Quarry Creeper
First ever Axialfest and first ever RC crawling competition and I came home with some hardware! So stoked and I’m definitely going back next year. Met some really cool and influential people from the crawling community. Met Matt from SBG, James Knight from Knight’s Customs (best vendor sponsored trail btw) and Josh from Vanquish. I was worried I’d feel out of place because I’m such a noob but everyone at the event was super nice and helpful.
I lined up for the 5k ultra early Friday am with just a cup of coffee in my stomach and no breakfast. I also only had the one battery in my rig and no tools. My other hobby is trail running and I never bring water or food on a training run or race unless I’m running over 10 miles. A 5k should only take me 22-24 minutes. I dont need water or breakfast right? I looked around and immediately noticed I was not prepared. Everyone was wearing a camelbak with multiple batteries and tools. I asked the guy next to me why everyone was carrying so much stuff and he said...bro, your not just running, your gonna be driving and navigating through obstacles. You could be out there for over an hour or longer if your rig breaks. DOH!!!! I ran back the my car, grabbed a spare battery and some basic tools and my camelbak then ran back to the start and pounded an energy gel.
The next thing I noticed was I was surrounded big bigger rigs. Mostly bombers. And here I was with my 10.2 and my tiny tires. Oh well. It’s all I got so let’s s see how we do. Apparently there were other 10.2s out there so I wasn’t the only one with tiny tires. Long story short, the race went off and I had a blast. I ended up 2nd in the 1.9 class!! My Garmin watch has my elapsed time of 1:27. So much fun and I can’t wait for the next one!
Oh, I won the rock racing in 1.9 brushed class the next day too! I think I just got lucky because. I just made sure my rig took the right lines and didn’t flip over. Everyone was talking about Michael Pham who apparently dominates all the races. He was in my race in the main and I beat him!! Again I think I just had beginners luck.
What a great weekend!!! Thanks for reading!
