has anyone done 1/4 eliptical leaves for the front suspension? just wondering, haven't seen anyone do it. if so why.............is there any problems with the set up. thanks

I've seen pictures of a few 1:1 rigs with 1/4 elliptical front suspensions. Just not very common. Probably due to it being easyer to fit a coil in the front since its already hard enough trying to find space for the links.
If you did it on an RC, you would either have to have the links come from the front of the vehicle and hurt your approach angle or you'll have to run a panhard bar or something to keep the front axle from being push back and bending the leaves.

a limiting strap would work better for that than a panhard bar!"thumbsup"

its no diferent then running links and air shocks on a 1:1 rig!

thanks for the help...................did it this morning. gonna try it out today with dtp and young version. so far it works pretty good in the back yard. i'll keep you guys posted......thanks

Pictures? Write up? :D

ok, took it out to play yesterday with dtp, young version, and aipohaku.........not bad for it's first run, had a few problems with the steering and driveshaft popping out under load..........not to mention stripping my spur gear. other than that was pretty fun. everyone had so much fun, forgot to take some action shots.........i think dtp had his camera and shot a few. well, i fixed it this morning and got rid of the twist that occurs when i steer and the driveshaft doesn't pop out anymore. here's some pics, hope you like it...............and it's a little more low in the front now;-) ..............................

gotta say that this switch to leaves is the **** "thumbsup" !!!!!!!! i love it, i'll post action pics next time we trail again (i hope soon). gotta say thanks to young version and dtp for all the help and the rest of you guys that responded to my thread, thanks.

Ahh you confused me. You were talking about a 3/4 elliptical or a buggy leaf. A 1/4 elliptical is when one end of the spring is bolted to the frame and the other end attached to a shackle or pivot point on the axle.
With the setup your running, you could do a shackle reversal and have the buggy leaf in the back too if it ever becomes a problem when climbing ledges.
Looks good "thumbsup"

whats the point of the leave springs when you four linked it anyways?? i could see one traction bar or somthing but why do you have all that???

the reason being that when i tried to steer it to the right or left it would twist the axle. the leaves are really soft so it would try to unload, there for the driveshaft would pull out sometimes. i tried all different kinds of ways, this seems to work the best. a matter of trial and error. and its not four linked in the front, one traction bar on the top and two on the bottom. there probably are other ways to do it but this seems to work fine for me. thanks for looking "thumbsup"

Nice work man, I am digging it, Its a very original design...I cant say I have scene anyone else do this "thumbsup"

thanks for the compliments :) . i really like the way it's coming out. just gotta finish the rack and the camping gear that my wife is gonna make for me. i love the way it drives now. doesn't flex as much as a 4 link, but now its more realistic. thanks again for looking...

The reason it's unloading is because you have two pivot points on the front of each leaf pair. The two TLT mounts bolted together let it roll out, or under in your case and build up wrap, and cause your drive shaft to fall out. If you run a bolt through the two eyelets together it will make one pivot point, and since your upper and lower spring should compress the same they will travel laterally the same distance so there will be no need for a shackle. You will have to move the upper springs in or out width wise in relation to the lower springs so the eyelets will be parallel and not bind, but that's an easy one. The reason it didn't spit the driveshaft with the four link is because you elimnated all the slop by triangulating the links, if you just alter your springs and mounts just abit, you can lose the four link again. You may still need a panhard bar, but it shouldn't be hard to rig one up...

i don't have a 4 link in the front. i have one track bar on the top of the axle and two on the lower to prevent axle twist. seems to work pretty good for me. i guess it depends on the vehicle. maybe later on i'll try some other way. main thing is that it's running so i can drive it on the trails "thumbsup" . thanks for all the help and comments, keeps the drive going.

Thanks alot! I like them in purple. I have been using blue forever. time to switch up. Thanks again
