Are both axles identical in rotation, etc?

I had a thought about using a T-maxx differential as a transmission.

The only problem I think is that the TLT axles would be going in opposite directions since I'm sure one is not reverse rotation like some real trucks.

Am I assuming right that there is no front or back axle...just identical units?

I need to get this kit in front of me so I can see what I'm dealing with!!!

as long as servo mounts are up both will run in the same direction unless your trans has a funky output with F and R outputs running opposite. how are you gonna hook the motor up to this "trans"?

If you going to use a tmaxx axle as a tranny, put a spool in it then it will be locked.

Skylineracer - Correct, I would have to lock the spool to get both shafts turning.

thorsteenster - So if both outputs on the Maxx tranny are turning in the same direction, the TLT axles will both turn in the same direction? Meaning the truck will move forward and not pull itself apart!

I would have to figure a way to mount a gear on the pinion or turn the shaft down to accept a gear, etc.

The Maxx differential seems pretty small so it seems you could mount it low without much loss of height underneath the chassis. The motor could mount low also since i picture the Maxx tranny coming up through the chassis.

as long as neither axle is upside down, yes. if there are any doubts, hold it off the ground and give it some throttle. i had that happen to me with high lift axles in a build, went to try its first run around in the hotel room and i darn near yanked the truck in half! good thing i didnt nail it with the crawler system.

I'll have to wait untill the TLT actually arrives!

Here is what I'm thinking.

Use the ring and pinion out of another differential to connect the motor to the Maxx "Tranny".

The pinion gear would mount on the motor and the ring gear would be mounted to the Maxx "tranny". Or possibly another beveled gear set from another vehicle.

It may take a little fabbing, but seems to me it should work.

Does anyone know what the size comparison of the Maxx differential and the Stampede tranny is? I'm guessing the diff is much smaller?

They can be bought, but not through regular RC sources. Here is a kind of poor pic of the motor mount I made. It probably would be kind of a weird motor position too. Either vertical or up kind of high. Your idea of using bevel gears would probably work out better.

Would that be so bad really? Height wise it would have to be shorter if you did side by side... but probably too wide? and ya, a bit top heavy w/ motor on top? could get real long shaft for outputs and put motor low?

If you set your tranny up similar to the pics above, chain drive would be a simple option, just need cogs...

The thing is you get a Maxx diff used on ebob for, oh say $15.00 shipped. Then you mess around to make a mount for it. Now you spend another $15-$30+ getting gears, sprocket, chain, etc. for it. It starts to get close to the price of a used stealth, pede, losi, etc. Now if you already have all the parts laying around and all you need to do is make a mount, it's a little different situation. This project started for fun and stopped for me when I had to start buying more parts. I may complete it someday. For right now I would rather see somebody else do it and be content knowing I had a good idea.
