Is it time to get rid of the BEC?

"BEC stands for Battery Eliminator Circuit. In the old days of electric flight you had to use a separate 4.8V battery pack to power your receiver and servos. As the hobby evolved, speed controls started to include Battery Eliminator Circuits to power your receiver and servos, allowing you to get rid of the extra receiver battery pack." - Dimension Engineering's BEC FAQ

I can understand the term back in the day, but today "Battery Elimination Circuit" seems like a misnomer, and nothing about it eliminates the battery. It seems to me that we need to rename this guy, but for the sake of continuity, keep the acronym "BEC".

I propose "Basic Electronics Circuit". Or, "Base Electronics Circuit"

Or, do we ditch "BEC" all together, and call it something more appropriate for what it does? How about "EPS", "Electronics Power Supply"?

Thoughts?

Bec is a circuit that eliminates the need for a separate battery from the power source to power the radio and servo. No matter how you cut it the name fits perfectly. Now we have airplane guys telling us to run separate packs to power our servos as if the crawler hobby is still stuck in 1987 like the airplane guys.

Not really, it is just the post complete reference I could find in a short amount of time.

BEC is like ATM to me. I don't ever think of it as a Automatic Teller Machine. Just because the initials stand for something doesn't mean that I think about what they stand for.

I say down with acronyms all the way. Spell out what you mean. If you do not keep up with things for a while you get left behind. Took me quite a long time to figure out what lol was. Guess I am just old school.

Or maybe because direct DC battery power from my little LiIon pack is way cleaner and better for my $150+ servo and also ensures I get 100% power on tap healthily to the servo? Just because you want to save a few grams doesn't mean it's a bad option. It's better than a BEC.

Oh, you're going to hell for this one...

After serving 20+ years of serving in an organization that literally lives and dies by acronyms, I have learned to embraces and cherish them. And that goes double for the submarine community, we make acronyms out of other acronyms; such as STAPS = Sonar Towed Array Power Supply.

Who cares?

Given that you took the time to read the thread and make a response... you do?

Agreed, for the most part. But in some capacity I also agree with the notion of re-branding/re-naming it because, as the op pointed out, it's not a BEC at all.

But if it was to be re-branded, it is in all actuality a voltage regulator.

Almost a moot point though since the introduction of the Mamba X and other ESC's that are carrying better on board BEC's that can sustain higher wattage.

I've never liked the BEC term because it never really described the use after ESCs replaced mechanical speed controllers. But getting rid of BEC as common term... good luck. It's pretty well engrained.

I didn’t serve in any organization but I work for a company that sells yellow earth moving machinery. We have so many acronyms that we actually have an intranet page for all of the acronyms and their meanings. Not to mention a staff person that maintains said intranet page as new ones are constantly added. Then we rename processes and give it new acronyms all the time. Big fun trying to keep up with the word of the day.

Yeah, this stuff is everywhere, and the more technical, the worse it is. Worse, is when you go to a different community in the same organization, all of the acronyms look and sound the same, but have completely different meanings.

I do propose eliminating your BEC. Just get better electronics with better internal BECs.

In very few cases have I ever really needed an external BEC.

Agreed. It doesn't make sense, but it's kinda late to change now...

I'd love working there. I used to make up my own acronyms. At my old job we had instant messenger and I got people to start using "WFL" (What's For Lunch) just because I used it so often! :lmao:

And I got my Mom to use "TGIMFF" (Thank God It's Mother F-ing Friday) in her emails just by using it so often. :ror:

I'm going to suggest that to my company. Every time we get a brief about new projects, schemes or general management fantasies,we get inundated with acronyms.

Anyhow, we are stuck with BEC.Change it and the world ends. You all know that surely?
