Another which one to get thread - RTR vs. RTC

Looking to get one of the above for my 3 year old. He already has a racer in the form of an HPI E-Savage. Looking for a better crawler. Was about to buy the Axial RTR but then saw the RTC for a bit more.

I understand that the RTC has better shocks and wheels and comes with a different motor. But the RTR comes ready to crawl or race out of the box so I coulad easily switch back and forth for the fickle minded 3 year old! I know it won't comapre to the savage but not sure that matters much.

One consideration I need to keep in mind is that my 3 year old prefers the look of the RTR because it is more "monster truck" looking. I know that is probably a negative in rock crawling world as it will have a tendency to flip more due to the height.

I do want to swap bodies on the Axial as well with possibly the Proline JK Jeep body (I believe I will need some kind of extenstions to do this) so I need to make sure that the one I buy can accept that body..

I am completely new to the RC world so I am not looking to build from scratch. I am enjoying the minor mods I have done with my Savage and will probably look to make some on the Axial but confused as to which one is the best place to start.

can the RTR be converted to be more like the RTC easily? and vice versa?

well if your going with a jeep body and trying to look more scale you could always go with scx10

ther scx10 offer probably far more after market parts then the ax10 as there is so many things you can do with them, you do loose a little performance as far as going over stuff if you went with the scx10 but if your not rlly looking to build a comp rig and just trying to find somthing to bash around with and want a scale look the scx is a great choice, go check out the section for it and check out some pictures of other peoples this one is prob one of my favorites as im more of a cherokee kind of guy :ror:

I'm more confused than ever now! Think I need to see some videos of the scx10 in action and do some more research. Glad I checked here before pulling the trigger on the RTR or RTC.

Again, not sure I am looking for a scale of my Jeep...looking more for a good combo of capability and the potential to swap out bodies for some other types of vehicles...

Guess I should show the scx10 to my son to see if he says "I want that"....wait....he says that about every truck I show him!!

Oh, and XJ's (Cherokees) are very popular in my off-road club. We have a good mix of Wranglers (all years), Cherokees and other non-Jeep vehicles. My Jeep is actually one of the smallest even with my lift and 35" tires...wife won't let me go any bigger as she already has difficulty getting into it!

haha yea i just have a 98 xj with a 3" lift and 30s id like to go bigger 5" with long arms is my dream lift lol. but back on topic, theres a ton of bodys and scale parts you can get for the scx its nice for just bashing around and making trails, but if you really want a 2.2 comp type of rig but still have the abilitly for your son to just bash around with some speed the the the ax10 RTR would be your best bet. but just do some more research and read around check out some videos and decide what you would think would be the best.

Both come with the same electronics (except the motor). The 27t turn in the rtr is faster but can be geared down easily. I think the 55t motor is too slow and doesn't take well to gearing up but the rtc is a better crawler mostly because of the better shocks and tires. Both are really close to the same and use the same chassis/axles/transmission/esc/servo/radio with very minor differences. Either can be changed/upgraded with axial option parts and unlimited aftermarket support.
The scx is different in the chassis and smaller tire/wheel size. It will be more realistic looking because of the smaller tires and limited articulation but will not perform as well. It also uses the same electronics/axles/transmission so can be changed/upgraded easily.
Different bodys can be fitted to either easily too. The difference is how much ya need to cut for the larger tires and articulation of the ax10 over the scx.
What ya really need to ask yourself is do ya want performance or scale looks.
Me, I'm all about performance.

Thanks! Will do. Since I already have a basher in the Savage, I am thinking that a more dedicated crawler would make sense so I am probably back to the RTR vs. RTC. Just not sure how a Jeep body would look on either so I need to go find some pics. Not a huge deal if it won't look good or won't fit since the main purpose is for the crawling, not the realistic look! He's 3 years old...he's gonna smash it up pretty good so I expect to go through a lot of different bodies. LOL!!

If the truck is going to be for your three year old, and he likes monster trucks, why not go with a Wheely King.
OR
If the truck is "supposed" be for your 3 year old then the scx10 is a ton of fun with many different things you can change it to do.

I'm so new to the RC world that I am still shocked as to how popular it is and how much time people spend on it! So in short, no I was not aware of the Boston Crawlers but have since checked out your website. Based on the progression of my hob...I mean my son's hobby.....don't be surprised if you see me pop my head in your forum soon!

I think I am looking for performance over look. And based on what you said, I can fit most bodies on either so that shouldn't be an issue. Yes, the larger tires may look funny with a Jeep body but I'm used to seeing that kind of thing on real Jeeps in my 4wd club!! LOL!!

you should deff get a a ax10 now that i kno ur just right in boston and come to the next comp tthers prizes and of good times and all the guys are really great and are willin to help out with stuff if you have any questions

Ended up picking up the Ax10 RTR. decided to start slow with a crawler that can also be enjoyed a bit as a basher. I came very close to the RTC but I got a great deal on the RTR so I went that route. Plus, I am really enjoying upgrading parts on my savage so I think I will enjoy upgrading my Scorpion as well to make it a better crawler. Buying the RTR will give me plenty of things to upgrade as I learn how to use it.....I mean my son will have fun...oh never mind...doesn't matter!!;-)

My brother in law just bought a custom scale body of a 4 door JK Jeep but all he has is a Traxxas E-Maxx. I believe he is looking at the scx10 as a possible scale crawler so hopefully i will get to see that in action soon. But I am happy I went with the AX10!!

Now just have to wait for UPS.......

You can always convert your RTR Axial to a scale truck down the road. Enjoy it for what it is and when you get bored with it there are many options to turn it into a scale truck if that is what you decied to do. The X-trail chassis http://www.tcscrawlers.com/On-Sale-...ssis-for-the-Axial-AX10-Scorpion-p-16556.html is a cheap option and a great chassis for turning the AX-10 into a SCX-10 type truck.

Here is my old AX-10,axles,tranny,and tires converted into a scale 4x4, its an AX10 with a X-trail chassis. The big tires 2.2's perfrom better than the smaller 1.9's and IMO look better as well. Kinda that bad ass road warrior look
