and gears.

Sourdojack came over to help with assembly, thank you Tom!
Went with the Hot Racing Aluminum gear set. Also added a Next Level Ti shaft from CKRC, VP outdrives. Robinson Racing Delrin Machined Spur and no slipper. Still need to get a CG motor mount.

Chassis will obviously be the RcBros Rock Spider chassis. A real Delrin skid plate (not UHMW or other plastic, REAL DELRIN), aluminum spacers and stainless hardware. Adjustable front and rear shock mounts.

Mounted up a Holmes 520 motor and this little guy is almost ready to play!

The front axle got the Incision Locker, Over Drive Gears, Fast Eddie bearings, VP Knuckles and Chubs and RcBros Burly tubes

A nice touch, if your not aware are these King pin screws from Tamiya. They are a must have IMO.

I've only ran a losi sporty, so I'm not as familiar with an axial sporty setup. With it being very lighweight, could you not just run all plastic gears in the tranny allowing it to be as light as possible? I run plastic gears in my moa rear axle with no issues.

The stock axial idler gear in these things are very weak.

I've never been gentle with my sporty and we do jump it and get in nasty holes rather often. The last build was exceptionally light with all steel gears, so this should be a happy medium.

Really no other reasons then experimentation. This is about 1/2" lower then my last build. It should change roll center and may affect axle swing. So we shall see!

Yups, that is how we used to flip the Duuuuuuuude's D-Link rear upperlink mount back in the "day". Called it the "Mike Manning Flip" , well because Mike shined a light on the benefits of lowering and moving the rod end point back towards the axle shaft area.

Ive used them on all my rigs and love them. They dont seem to stick with dirt and grime, little to none play in them and use a bigger hex wrench.

+1 to what Robbob said above. I really see no negatives in using these and I think everyone should.

Hope to get some more progress this week. My dad job and RcBros orders is making that hard though lol

X3 on the king pins, been using them for about 4 or 5 years. I also use Traxxas teflon washers inbetween the c hub and king pin. Nabil gave me the idea, sweet for sure"thumbsup"

ok so i have ordered i few set of those tamya parts, i have the brass in one of my knuckle set that turn free and another set that is so tight,so with those parts i will solve that probleme, but don't understand that i nerver seen them in other build thread???but anyways knowing later is more good than never.this is why those build thread are great here thanks.


and farmer do you have the parts number of your teflon washer??
