Have a AX-10 with no spur sitting here, and since I am starting from scratch on this build, I am ordering a new ESC and motor also.

Rig:
2.2 tuber with Rock Claws

Batt:
11.1V 2100mah Lipo

From you guy's experience with AX-10 trannies and axles, what would be a good setup to start with (spur/pinion ratio and ESC/motor)? Never played with an AX-10, and haven't spent the time looking up gear ratios, so this is new to me. I know there isn't a "best" setup, but just looking for experiences.

And it is so hard to keep up these days.............are the top guys running BL these days, or gone backed to brushed? Probably going to go with a MM either way.

I am currently running the stock gearing, not sure what it is but i believe that it is a 14 tooth pinion, 87 spur. running a novak crawler with an integy 55t lathe motor. awsome power, respectable wheel speed, and long run times (45 mins on a 7.2v 1500mah axle pack)

the stock gearing is perfect for me but I might not have much reference since the only motor I have run in my ax10 is a 65t which is pretty slow itself. I have no need to go lower. You can't go much lower without modding your rear drive shaft input so the bigger spur will fit. I would try it stock first.
