I got my first crawler a couple months ago at a hobby shop about 2 hours from my house. I live in a small town and there is no local store or club. Anyway I purchased a rtr axial scx10 ii. I loved it but my 2 boys played with it more than I do so I decided to get another one so we could roll together. Went back to same HS and ordered another scx10 ii and was told they were out of stock until the end of may. So I bought the last scx10 they had in stock. Jeep wrangler rubicon. I have been running traxxas nimh Batts since I have 4 of them and a charger already for my stampede 4x4. The HS guy changed the batt adapter for me and I never checked the truck until I got home. 2 hour drive. Plugged it in and poof. Magic smoke got out. Guy had reversed the connectors. Took it back the next Saturday and he installed a tekin esc, said it was a big upgrade...well again I failed to check function until I got home. Reverse is fine but forward is intermittent and no drag brake...can't crawl without a drag brake truck just keeps rolling when trigger released and the intermittent is driving me nuts. Went back again this past weekend and the shop is closing for good in 2 weeks. I need an esc that will work with standard scx10 motor and control and has a drag brake. Sorry this is so long. Anybody know if an scx10 ii esc will work? What should I get?

With a stock truck I would go with an ae5, I f I remember correctly its the stock scx10II esc. Its only $40 ish and waterproof out of the box. I have been running mine on my scx10 with no problems whatsoever.

It could be worse

You should consider a Hobbywing quicrun 1080. It's waterproof, it has a much stronger built in BEC if you upgrade your servo. Also has quite a few programmable features and comes with the program card to use them. I believe they are just over $40.

^ What he said. I just replaced my AE5 in my SCX10ii with the Quicrun 1080 and it's 10X the ESC of the stock one. Me and my friends killed 3 AE5s in the past few months, they aren't that great. Check in the electronics section, there's 2 large threads on this ESC.

No, the AE-5 is junk and overpriced.

Get the HobbyWing WP 1060 for $20 which is comparable to the AE-5, but more reliable. Or upgrade to the WP 1080, which is a much better and much more adjustable ESC for the same price as teh Axial AE-5.

I also would vote for the wp 1080. I recently installed one in my ascender and it is night and day difference over the stock esc. Well worth the $40 IMO

I have a couple 1060's and would recommended them over the ae-5(which I also have). That being said if the 1080 works as well as the 1060 I would go in that direction. Currently I am just being a little lazy in not going to the 1080, I am waiting on one of the 1060's to die but it just isn't happening.

Wow lots of good info real quick. Thanks everyone. I'll look into a HW 1080. Anyone recomend a good online store that I can call into and ask some questions before I click buy? I spent 3 hours online last night and my mind is overloaded with all the stores and options out there for crawling and especially the scx10.
Thanks again

I buy all of my HobbyWing stuff from www.hobbywingdirect.com. They are the official US distributor. I'm not sure if they have a phone number.

I have run holmes brxl's for quite a while and love them, got a wp1080 in a trade and i was skeptical but I'm impressed! easy to program and has worked well so far def in the mix to recommend it as a cheap upgrade over the stock speed control

What Tekin ESC do you have. Drag brake should be adjustable. Also you probably need to calibrate the transmitter to the esc.

No need to post pictures, it's a Tekin, we know.

Did the hobby shop compensate you for their mistake because I'd think they should have.

Almost every ESC out there will work fine. I can happily use an old sub par Novak to drive around. And yeah, the drag brake on the Tekin is adjustable even by the buttons on the front, or top.

Spent 45 minutes going thru the online manual for the Teknik and resetting everything like says. Still has issue with intermittency unless I turn the trim throttle up to the point of keeping the truck constantly rolling forward...tried everything in the manual but still no luck getting the drag brake to kick in...I'll try again tomorrow I guess. I'm going back to the HS this weekend for the last time. Hopefully they can make it work right

I think the suggestion by Jack (Post #2) might be the best solution for now. The AE-5 does exactly what the OP is asking for and requires no additional set-up after installation. Yes, the Hobbywing offers more but may be an upgrade for the future as the OP gains knowledge and experience with the crawler world.

In his last post I see the frustration the OP is experiencing. Not good.

Don't get me wrong, all your suggestions are good but I see them as what you think is best from your experiences.

Hopefully the hobby shop gave you something for their mistake, because that's pretty amateur. Also, I would bargain a guess that the throttle is backwards. Try this: make sure throttle channel on the transmitter is set to normal (not reversed), set throttle trim to neutral, and go through a throttle calibration on the ESC. If the truck moves backwards when forward throttle is applied, reverse the polarity on the motor. I'm hypothesizing here that the "intermittency" you are experience is the reverse delay and something on the throttle side is backwards.

As mentioned, drag brake is simply adjustable right on the ESC user interface (mode and increase buttons and row of LED lights)

Also, the Tekin FX-R is an excellent speedo. I highly recommend it. The only downside is that they are not waterproof.

Thanks nightcrawler. Not too frustrated to give up or anything but more with my LHS than anything else. If I cant gt the TEKIN to work I will go back to an original ESC or the HobbyWing 1080. Whichever seems simple enough. I like simple things that just work when you turn them on. Im not really a technical programming/ modifying kind of guy. Just fix things when they are broke and use them when they do. Appreciate the support!

Well the LHS is going out of business and this weekend will be my last trip up there. Hopefully they care enough about the 2 trucks I bought from them to do the right thing, We will see.
In regards to your comments about the buttons on the front, I tried to customize the drag brake but I cant get the buttons to change anything. I will try again after work today before I take it back to the LHS this weekend. Usually electronics problems are one of two things, operator error or they are bad right out of the box. I did all the calibration like the manual instructs and went through all the set up and troubleshooting. Still got issues.
I need to find another Hobby Shop though. Anyone in the Tucson area have suggestions. tucson is the closest city to where I live.

x2, they owe you the price paid for the ESC that they wired backwards, wth? :ror: "thumbsup"

Good, if LHS fails call or email Tekin for help setting up the ESC.

Do not go back to AE5, seen too many go up in smoke. If you must go with another ESC, Hobbywing WP1080 or WP1060 (cheaper and simpler, but not quite as nice) both are waterproof, durable and easy to use.

Thanks man! appreciate all the help here. Thankful I found this website! Total RC newb right here and sometimes feel overwhelmed with the amount of info out there online. Good to have people to bounce things off!
