Attn: NEWBIES POST HERE<<<<<<

Joined in 2021, bought a TRX4 for my grandson and a TRX4-sport. i gave him the sport for Christmas that year, and just built mine. I still fly planes and heli's but getting older and so are my eyes. I have always had a nitro buggy & truggy, ARRMA Outcast 1/12 scale Losi NASCAR, Losi Dirt Bike, and a Bolink. I want to get a Cheater crawler or Super Class, just need to figure which way to go. I like the Rhino and also like the MOA's. been reading here to try and decide my next buy.

I never posted here as a newbie... Better late than Never.

I joined back in 2013, and have been into RC since well before that. When I was younger I always wanted to get into Crawlers. Just couldnt afford them at the time. In 2013, as a high school graduation gift to myself I bought an SCX10 JK Unlimited kit to build. It wasn't until I moved into the local state park that I finally got to run it. That rig now has hundreds and hundreds of miles on it. With one Year hiking over 500 miles in 6 months.

Nowadays, after a brief hiatus, I am back into the hobby harder than ever. I still have my OG SCX10, as well as a 10.2, 10.3, a bomber, and wraith. I am working on brining back my build threads, but struggling with the update to the forum. Specifically posting photos, and all that. Hopefully I figure out the problem, as there has been some fun builds I've done lately!

I'm new to forums, but I have been into rc since about 2020.

My first rc rig was a TRX4 79' Bronco, and I still have it. Poor thing's been through hell and back. I first got into the hobby from seeing some pretty dope looking YouTube videos, and so I got myself a TRX4. After that, it was a couple of years before I got anything else, because of how much stuff costs and I was constantly improving (and repairing) the Bronco. So far I had to completely tear it down twice. I'm surprised that there were no super major breakdowns.

Today, I like creating stuff in CAD for RC parts. Currently, I'm working on a beadlock rim, and making miscellaneous parts. If anyone's got any interesting ideas, I'm happy to hear them. Now, I'm going to try to get out more, and drive the Bronco a bit more. Probably going to see what I can do with more CAD, and just tinker. I'm probably going to see what I can share around here, including 3D models as well as different builds I have wanted to try for a long time, because I have seen some pretty cool stuff!

I have two trx4s and I did all I could to burn up the electronics with no luck lol. I did lose a motor in my D110 but that was after a good long thrashing of nasty terrain over about a year. Replaced it with a Holmes Hobbies trail-master. Eventually decided to replace the esc but the orig xl5 was still fine. Went with a Hobbywing 1080wp. Was nice just for the added functions but otherwise I didn't have to replace the oem. Servo was the only upgrade I ever needed to make on my Bronco and D110 and went with direct power Holmes Hobbies shv500 v2. Great servos. Scrapped the Traxxas plugs in favor of XT60s so that I wasn't stuck with Traxxas' overpriced batteries.

But yeah, besides one motor, everything else has been fine incl tx/ rx, micro servos, etc. Added some weight down low and scrapped the Traxxas plugs in favor of xt60s and added some steel driveshafts to my D110 but old plastic shafts were still good. Most of what I've added, changed, upgraded, etc hasn't been out of necessity. And although I run a lot of different tire/ wheel/ foam combinations, the stock Canyon Trail tires are a pretty decent trail tire.

Welcome to the forum.

Hey Everyone, my name is Dwayne.
I've been around the forums a long time, mostly creeping here. My handle back in the URC days was HVACGuru, now I am an HVAC Teacher LOL!

I used to be active over there in the Stampede 4x4 section. I've seen a few names around I recognize; Jato and others.

I'm still active in RC, just not as often. I have an Ascender, a Knightrunner, CC02 that I am working on and a TRX4M.
I did have a Sunset TRX4 when it came out, put the Pro lights in it and electrical tid bits, couldn't bring myself to drive it. Ended up selling it for a small loss. Also picked up a 5.0 drag car around the same time, same story.

Really just stick to wrenching, trailing/crawling and occasional bash session when I can find the time.

Hope to be active around here and when I can post pics I will.

I also have a ton of Ascender parts that I may be willing to part with if people are in need.

Cheers all!

Hey all, I'm Lee, and after browsing this place on and off for quite a long time, I've decided to join.

I've been into RC since before I was born, in that my dad picked up an Associated RC100 shortly after it was released. Some of my earliest memories are of him chasing me around the kitchen with his Tamiya Wild Willy. When I was 12, he took me to our LHS, where I got my first RC, an Associated RC10T2.

I've been in and out of the hobby my whole life. I had an Axial AX10 when it was the hot new thing, but dropped it for other hobbies within a couple years.

About two years ago, some friends got into crawling, and of course, I jumped back in. I quickly went from VS4-10, to Zoku, to designing my own chassis. I primarily gravitate toward designs that fall somewhere in the range of class 2 to sporty. Basically, I like rigs that just barely resemble a real truck.

