Hey guys I am thinking of switching over to the Hobbywing 1080 and a Holmes hobbies 21T Motor. I seen a lot of guys recommending that set up but I wasn’t sure what the benefits would be. I don’t do a whole lot of rock crawling with it the kids just bash it around and we do some trail hiking kind of stuff. Let me know if that’s the way to go or if there’s something else you recommend and why. Thanks for your time.

Plus, if your stock electronics are in good condition you could probably end up doing this for free.99 by selling the take offs on eBay.

1080 is much better then the stock ESC. More options and tuneability. HH motor has more torque. Personally I ran the stock motor with the 1080 and was good to go. Only switched motors when the stock one smoked. I went with the trailmaster sport 27t cause I was after more torque. Also went down to a 9t pinion. Only crawling my rig. For trailing and bashing I would stay with the 21t as the 27t will drop your top speed by about 20%. You won't be disappointed with the 1080. Good luck!

I also run the 1080 with the 27T 550. Great setup.
If you keep stock pinion and use 3S you still have more then enough wheel speed in 2. gear.

I currently have four TRX4s running the HW1080 ESC with a variety of motors including one stock Titan 550 21t, a HH Trailmaster Sport 550 21t and two HH Crawlmaster Pro 550 12t all are running 9t pinions. The Titan and Trailmaster are very similar in performance, the Crawlmaster Pro is noticably smoother.
Interesting.
The 1080 isn't just the best budget ESC, it's of the best brushed ESCs on the market right now. The only other ESC I'm interested in trying is the new Tekin BXR, but it's $30 more expensive.
They have their own cars they are young 2,3,4 and 8 and have one due in March but I enjoy working on them and adding little odds and ends. I would like to get the red cat gen 8 tho so maybe I can talk my wife into that one for the new baby. I went ahead and grabbed the 1080 and the 21 turn motor luckily they had both of them in stock at the LHS.
And the BXR won't run a 550-can 21t motor like the lovely little HobbyWing...

Maybe I should explain why the Crawlmaster Pro 550 is smoother. This motor has a 5 segment armature where the other motors have a 3 segment armature. That translates to a 40% finer throttle resolution. That may not be the correct way to express the difference.
You can get an adapter that has the JST plug, or solder a JST plug into the battery connector on the ESC.

Tekin stuff is notoriously spec'd very conservatively. I'm sure the BXR would have no problem running a 21T Titan, but it's a Gamble and certainly not covered under warranty.
Isn't the non pro CrawlMaster also a 5 slot armature? I have a 540 CrawlMaster Expert, but I've never used a Pro edition.
This time I'm not so sure... ;-)

Hobbywing 1080WP and holmes 550 21T here and LOVE IT. Stock gearing on 3s wheelies on demand and goes about 15pmh+.
The holmes motors react very well to the hobbywing "initial start" setting. Mine has very good throttle control. Love love love this setup in my TRX4.
I put the stock traxxas 550 in my TF2 with a hobbywing 1080WP too. And that as well has very smooth throttle control and SPEED.
The 1080WP ALL day man. Its the best bang for the buck. And the holmes motors REALLY do make a difference and react well to them too. Well worth the 20 bucks I paid for the green 550 21T. And you cant beat the 1080WP cost for what you get.

interested in the hobbywing as an upgrade as well. id like to get the hobbywing 1080 as preventative maintenance before mine eventually fails. whats the difference between this one and the mamba x? whats the difference between brushless?

Very different beasts on both fronts. The mamba x is much more capable. Brushless vs brushed has been chewed over thousands of times I’d recommend a google to get general information and then come back and start a thread if you have specific questions.
