i just got a 55t axial motor and was wonder what u guys think i should start out with with geaing? Thanks.

I would just try what you have now. If it doesn't give you enough wheel speed, bump up your pinion gear a tooth or few. If you still don't like it, then move into a different turn motor then. But at least try out the one you have now to see what you like and dislike about it. A higher turn motor is more torquey so if you are getting a lot of torque twist, you may want to mirror your trans. Just a thought.

If you want to know what pinion you should use, well, that is kinda depending on what you are looking for. I don't know for a fact, but I believe most start out with a 21-23t pinion. A higher tooth count on the pinion will help compensate for some wheel speed. Just make sure you watch your temps when going with too large a pinion.

Disclaimer:
I could be wrong. If I am, please someone correct me.

21-23t pinion? Holy shit... 87/14 is the most common. 21-23 is going to make a 55t motor smoking hot. Pinion and spur ratio should be at least 4.5-5:1 range. There are to many factors to give you an exact ratio. Play with a few pinions and watch the motor temp. I'm going to say in the 13-15 range.

What battery/voltage will you be running? What is the truck exactly? What size tires? All these things will determine what you should use.

I started gearing my 55 Turn Integy lathe motor at 19/87, but it stalled to easily in the rocks.

It is much happier at 16/87.

Anything in between those two will likely be a good match on 2s lipo and about a 6 pound rig.

I run the 18/87 gear because its what i had at the time. But i also run a 550 55t titian. wheel speed to me is like a 1:1 in 2nd in low loc , so i like it . i dont know about the size (550) making a noticble differnce in performance. Its a grunt on 2s and snaps drive shafts like tooth pick on 3s . Thats with 1.9 boggers or baja claws and there huge. so to each is his on.

Sorry its a scx10 honcho running 2s i had a 20t dynimite running 12/87 and a traxxas xl5 esc. ive only driven it a coulple times but am trying to get it all set up for crawling around all the rocks by the ocean when in go camping im gonna be running 1.9 rims and tires i do have 2.2 also.