I've not yet competed in a SORRCA or WRCCA event, but have started hosting an annual competition in my county. I call it the Marin County Spec Crawler Series. I design a chassis, and every competitor gets a pair of rails, and must use certain "spec" parts for their build (usually axles, skid, gearbox). There are some rules that dictate overall dimensions, and how rigs can be modified. After each competition stage, one rule is lifted, so the rigs get progressively more capable as we go. We usually run eight stages over the course of the series. It's an absolute blast, and if anyone here is a Bay Area local, the next series should be starting in about two months.

I also like bicycles, sports cars, records and audio equipment, woodworking, Magic the Gathering, skateboarding, and whisky.

I think that's all for now. Gonna head into the garage to finish up the prototype for this year's Spec Series truck. It's UTB18 based.

Hello, stumbled onto these forums looking for others in my local area, so completely new here.

As for RC, I've been on/off into it since around 2008, but eventually discovered FPV, and have been hooked into that stuff. I've been playing with a few digital links over the years and I'm starting to get good results. Good symmetry with crawlers, the best success I've had has been with a TRX-6 but I'm hoping to go a bit bigger here soon, and put together a few expedition rigs that I can take out into the local woods, parks, and trails- and just explore.

Nice to meet all ya.

Hi all. I have been looking around the forum for the past week and it looks like a place I will come to frequently. I am new to the Hobby - got my first truck in January - FCX10 Blazer. It's funny as I researched and researched and bought that truck as it has the most features for the money. I put brass on everything, added a roof rack, scale goodies, a winch, lights and more. I think it was a good rc to get as a first truck. I enjoy it, but since then I have bought a Redcat Ascent 18 Scout, a TRX4M Defender and even a small FCX24M Land Rover. I even got an HPI Jumpshot SC to try the short course thing. Having lots of fun. In fact I seem to enjoy futzing around with the cars just as much as driving them. I'm figuring that a kit might be a good option for the next one. I am about to start on a SCX10II clone, all metal frame kit I found on AliExpress and then maybe an Optic H10 kit - who knows!?! Grateful for this group of people with all the information!

I don't have any of those rigs but if I was in the market for something new it would definitely be a Vanquish kit that I could build the way I wanted. Not right for me to recommend something I have no experience with but I feel like you'd have a great time building and running an Optic ( just from what I've seen/ read from others).

Welcome to the forum btw.

I think being a part of the forum is going to help me figure out what my favorites are. I have also realized over the past 6 months that a kit is probably going to be a good option for me. Every time I have gotten a RTR I go straight into figuring out what to upgrade - which isn't cheap! Brass parts, metal chassis arms, wheels, tires, better foams, etc, etc. I got the SCX10 kit for a crazy low price that I couldn't pass up, and I have been enjoying looking at motors and escs, wheels and tires, servos, bodies and transmitter/receivers. Once I complete this kit I think the Vanquish Optic kit is going to be great. I have been thinking that it would make a really great scale "formula offroad" rig. If you haven't seen them they are crazy Icelandic offroad cars, with v-8s, paddle tires and the ability to get serious air !

It sure does escalate quickly, doesn't it? I'm also firmly in the camp of enjoying turning wrenches as much as driving the rigs. Kits and custom builds are definitely the way to go for folks of our mindset. Just be aware that you can still run into frustrations that are similar to those found with RTRs. It took me some time to sort out what was and wasn't worth my money regarding customization, tuning, and upgrading. That's one of the reasons this forum is so valuable. Find folks who's work you appreciate, and listen to their advice. You'll still end up with some parts that may not work for your budget/local terrain/driving style/preferred aesthetics, but you'll hit the mark more often than not. My $0.02, at least in regards to what I like to build/drive...

- Don't just throw a bunch of brass at your rig. Get some cheap kitchen scales, and learn how to calculate weight bias and CGH. Removing weight up high and from the rear is often cheaper than adding weight down low and to the front.

- Injora wheels are fine. If you're feeling fancy, Boom Racing Probuilds are great.

- Dlux Fab shocks are the right choice for most builds. When you want to hit the hardest of lines, negative sprung Traxxas 2660s are the ticket.

- Vanquish Titanium Builders links are very convenient. Even better if you have a mini benchtop tubing bender.

- Traxxas Revo rod ends are okay, but Vanquish and Axial Capra HD rod ends have less slop. Element Enduro rod ends have the most clearance for tight spaces.

- Tires performance is going to depend on the terrain, and the temperature. If you don't have the patience or budget to test them all, JConcepts Tusks for small/medium tire rigs, and Ruptures for large tire rigs.

- Watch as many Boomslang Suspension videos on YouTube as you have the time for.

- Don't buy anything that says Spektrum.

- Do buy a transmitter with rechargeable batteries. Then buy another one so you can bring a friend with you.

- Get an electric screwdriver, and learn when not to use it.

- Treat your batteries right.

- Build a rig for every occasion. One should have a hardbody and small tires. One should have the lowest of CGs and weigh no more than 5lbs. One should have straight axles, 80mm shocks, and a 2-speed for getting rowdy on the trails around the crawl spot.
