I am new to crawling, and I see a lot of posts regarding the various motors that people use and the number of turns the motor has (55T, 35T, 20T, 13 Tand 16T) There may be a laymen explanation thread somewhere by someone like Harley, but I have not found it.

So what is the significance of the number of turns in a motor, and why the WIDE range in what people prefer?

Low turns (12 turn in a 2wd slash for example) is a high speed motor.
higher turns means less speed and more torque. 55 turn is the usual high limit.

then you get into the quality/type of motor. A high quality hand-wound motor will give both more torque and more speed than a comparable sealed-can motor.

The reason for the different preferences is mainy driving style. Some people like a super-slow control controled driving style, others would rather nail the throttle and slam through things, and there are preferences for everything in between.

IMO 35T handwound is a good mix of torque and enough wheel speed on 3s to power your way through about anything. That's usually what I run on scale rigs.

17T handwound is pretty fun on a Wraith or similar lightweight KOH rock buggy with decent torque to climb.

On my heavy 2.2 KOH rock buggy I'm running a 10T puller on 4s...it HAULS!

While you have been given some nice answers, there is another couple of things to consider:

1-What is your transmission ratio?
2-What is your tire OD?
3-Is this a comp rig, or a "for fun" rig?

What works for one person may suck for another.

In general, the lower the "T", the more motor speed but the less motor torque. The higher the "T" the more torque but lower motor speed.

Right now I have the stock ratios that come in the RTR Wraith, but plan to switch to a lower gear ratio when I understand better what I might need because I prefer "for fun" crawling as opposed to rock racing. I also plan to get a Holmes motor and ESC combo  Either a Crawlmaster PRO 540, a 2012 Team Torquemaster Pro, or the cream of the crop 2012 Team Crawlmaster PRO 540  and in the recommended 13t for crawlers.

Where did you get that 10T puller? Holmes?
