Anyone ordered from SMF RC???

My newest excuse was that yes my cage was done but he couldn't make it to the post office today and it is closed until Monday. He had to take his wife to the hospital was the cause this time. I feel like a terrible person for even doubting someone so much that I think he is lying about something like that. Im going to file a claim on paypal, and forget about it. He always has a small excuse to keep stringing you along

Maybe filing a claim will light a fire under him!

Well I filed it thru paypal and apparently pissed him off. I emailed him today seeing when the cage would ship and his response was " I am working with paypal and your cage will be out in the allowed time"
So wtf is the allowed time?!?! 2 months after it is suppose to be shipped isn't an allowable time!? I went ahead and escalated it to a claim. This guy is a crook everyone, im not sure what happened at SMF but I would never send anyone to this guy for anything.

Well after everything was said and done, paypal stepped in and refunded my money. Couldn't even get the jerk to email me back. So I have no cage and I guess I will be looking for another builder but I got my refund. Its a shame the SMF has come down to being ran by a crook.

Wow,

For my Toyoter build, I bought a Truggy rear frame with attached sliders from SMF and did not have any problems, and it was finished and mailed with the time promised

I then bought a second one, I found on Ebay from SMF for a Honcho cab, a few months later, I ordered it and got it with the time promised with no problems

Usually its me that gets screwed over repetitively, and usually have to file a case and do get a refund, but then I been screwed out of a refund also a few times

I had good luck with SMF, but it was a few years ago and have not needed any more frames

I do see some frames on Ebay, ever once in awhile and there sold pretty quick

The one for the Yoter was #H039 and the one for my Honcho looks similiar to #H062 or #HO63 or #H064, rear frames

I don't think they made a bunch of the Honcho ones like mine cause its not on the site, I knows its a SMF, it has a different look

And that's exactly why I wanted to get an SMF cage. I heard nothing but good things and I thought the quality of them was pretty darn good. As someone said in this thread something changed at SMF. Maybe the father quit making cages and its just the son that's giving people the run around. Either way Im bummed about it. I was looking forward to getting my truggy build going and now I'm cageless lol. I will either just build my own or suck it up and pay some of the crazy prices for someone else to build one.

The last time I talked to the owner, or whoever I talked too, was going to have twins and would be maybe taking time off

That's what I was told a few years ago, then months after I talked them and ordered the Toyota frame, there was a posting on here, how it too forever to get orders and they did not respond too emails

The second frame for the Honcho was on Ebay and maybe it was pre-made, cause I got pretty quickly in a short time

I heard that the same thing before I ordered, but just figured he was busy, I called him on the phone and just happened to get him answering the phone one morning

I think it took me a few try's, but did talk to some one that acted as the owner or in charge and could answer my questions at the time

And I got him to laugh a little and thanked me for my business, seemed like a cool person, maybe it is somebody else

I think the dad no longer does it, and it's the son that's "trying" to build them.
It almost seems like the dad was the brains and motivator behind SMF. After the dad dropped out, it all went down hill!
At first, when I was going through the fiasco with my cage, I honestly didn't think the guy was trying to scam anyone. I just thought he had way too much on his plate, wasn't prioritizing well, couldn't keep up, and was making lame excuses for it. After reading some of the other posts after mine, I'm beginning to think the guy might be a crook!
What makes absolutely no sense to me, why doesn't he just be straight and honest with people when they order! If it's going to be a month or two, be up front about it! Maybe only take a 2 or 3 orders at a time!
Most of the time, if you're up front and honest with people, they'll understand and wait it out. Either they're good with the turn around time, or they don't order!

Well at least he's talking with you. I've lost contact with him and have a claim opened through PayPal. I would consider this place closed and out of business. I'm just gonna take my refund and use the money towards a tig welder and learn my self.

I'll have him build what I want and then pay for it when his ready to ship it.

Good luck. I suggested that and never got a reply. Actually, I told him I'd pay after I received it. I lost count of how many times he told me mine was "ready" or "almost done" only to discover later that that he hadn't even started. Sounds like a new cash flow strategy to me...

Wow, I would not wait or want a hurried up cage from this guy...just refund my money lol. He might send you crap like the ill-fitting cage the one guy got on first or second page of this thread.

It's a shame that more builders aren't using tubing that it strong and lighter weight, however this guy obviously can't be trusted.

Nope, and the weld to the plates and the main hoop failed. When I inspected it further, there wasn't full penetration, so it was just a really weak weld.

He seems like a nice guy, but is either in over his head, or too backed up to keep orders flowing as he should.

I wouldn't order from him again... instead go buy the tools needed and make your own cage.

Guess I'm part of this group. Pretty much same story as everyone else wish I would've looked these up before I ordered. Been waiting since around Aug8th for a 2 week build. Just excuse after excuse. Last I heard there was a family emergency in Houston but my cage was finished and would be shipped priority mail monday (Columbus day). Just asked for a refund or undeniable proof cage is built and ready to ship. And now I wait.

Sorry to hear - it's a painfully familiar story. Hate to say it, but your best bet is a paypal claim. Keep in mind, he's listed and sold at least 11 cages on eBay since you ordered yours. Just sayin'

I can imagine the frustration and anger among the buyers and its fair on their side.

Business scaling is vital but very complicated like juggling a two edged sword. People that are creative are good in their field of choice because, they have invested a lot of energy into it spanning years. This makes them oblivion to other fields or disadvantaged due to lack of knowledge. Hence they become incapable to take the business out of the dad and son phase to a strong brand with a considerable turnover.

Very few can juggle every aspect of a business alone- concept > product > market > customer trust > reinvesting > scaling > keeping growth momentum steady. In the initial stage of a business, the owner has to be EVERYTHING when resources are scarse and risk factor at every step is high.
