Axial SCX10 III without portals

Been waiting for a non-portal version to come myself.

Word of warning, say anything negative about portals around here and you'll get your head chewed off.

I think it would be great to offer a non-portal version.
My only thing is, it drives me nuts when people want to bash them because “they’re not scale” At the end of the day we’re driving very expensive toys and I want mine to have more ground clearance lol

I asked the same question a few days ago and got nothing. I just don't like them on a jeep. They work well and do give extra clearance but I'd rather see something more like the scx2 axles under the jeep.

A few of us have put these bodies on vs410s. It’s a great fit.

Otherwise the vanquish axles should work on a 10.3 with a little bit of link tweaking. Axial will eventually have a straight AR45 axle out, which will be similar to a 10.2 axle just offset.

Hot damn that looks good

Does look impressive. But the thought of throwing away brand new Axial portals and ponying up for Vanquish is (do the voice) "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous", and enough to give me nightmares. I think the original question means, from the factory.

I'm sure that you could sell them, rather than "throw them away"...

For example, I've got a long-term project for which I just picked up a UMG10 body.

I want it to be more scale-accurate, so portals are a must.

Likely using my VS4-10 chassis and Element transmission.

At some point I will need either TRX-4 or SCX10.3 portals to complete it.

I'll bet there are others that will be building custom rigs that use them as well.

Neat, you get all that from me saying a truck is nice?

I have a pair of 10.2 Rock Jocks I’d like to use on my 10.3. Is this not possible/not recommended as the 10.3 axles are offset??

The biggest problems you will run into with a centered housing on the 10.3 is getting the upper link and driveshaft to clear the transmission as they angle in towards the middle of the axle. It would likely take a small diameter driveshaft, a little trimming, and some experimenting with upper link mounting but it doesn't look impossible.

Hey cool good info thanks. I’ll take a closer look at it all. I do have a small driveshaft somewhere apparently. Not sure where though, but my wife keeps telling me I have one[emoji106]

What did you use for body mounts on the chassis?

Like the rest of you I’m anxious for an axial offset front axle. I think it will basically be a plastic version of the vs410 axle with an axial style pumpkin. I hope a multi piece axle is eventually available with clockable/upgradable chubs.

The knight customs stuff wasn’t out yet when I did this so I just winged it.

Luckily the mounts from the scx10iii work on the vs410 chassis up front. Only difference is one screw holding the mount instead of two, unless you want to drill, but I don’t think it will be an issue. On the rear I’m just using magnets.

If you want to run non portal axles and don't want to pony up vanquish 💰ssd has an ocp option based off ar44's.

Have you seen anyone do this successfully?

The offset on the ar45 axles looks similar to vanquish offsets, and the one attempt I've seen with VS4-10 + SSD offset axles here on RCC was unsuccessful due to driveline & link interference. Different chassis I know, but similar enough to make me concerned that similar issues would be hit

The ssd is the same offset as ar45 where vanquish is offset to the other side no? If I remember correctly you can't run vanquish ocp axles with the trail king chassis because of this.
