Few BEC related questions.

Just about to install a BEC myself and had a few questions...

Has anyone used either the Turnigy "5amp" BEC or the Hobbywing 3amp one?
The Turnigy one is huge in comparison and has a capacitor and the Hobbywing doesn't.

Although the Turnigy is marketed as 5amp, that's peak and it's really 3amp as well. I was wondering if the added size and the fact it has a capacitor is any indication it's going to be better in some way.

Also, can i put my BEC beside my FM receiver without any issues?

I would install the castle creations 10 amp BEC, thats all I use on my rigs...I like that its a 10 amp BEC...and I usually put mine in a bundle with the rx in the rx box or bundle all the wires together and have had no issues with interference.

Does the castle one use a ferrite ring?

Castle BEC here in the UK is about the same as $35 or i'd go for one but it's just a trail rig and nothing serious.
Hobbywing one is about same as $6 and Turnigy one, same as $9

and only spend money if they fail to deliver.

Use the highest rated Bec you have, the capacitor will help with short term surge current for example if you momentarily stall the servo.
Personally I'd keep it away from the rx but if that's not an option at least test it a bit before final install and be aware that if there are jitters that could be the cause

Thanks for the advise folks.

Going to do exactly as suggested and dummy fit them together and if any jitters will seperate them but hoping they'll be alright.

I'll go for the Turnigy "5a" BEC with the capacitor first and see how i get on. No chance of stalling the servo with my driving though.

I am new to the hobby, and this might be an old question, but I'm getting ready to install a new servo and I'm stuck between a few options, I have heard a lot about using a castle creations 10a external BEC. My question is how do you know if you need it and what is it's full purpose. Currently running 2s, is it necessary running on 2s on axial Wraith I'm looking at higher torque servos??? Thank you for any tips

I've used both and noticed no difference between them. Currently I use all Hobbywing and have been for about 2 years. I have had no problems and generally I use 2 on each of my rigs. One is direct wired to the steering servo and the second is used for lights and other accessories. If I have a problem with the servo BEC I can switch over to the light BEC in about 2 minutes. No lights but no carryout either. Have never had to do this. I power the receiver with power from the ESC connector.

I've kept the ferrite ring on all of them so don't know what you could see if you removed it.

If you're running the stock Axial AE-5 ESC, you will definitely need an external BEC to gain full advantage of a high voltage, high torque servo. Which brand BEC is your choice and depends on what you want from the BEC. The Hobbywing BEC is cheap, no programming (does have a jumper to switch between 5V and 6V), and is rated at 3A continuous, 5A peak. Prices go up as you look at BECs with higher amp ratings, programming capabilities, etc.

Another thing to remember is that the chips in these switch-mode power supplies are sold 100:1 for every Castle UBEC sold. Unless they use horrendously bad china-cloned parts, the designs are usually bulletproof if you don't overload them.

The Turnigy 5A posted uses a 3A chip. A constant 3A will be fine with 5A spikes, but anything over 3A constant will overheat it fast. The HeyOK honestly looks like an LM2576S design, which is a 5.8A chip (3.5A min & max 7.5A) if it's a genuine ONSemi chip. At $30 I hope it is, as ebay is flooded with clones that can barely do 3A.

Honestly most Hobbyking UBEC's over 5A use some fairly advanced chips. Anything used on a heli is MORE than enough for a single-servo crawler. On my 4WS crawler I just have dual 3A ubec's, one per servo. They were less than $1 each, but I did have to wire & adjust them.

Here's one interesting bit of info. You can actually connect UBEC's in parallel if their output is w/in 0.1v of each other AND you put a schottky diode on the positive output of each (3A diode is rather big). If load increase more on one UBEC, the diode will naturally drop the output. This means 2x UBEC's will provide 75%+ more than one alone.

An older Turnigy 5A UBEC actually paralleled dual 3A's, but I'm not sure if they bothered with the diode. The MP2307 below used in each is actually rated similar to the LM2576S mentioned above.

Been running one of the hobbywing ones with my Promodler 420v4 servo with zero issues. Even pulled the ferrite core off the power leads, run the receiver and servo off of it and it sits right next to the receiver in the box on my bomber.

Hobbyking YEP 20A BEC - its $19AUD so about $14USD and is a German design. Naturally it's cloned but it's meant to be excellent.

It can run some hardcore gear.
