80's to 90's Toyota 4x4 vs 80's to 90's Jeep Cherokee 4x4 - which one to buy?????????

Well heres my dilemma. I need to buy an inexpensive 4x4 for work.

I owned a 1985 Toyota 4x4 for years.

I drove a 1999 Jeep Cherokee 4x4 for years.


This is a work vehicle, and must be 4wd.


Now, years later, here I am. I would strongly prefer something with live axle suspension, and I know that greatly limits my choices. Since I have used these a lot off-road, they seem like my best options.

The Toyota is more reliable, but is built like a beer can.

The Jeep is less reliable, and at least built like a can of beans.


So what say you guys out there?

Yota hands down. "thumbsup" Cherokees are like beer cans, you can only bend it so many times before it breaks it half.

Miss both my Yotas big time. My 99 extra cab 4x4 with the 4cyl and 5 speed was one of my favorites...really miss it with gas prices these days.

Had an 89 commanche with the inline 4.0l six, beast of a mini-truck, but was tempramental like a woman.

I'd try to find a 97 to 01 Cherokee with an AW4 trans and police package. 3" lift, 4.10 gears, 31" bfg at's, E-Locker in the rear. "thumbsup"

cherocar inline six is a beast...dana 35 rear not so much

Yota 22re basically indestructible but lacks power.

Stay away from any toyota with a 3.0!

I am a Toyota fan even though all my buddies and my step father all wheel cherocars.

I was a Toyota tech for a number of years so if you have any questions just ask. Either a 4cyl pick up or a heep will make for a fine DD/work truck IMO.

Another question is cost of gas and also if you plan on having passengers too, I know it's a work truck but some work trucks been use to for that

Non ABS, H.O. 4.0l XJ, those should have the Chrysler 8.25 instead of the D35 in it and should be easier to find parts for in a junk yard if needed.

Maybe 1 passenger at most, and only once and a while - maybe.

Gas not as much of an issue. I get paid when Im on the road, and I get paid mileage.

My Yota got maybe 18mpg, but the Jeep I used (4.0 6 inline) got about 20mpg.


Just to throw this out there, anybody have thoughts on Landcruisers? I always heard they suck gas, and the engines are not real reliable like other Yotas.

I've had both. Got a 95 2dr XJ 4x4 w/ 4.0 & AW4 and had a 90 Toyota Reg Cab 4x4 w/ 22re & 5spd. The Yota was nice for actually having a bed to throw trash and large parts in but I prefer my XJ hands down. The 4.0/AW4 combo is very stout and reliable, is much roomier inside (I'm 6'4") and you can pick up a fairly nice 4x4 XJ for alot less than a decent Yota. Had them both at the same time and the XJ is still here, sold the Yota.
