my bro in law bought a 80 cj last weekend from west va off ebay for 5900. got a hard top, doors, great looking jeep. until you start looking under it. welded plates on the rear half of the frame, tub rust, alot of typical jeep frame and body rot but the frame rot looks like ot was atleast tried to fix. the tub has carpet and where ever you look under the carpet it looks suspicous, or even places you can finger right through. it has new fenders, grill and tub sides which lead me to believe it suffered from major rust. plus on the under side you cant really see just how bad it is because of the 55 gal drum of undercoating applied. anyway, my bro in law was talking about all this money he wants to put in it, he didnt look at it very well or really know what too look for, again its a great looking jeep, lots of SS. he just wants somthing to tool around town in and loves cj's. i was telling him he ought to just sell it or enjoy it for the summer and then sell it and try to get his money back out of it, but then i was wondering, is the price typical for the shape/age of the jeep? i was in, on and around it all weekend and i say no way.

Got any more info on it, lift, tranny, engine, axles, etc? The frame rust could be a serious problem. That is pretty steep for a rust bucket, but CJ's are not so easy to find anymore.

rough country lift, funky rear shackles, 33x12.50's T176(?) 4 speed, 258 and stock axles, amc and dana 30 or 35 they came with? ive seen frame repair kits for cj's, some .250 steel plate plates that you weld on to reinforce/fix the entire rear of the frame but his looks like little pieces welded on here and there but with all the undercoating its kinda hard to see how good they did and how much they just covered up. cj's are getting hard too find and a good one not cheap. i was teling him to look down south and out west, where it seems rust free ones are still to be found and spend 10-15 grand. or keep this one and rebuild it, new frame and tub.
collins bros out of texas has some awesome cj's in the $20's

ouch, thats allot of money to get it home and find that. without seeing pictures just going off description and not knowing if its a 5 or 7. Jeeps in the condition you describe are going on craigslist in my area for $2,000-$4,000. actually know where there is a lifted cj7 with a fiberglass tub for $1800 (if My xj sells Ill be getting it)

Man that sucks. Ebay is the worst place to buy a vehicle. and a jeep that 20+ yrs old? For almost 6 grand? WOW! Thatsa tall price to pay for a band aid Jeep. I live in Montana and Cjs are going for Half that. With a decent lift (not rough country) 33s and hard and soft tops. I got my YJ for 500. I lifted it added tires (35s) and a lift ,new top and have been wheeling it for 3 years. A picture is worht a 1000 dirty words!!!

well the body itself looks pretty clean in the pics, you can get a YJ frame (bascially the same as the cj7) pretty cheap and they make replacement floor pans that he could weld in. As long as the mechanicals arent in all that bad shape I dont think he got hit too bad, prolly would have sold for about $4000 around here but, Im sure they would have asked $6000.

it does run strong although the clutch dosnt quite disengage all the way so shifting isnt always the easiest. anything with fluid leaks and the exhaust is welded in. he put it on craigs list and has already gotten a few hits

Gotta love the CJ's... I found some old pic's of my First Jeep. 81 CJ-5 Ren...Bought it Jan.. No Top, one thing I had to drive, Both front seats were broke. I had to run a strap behind the seats to both rollbars just to hold them up... 33's, Lift unknown, New Heavly Built 383, Blown out glass packs. Thing was so freakin load... Sounded like a drag car taking off.. Broke 13 rear driveshafts.... Had 2:73 gears, way to high for 33's and that motor. That Jeep scared me to many times. I saw my life flash by a few times.... I'll post some pic's later.... Paid $2k for it.. Then traded it up for my 90 Wrangler.. Much better... Oh I picked up more girls in that rust color CJ then any car I have ever owned...
