Anybody know V6 Toyota engines?
<HR style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #ffffff; COLOR: #ffffff" SIZE=1><!-- / icon and title --><!-- message -->I have a 1992 4-runner with the v6. Lots of miles, low power, syncorizer wear in 1st gear. 160k+ miles

I have an oportunity to get a V6 engine/transmission/transfer case from a 1999 very cheap - possibly free. But, I would have to do a double switch. My 1992 4 runner powertrain in the 1999 truck, then the 1999 truck powertrain in my 4runner.

I can take my time getting the new engine running in my 4-runner, but I have to get my old engine into the 1999 truck and running so that the owner can turn it back into Toyota. The truck is eligible for a factory buy-back at 150% of blue book due to frame rust. We are thinking that once the engine is running, that is pretty well it. I am not worried about getting the gages working.

I am going tomorrow to set the two trucks side by side to check it out, but I thought I would see if any of the gearheads here had any advice, l or could recomend any websites.

Let er rip.

Big difference, you will be swapping harnesses and a lot of other stuff as well. 92 is obd, 99 is obd2, not to mention I am not entirely sure they will even fit in the same spots. custom motor mounts, possibly drivelines and lots of work to get it to even run in the 99.

Look up Advanced Adapters should have most everything to put the 3.4l into the 92' but putting the 3.0l in the 99' is a waste of time:flipoff:

The stealership may check that all of the VINs match, so be careful. Also, maybe check out tacomaworld.com. It is a tacoma site, but all of the info should be relevant.

A truck can't get a new engine throughout it's life for any reason?

Dealerships are lazy. They will only check the dashboard VIN and nothing else.

The blocks themselves may be the same (unsure. Not a Toyota guy), but plan on swapping EVERYTHING over short of the block itself. This means any and all gaskets, sensors, mounts, brackets, manifolds, etc.

By experience, I would guess with a high amount of certainty that the castings are not interchangeable only due to later required emissions equipment and differences between sensor mounting bosses or cylinder head designs.

source a vortec 4.3 and get it overwith!

That was my thought until this oportunity came up. Swap to the vortec at some point, but the 92 is still drivable at this point.

I will probably not do it, but it is tempting.

Worst part is getting the 3.0 running in the 1999 quickly.

bingo"thumbsup" I loved my 99 with the 3.4L but if I had a choice I would have SBC'd it.

the 3.0's eat up head gaskets, even with the Felpro 'upgraded' design. I personally think it's because of the way the passenger side exhaust crosses over behind the engine and dumps into the drivers side exhaust manifold, it builds a LOT of heat in that area and that's usually where the head gaskets fail.

I've heard some issues with the V-6 as well, I always thought the water jacketing caused issues in those heads. Something about shallow cylinder walls. Could be just a rumor though.

But I've got a 2.7 litre 3RZ-FE in my 'Runner! 210K+ miles so far! YAY

I would think the dealer would definately look at the truck, and might not even need to check vins to tell the motor issue. Aside from that, if there are smog law issues, I know at least in California, but it may be federal, you cannot put an older engine into a newer car.

I don't have to worry about smog, and I looked at the Toyota literature and as long as the truck has not been dismantled, or scrapped, they will buy it back at 150% of blue book.

I figure it is too much work for the double switch.

I will probably get the ac compressor off of the 1999 and that's about it.

Now, back to dreaming about a 4.3 Vortec....

You are right i was a Tech at my local Toyota for 5 years and there was a problem with the HEAD GASKETS on the 2.7. It was a major recall with the head gaskets were failing and causing the heads and block to get damaged. The recall was called ZO-6 try and google it for more info. As for that motor it's great but you'll get way more power out of the 3.4. I had a 99 Tacoma with 175K and it was still running strong.

I'd ask the dealership if they care if it ran? Going to scrap it anyway. Getting a 3.0 running in a 99 will put you money behind. The blocks use the same motor mounts and same bellhousing bolt pattern. exhaust and rewiring is going to be a pain. Just find a 3.4 with harness to swap in your 92. Way better then the 4.3 gm swap. Plus it's all Toyota ,"thumbsup" off the shelf parts, avaliable at you local parts store. Have 3 friends who have done the 3.4 swap and love it.

While the 3.4 swap looks great, I suppose the GM swap does have the advantage of better parts availablity and pricing. I am 45min+ away from my Toyota dealer.

Without the SC on the 3.4, the 4.3 makes more power too.

I suppose I have plenty of time to make up my mind on it.

All I can say is, line them up. I've yet to see a stock 4.3 outrun a stock 3.4. Numbers on paper are just that, numbers on paper.

As far as availability? You have a napa or auto parts store close , right? Pricing can go either side of the fence, 4.3 you'll need a custom bellhousing for the factory 5 speed and custom clutch, both of which Advance Adapters sells.

Go over to pirate4x4.com/forum and mill around the toyota section looking at swaps.

Myself, I found a deal on a 2rz 4cylinder out of a Tacoma to replace the 3.0. Better mileage, lighter, more reliable, and a little better performance even thought it has less rated horsepower. Looking back, I have no regrets, but a 3.4 mechanically is a bolt in deal.
