Anyone have any recommendations? I'd like to take some videos this year. Hoping to find something with a screen on the back, can connect to a phone, and uses regular tripod attachments.

Xiaomi Yi. They have various models and you can't beat them. IMO they are part of the reason GoPro is failing.

What is your budget?

Honestly anything cheaper than the $3-500 GoPros.

If I could get a camera, some handles, flexible tripod, and SD card for under $300 I'd be happy.

Gonna pickup the lite model! Thank you!

Any recommendations on a tripod? There must be 4,000 different flexible style ones. I'm trying to find something I can setup ground level or on rocks to run the trucks past.

You're welcome, but make sure the Lite has the frame rates you desire. RCs require 60fps+ IMO. The Lite doesn't have many high fps options.

I've purchased some cheap Tripods and they sucks so you might want to spend some more there to get a good one.

I have some videos of the original Yi and Yi 4K on my page if you want to check them out before making your purchase. There are plenty of other Yi videos online as well.

I've been using a Firefly 7s with 90degree lens (no fisheye distortion) for recording and Ă  small Eachine TX03 for FPV driving on my yeti Jr and it's downright awesome.

I also used the Firefly 7s on my drone and during the winter for skiing and i never had an issue wihh quality.

It's quite cheaper than the Yi at less than 150$ and less powerful but i didn't need 4k recording.

Yi cameras cover a variety of price ranges. The Yi Lite, for example is as low as $99.

Yeah but i really hate fisheye distortion and the Firefly was the only one i found with 90 degree lens.
They now have the Firefly 8s which is more like a Yi 4k around the same price on banggood.

Fisheye is easily rectified with decent software. And the Yi 4K and up have it built in I believe.

Lite at 1080/60fps. Should be more than adequate for YouTube right?

Yep, as long as you don't want 4K or slow motion videos.

Sorry to jump in, but I'm looking for an affordable action cam as well -- so, you can't get good quality HD slow motion footage with the Lite version?

Thanks,
Steve
Not IMO.

You can slow down any video, but if you record in low fps then the video gets very jumpy at slow speeds and is more like stop action video.

You can test this yourself by opening up a video on your computer and playing it at 1/4 or 1/2 speed. If it's only 30 or 60 fps it'll be very jumpy.

I recommend 120 fps or more for slow motion.

I've done 720p / 120fps on my Firefly 7s and it's pretty nice.
Not insane quality but more than enough to make the kids happy.

Just Pick a cheap model without 4k and try it out first.
Then when you know What you really want or need, buy the best model.

Slow-mo can be overplayed tho. Go look on BookFace and watch videos posted there from iPhones, etc. People are so excited to drag out a 4 second dirt rip into a 30 second slow mo..... Please don't be that person.

It's mostly for my kids. They love seeing their stunts and face-plants in slow-mo.

I won't be abusing it for my RC videos [emoji41]

Hmmm. Honestly I'm not really interested in 4K to keep file sizes somewhat reasonable. But I definitely think I want 60 FPS.

I use a thieye i60e, which I have found to be awesome, and for around $60 including a waterproof case, two batteries, and a few mounts, its hard to beat on price. You can connect it to your phone via wifi and watch the action/control the camera remotly, but it also has a screen on the back.
Its 4k@30fps, 2.7k@30fps, 1080p@30 or 60fps, or 720p@60 or 120fps. 12mp, decent slowmo, and also has a time lapse option, which is awesome. I would definitely buy it again.
