ATV Crashes

"thumbsup"I just purchased one of these bad boys yesterday. Can't wait to pick it up will post up some pics of it when I can. Below is a video I found on boobtube of one to show what it looks like (exactly as pictured in the video). Can you say muuuuud .

All I need to do next (besides get a trailer, lol) is make it sound like this:

and lift it just a little, not quite this tall but it looks bad ass:

Oh yea, I got my son the youth Can-Am "thumbsup", throttle cut waaay back so just a little faster than an electric to start , and wrap him in bubble wrap. I'm going to hook up a wireless headset so I can talk/instruct while I follow him. I just had trial and error at his age, lol.

Got my first ATV when I was around 5 and loved it. Around 14 i got a Banshee and thought I was the shit. Until...I tried to jump a dirt mound and ended up with both arms broke and bone poking through the skin. 14 years later and I still feel it.

Damn...almost the exact same story here. Got an old Honda 125 atv....solid axle no suspension when I was about 5. By the time I was in 4th grade I was riding way past the capabilities of the atv so my parents bought me a Blaster, rode that until it ate a top end in about 6th grade. Then the oil injection system got junked (robs power to spin the pump) it got bored .030, head shaved to up the compression, pipe and silencer. It entertained me for about another year then I got a banshee and rode that until I was in 9th grade. All my friends were riding/racing dirt bikes....going faster jumping further etc. so I bought a new YZ250 and did the dirt bike thing through high school.

Now I'm close to 32, still ride ATV's and have a CR500 for when I feel like embarrassing some four strokers. I have been pretty lucky and never been injured worse than minor bumps and bruises but I've crashed so many times that they all run together after awhile.
I can flat out rip it up on ATVs but I still haven't gotten to the point on dirt bikes that I can just let it all hang out and go for broke. I think it comes from starting on ATVs so young, pushing it HARD on bikes has never really gotten to be comfortable.
I learned my lesson about booze and riding as well. Short version, lots of beer, out on first ride with new atv= almost a thousand bucks worth of damage.

I bought my 2 year old (he's 3 now) a pw50 dirt bike at the beginning of the summer.....I'll never hesitate to help my kids chase their dreams and I'll never worry about them getting hurt as long as it is doing something of their choice and not something I pushed them to do.

I know people that have died on atvs, bikes, and snowmobiles. It all comes down to wearing your safety gear and riding within your abilities.

I had a friend that got killed after a head-on collision with another guy riding an ATV. He wasn't wearing a helmet. Thanks to his own ignorance and arrogance he isn't around anymore. He was only 21 or so. he lived a good life though.

r.i.p. my friend

wear a damn helmet.

Growing up going to the dunes I have seen a lot of people killed on 3 wheelers and quads.

One instance in particular I will never forget is a time in Superstition with a buddy. We had gotten his truck stuck and a couple guys helped us out, when we got to where they were camped one of the guys asked me to help jump start his 250r. After towing him a bit it started and instead of going back to get his helmet he took off like a bat out of hell, well after a couple passes at full throttle he clipped a large rock which threw him over the bars for about 30 feet and came down right on top of his head. I can only assume that he didn't make it. We asked his buddy to call us with an update of his condition and never got one. His buddy had also told us that he had drank about a 12 pack before the crash.

I also had a buddy brake both ankles and both wrists hitting a witches eye about 100 yds from camp not more then an hour after we arrived at Buttercup sand dunes.

Knock on wood, I have been very lucky over the years and have never broken a bone on my bikes.

My kids grandpa (moms side)
Few years ago had the idea on his bike to drive circles around 2 guys on atvs (literally) one of the guys tried to keep up after the second round and clipped the rear tire. He went down. Full gear, helmet and all. Got ran over by both atvs around 45mph. He went into a coma, died shortly after. Left behind a wife with 7 kids. I never met him (though I wish different) but just hearing this and seeing the impact on 8 other lives.

My personal experience is on a aprilia rs250. Going hard through some corners on silverado trail towards the lake. Downshifted to 2nd for a loose right turn. Started goosing the throttle and hit some gravel on the road. Bike slid down road and I slid to the shoulder on the left side. Fell off the road 20-30ft before my left hip met a tree trunk. 10 years ago and I still feel the asphalt falling beneath my arse, and the steel pin now in my hip with 3 screws.

About 15/18 yrs ago we were camping at a place called Hacket Gulch on Memorial day the second night we were there we had driven out to the main road to meet some of our friends that were coming down after us when we got a bunch of yelling on the CB's for help. The people on the radio came around the corner about that time and they had a guy in the back of a Scout in BAD shape!! He rode a 3 wheeler of a cliff in the dark and landed in the river. He had head injuries and internal bleeding and was having a very hard time breathing.
The guy driving the scout broke his driveshaft and was trying to get him to the hospital in front wheel drive. My cousin and I helped them get him into our truck and we were able to get him to the road where an ambulance was waiting. We watched him get hauled away and never heard any more about it...
Fast forward 15 years my cousin was camping up at the dunes in Walden with a couple (his wife worked with this lady) and her husband... They were chatting around the campfire and this story came up and the guy looked like he was gonna shit his pants... turns out it was him and we saved his life getting him out of there... they said he would have died in another 30 minutes!! The guy hugged my cousin and thanked him (us) for saving him... Still get goosebumps when I think about it!!

I've seen lots of crashes between my time at the sheriff's office and the fire department. Worst is the one where the kid's body parts had to be picked out of the grill of a Ford F250 that he hit head-on at about 50mph on a dirt road. Lots of roll over death, hitting trees twice...once with the ATV, once with the body, cars/trucks vs. ATV...guess who wins that one...enough that I will never own or let my kids ride an ATV. Here where I live there are 10-15 ATV deaths every summer.

Just got back to station from another fatality ATV crash. Just one more reason to not own one...for me that is.

You probably shouldn't own a car either. Alot of people die in them also. You can't be stupid when you ride atvs.

my story. My friends aunt died on a rhino this fall
Her and her neice where out riding in the Rocky Mountains on a rhino. They were coming down the mountain from riding and somehow they went off a cliff and fell 400+ft. The aunt died on impact and the niece was lifelined out. She just got out of the hospital a few weeks ago.
The aunt was older probably 50+ and the niece was 21+

had a couple friends get pinned under theirs when they rolled them.... some in water... VERY close to being pinned with head under.

Also, a good friend was out on his Banshee alone and wrecked it. He was found dead on the spot by 3 of his best friends about 1hr later. We bought the Banshee and rebuilt it as it was his baby... but it's been treated with every ounce of respect possible. It was his Bday. He passed in his early 20s.

Big difference is, in today's society a car is almost a necessity...an ATV isn't. I can respond to a 100 car crashes and maybe have 1 or 2 of them be fatalities but at least half of the ATV crashes around here are fatal.
